A few notable points that have emerged since yesterday’s bombshell that Chael Sonnen tested positive for performance enhancing drugs following UFC 117…
– According to the L.A. Times’ Lance Pugmire, Sonnen tested positive for a "natural steroid" before his fight with Anderson Silva. Natural steroids, such as androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone, aren’t chemically altered like synthetic steroids, and can be sold over-the-counter as supplements at health food stores.
– Sonnen is facing a year-long suspension and a $2,500 fine, which he has 30 days to appeal. According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Sonnen’s positive test emerged from a urine sample he gave before the fight that was processed through the UCLA Olympic drug-testing lab.
– When asked to comment on the situation by Yahoo!’s Kevin Iole, UFC president Dana White would only say that he’s leaving Sonnen’s punishment in the hands of the CSAC: “When [a UFC fighter] fails a test, the government is going to fine them and suspend them and tell them they can’t make a living for a year. So should I come in after they’ve already lost the ability to make a living for a year and been fined all this money and, in the worst economic disaster in the history of the world, fine them another huge amount and take away their ability to make a living even longer? These are guys with homes and families and personal lives and bills and debts and obligations, just like me and you. After they lost all this money already, money that, A, they’ve probably already spent and B, which they owe taxes, do I fine them another huge amount? What else do you do to a human being?”
– If you feel like giving Chael the benefit of the doubt, keep in mind that there’s a long list of over-the-counter cold and flu products that have triggered false positives in drug tests. Remember how Sonnen said he had a stomach bug in the week leading up to the fight?
So far, there’s been no official statement from Sonnen on the PED situation. We’ll let you know as soon as he makes one…

commentsAnd to the dude who asked "Could Chael have said that as a preemptive cover..." Yes. He could have. He also could have been banging some Tijuana hooker who just got banged by a donkey which had been eating grass that Josh Barnett pissed on, thereby getting steroid riddled donkey jizz on the tip of his wank and causing him to piss hot. Ya know, as long as we're doing the "could have" thing.
And Brutusbox, I too would nail Sarah Palin in a heartbeat, dunno about intelligent, but I would love to fuck her
awesome
Diaz brother from dot dot dot, you should know retarded. Your just as fucked as your lisp having siblings. STFU.
Naaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy
Personally I have never read a label in my life outside checking for a toy.
He wont be punishing the guy,Sonnen, any further(which is his decision and I have no opinion on it)because we are "in the worst economic disaster in the history of the world"(Those are his words!!!)
A couple months ago,Dana was in Canada trying to legalize the sport in Ontario. So,in an interview on OTR,he said the total opposite!
Something like;"MMA is so popular,we are one of the only industry in
America that are not suffering from this economic disaster!Thats how
big MMA is!"
I think i made my point!I hope I did.
Oh yeah!I forgot;Sonnen is a douche!
Say as you will his level of guilt is based on your personal feeling about sonnen. Just like no black person alive believes bonds juiced or at least thinks if he was white it would be ignored.
Personnaly I think his handlers are to blame if he took something banned. Do not buy he juiced in the truest sense of the word. Think he man handled silva because he was not afraid of silva.
After that could care less. He is no barnett or overoid no matter how many pimpels people think they can count.
I'm more curious when Chael is going to chime in on the issue here at CP, because we all know that he is reading this (along with every other fighter, ring-girl, promoter, and most recently Lance Armstrong) as we speak.
So Mr. Sonnen, since you told us that you're not a fraud, WTF happened?
I'm with Rex on my judgement scale for these types of things. If they were injecting anabolic steroids, then fuck that person. If they were taking supplements that clearly includes some banned substances they should know that. If they are taking supplements that are laced at the factory with illicit PED's so that the supplement works better, but that is not listed on the ingredients, I don't think it is incumbent upon the athlete to individually lab test each and every product that enters their body. In fact, I think if they can prove the manufacturer includes these substances, they should have a major lawsuit against that manufacturer. If they took some over-the-counter cold meds, I'm a little sympathetic, but at this level they should know to check the ingredients.
But.
I've got a pretty good handle on human physiology and I've looked into a lot of information about steroids and testing.
1) If a fighter pops for a cold/flu over the counter (OTC) drug it is usually for a stimulant. Sudafed for instance was a common abused OTC drug in hockey for goalies because of the alertness it created.
2) Corticosteroids (injections or pills like Prednisone) are NOT performance enhancing. They are not anabolic and are not a part of positive test results.
3) Natural testosterone test results could mean his testosterone ratios were altered. Many athletes test positive for the ratio after the synthetic drug has cleared (royce gracie, sean sherk). It could also be from a prohormone supplement that metabolizes into an anabolic steroid. Still yet, it could be related to DHEA supplementation.
An interesting part of the FDA regulations for supplements vs. prescriptions is that generally a natural existing form of a nutrient/hormone/chemical compound is usually not used as a drug because there are not patents available for naturally existing compounds. For women, natural progesterone can be found in yams. However, the synthetic drugs are not as effective but are better "products" because they can have a patent.
The backne really does make it seem like his hormone levels were altered.
/sarcasm
FTR, i'm not ready to crucify him yet, but this looks bad. If he's a pro, it's his responsibility to pay attention to what's in his supplements.
When it's a case of tainted or mislabeled supplements, i'll cut the fighter some slack. If this were a result of taking flu meds a week before the fight, i'll cut the fighter some slack.
