UFC 137 Fight-Picking Contest: The Winners!

(Images via BJJHQ and ZPR on Facebook.)

Between the widely held beliefs that BJ Penn vs. Nick Diaz would end in a stoppage, Matt Mitrione would outstrike Cheick Kongo, and Mirko Cro Cop still had some old Cro Cop left in him, none of you were 100% correct with your UFC 137 predictions in last week’s fight-picking contest. The closest entry belonged to commenter J. Spaceman, who got all three winners right, predicted the scorecard of Diaz/Penn within one point, and also guessed a TKO win for Roy Nelson. For his efforts, he wins this Gameness Premium Cage Rashguard courtesy of our good buddies at BJJHQ.com! (Spaceman, e-mail contest@cagepotato.com with your name, address, and size, and we’ll get it sent out to you. Please wear it responsibility.)

And since he was one of the first ten entries to correctly pick Diaz/Kongo/Nelson, J. Spaceman also wins a copy of Break Media’s new ‘Zombie Parkour Runner’ iPhone game, perfect for sitting on the couch waiting for your girlfriend to finish putting her Halloween costume together. The other winners of Zombie Parkour Runner are: aaron530, Viva Hate, Ani703, TheJedi, FrontKick Dentist, SmellMyTriangle, PERPATRAITOR, jinx5128, and heavy. If your name has been called, please e-mail contest@cagepotato.com with your real name and screen name, with ‘ZPR’ in the subject line, and we’ll shoot you a download code. Thanks to everybody who played!

Semi-related: If you’re particularly proud of your Halloween costume this year, post a photo of yourself on our Facebook wall. We always like seeing what you crazy bastards are up to.

Heads Up: UFC of FOX Primetime: Velasquez vs Dos Santos Airs This Afternoon

(Video: Youtube/UFC)

Just a quick programming note to everyone sitting on the couch this afternoon- the UFC’s first major appearance on the FOX network goes down shortly (exact time depends on your broadcast area, so check local listings). The Sunday afternoon timeslot may counter some NFL action, but it’s an incredible opportunity to capture viewers in MMA’s key demographic.

As readers of this site you obviously possess discerning taste and an appreciation for excellence, so check out the show and let us know your first impression of the UFC powered by the FOX production team.

Step Aside, Condit: Diaz Blasts His Way Back Into Title Fight Against GSP

Check out “Dapper” Roy Nelson in the three piece! (Video: Youtube/UFC)

“He’s the most disrespectful human being I’ve ever met, and I’m going to put the worst beating you’ve ever seen on him in the UFC.”

With those uncharacteristically aggressive words, Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre verbally accepted the bout against Nick Diaz in a backstage conversation with Dana White.

And just like that, Carlos Condit’s “guaranteed” title shot went up in smoke faster than a fatty in the 209. All of the events surrounding GSP’s next challenge have been bizarre, but that’s what happens anytime you’re dealing with the “Pride of Stockton”. Just last weekend, MMA’s least credible source, Chael Sonnen, predicted that Condit would get bumped back in line should Diaz get past Penn, and he was right on the money.

[UPDATED] UFC 137 Fight-Picking Contest: Win a Gameness Rashguard and the ‘Zombie Parkour Runner’ iPhone Game!

(Images via BJJHQ and ZPR.)

Update: My apologies — Penn vs. Diaz is a three-rounder, not a five-rounder as I originally implied. Please re-submit your predictions if necessary.

Halloween weekend is coming up, and we have a bag full of treats to give out to all the neighborhood kids in the Potato Nation. You’re damn right it’s fight-picking time.

To win, you’ll have to correctly predict the results of the top three fights on the UFC 137 card: BJ Penn vs. Nick Diaz, Cheick Kongo vs. Matt Mitrione, and Mirko Cro Cop vs. Roy Nelson. Submit your predictions for the fights in the comments section below, including the winner’s name, the method of victory, and the time/round of stoppage, if any. The most accurate prediction wins this Gameness Premium Cage Rash Guard (retail value: $35), courtesy of our friends at BJJHQ.com.

And as an added bonus, the first ten entries that get all three fight-winners right will score a free download of Break Media’s new iPhone game, Zombie Parkour Runner (retail value: $0.99). The 11th correct entry will get an apple with a razor in it. Hey, it happens.

Your fight-picking entry must be in this format:

Kenny Florian to Re-Reinvent Himself at 155 lbs.

“Ken-Flo wants a cheeseburger, and Ken-Flo wants it NOW!!!”

Following his decision loss to Featherweight Champion José Aldo at UFC 136, there were plenty of questions asked about Kenny Florian’s next move. Having just fallen short in his third shot at UFC gold, the thirty-five year old fighter said that he needed time to evaluate his options, leading some to speculate that retirement was on the horizon.

But in an interview with the Boston Herald yesterday, Florian announced his decision to stay in the game and cited a tough weight cut for his bout with Aldo as the motivating factor in his return to the lightweight division.

“I felt [the weight cut] warming up, unfortunately. I don’t want there to be an excuse because there’s still things I should have executed that I didn’t, but I feel that it’s tough to go in there at a weight class that you’re not sure if you’re going to be 100 percent.”

Heads Up MMA Movie and TV Buffs: The ‘CagePotato Cage Cameo Contest’ is Coming Tomorrow

(Video courtesy of YouTube/Us)

Do you fancy yourself an aficionado of obscure cameos by MMA fighters and personalities in movies and TV shows? Do you like cool MMA gear?

If you answered “YES” to either of the questions above, you may have a slim chance of winning a sweet prize package from our friends at Hayabusa valued at approximately $300.

Here’s the deal: Tomorrow we will post a video with a variety of obscure and not so obscure clips from various films and television programs featuring fighters, commentators and innovators from the sport of MMA. To enter, drop us an email at contest@cagepotato.com with the name each movie and show and the MMA personality that appeared in it. Simple.

The clip above is an easy tune-up for you to get you ready for tomorrow, but be warned, some of the clips we’ve dug up are so random you might have to do a little detective work to identify who is in them. Seriously…we didn’t even know some of these movies existed and that some of these fighters even knew what a script was.

Remember to check back in tomorrow morning for the official video for the contest. The deadline will be Friday at 12:00 pm ET, so get your entry in early. One submission per reader and if no entrant is correct, we will choose the person with the “most correct” answers. If more than one entry is deemed a winner, all of the “winning” entries will be put into a random draw.

‘UFC Encyclopedia’ Fight-Picking Contest: The Winners!

UFC 136 poster Edgar Maynard Florian Aldo UFC Encyclopedia book cover Gerbasi

Last week’s fight-picking contest took in over 120 entries — or about six, when you filter out all the entries that predicted Edgar vs. Maynard and Sonnen vs. Stann would both go to decision, and that Jose Aldo would knock out Kenny Florian. Since none of that happened, it kind of made our jobs easier.

Of the commenters who picked all three winners correctly, first-place accolades go to commenter smackemyakem, who predicted that Edgar would finish Maynard by fourth-round TKO. Well done, buddy. Second place goes to Yuri4980 who also called a TKO win for Edgar, plus a decision victory for Aldo. Sabourcc and Cro Cop Glory Days round out the winners’ circle by being at least somewhat correct on the victory-method for one of their picks. Congrats guys, you’re all getting copies of UFC Encyclopedia by Thomas Gerbasi. E-mail contest@cagepotato.com with your name and mailing address to claim your prize. Thanks to everybody who played!
