Any time someone takes his own life it is difficult but you can’t run away from the truth… Evan had some serious disorders.. no matter how much he was loved.. and the further he pushed into the abyss the further he got.

Unfortunately if enough Chael’s had spoken directly to Evan and not just to the camera, maybe he would’ve realized he was more normal than not, and we would’ve still had him with us today.

I really didn’t know that much about Evan Tanner so I can’t make an evaluation of what he was like. However, I have to say that I really don’t think Chael was being a dick. If Evan Tanner hadn’t have died so tragically, if he was still alive, or if Randy Couture had given it, I think that a lot of people would see that interview and agree with it. And also, if you are saying Chael is being a dick, then you would have to say that Forrest is being a dick too. They were both saying, and what others have said, that Evan Tanner was, regardless of his fighting skills, kind of different dude, who had some problems.

Just to clarify, I am by no means a Tanner hater. Somewhere around 2003-04, Tanner was one of my absolute favorite fighters. His fights with Baroni were epic, and about the only reason I still have any respect for Baroni. Tanner was an awesome fighter to watch.

youtube “evan tanner – for a better world” and even try sitting through part 1, its a bunch of rambling and banter, and in the end he wanted to be heard, but what he wanted to be heard is….who knows….sounded like he was off his rocker

I’m not defending Chael, but here are a few things to think about…

-When Chael knew him at Team Quest, they had asked Evan to leave because of all of his personal problems. After that, Evan drifted around, and in his own words said that he pretty much burned every bridge with every friend he ever had, because he would use their kindness to sleep on their couches and drink all day until they kicked him out of their houses. He openly said he was drinking so much that all he could eat was a little soup every day because he stomach was so torn up from the alcohol.

-Documentaries are tough, because they could have asked Chael a number of questions about Evan, and then just aired the footage of that criticism of him. He could have spent 90% of the time talking about the good things about the guy (doubt it), but then they air the bad things he had to say. And let’s be honest, even Evan Tanner would agree he had a lot of bad sides to him.

-Maybe Chael didn’t like the guy. That doesn’t make him a dick. Forrest seemed a little wierded out by Tanner’s odd take on life. Evan was strange. And he was irresponsible. I always liked him, but his pseaudo-philosphical ramblings weren’t always the most intelligent things I’ve ever heard. But I thought he always seemed like his heart was in the right place. I also never had him mooch off of my couch or my gym. I might think differently if I had those experiences with him.

-Why am I defending Chael Sonnen? Who cares what he thinks?

I can’t understand why people are posthumously heaping praise on Evan Tanner. I didn’t buy it the first time I witnessed it on them interwebs, and I don’t buy it now. At best his is the life of a person with serious issues. However, an early death seems to have sanctified this man.

When, a fighter runs 1-4 in his last 5 fights, this site would be writing of his decline as a fighter and that his insistence on fighting would only cause him irreparable harm. As a fighter, Evan suffered significant lacking in refined technique. He didn’t dodge or slip punches and kicks preferring to block punches and kicks with his face instead. Moreover, he was often stymied by proficient ground games. I would argue that he won the championship during a time of a talent vacuum in the middleweight division. Could Tanner really have competed with the deep talent in the UFC middleweight division today? No.

I don’t buy it, and I’m not going to by the crap that Chael Sonnen is a douche because of what he said in the documentary. There is no secret in that Evan Tanner made bad decisions. Furthermore, there is nothing in the record of Evan Tanner’s life since competing in MMA at which one could point to as evidence of intellect. Hell, the guy went camping in an inhospitable dessert with few supplies. He dropped out of college because he was not getting an education. There is the contact lens anecdote from Couture, he lived on a boat he sank because he didn’t know how to sail, and he almost died hiking in the Grand Canyon with only a bottle of water. He didn’t even speak intelligently. He may have been a thoughtful, introspective man, but I don’t think he was intelligent. May Evan Tanner rest in peace. I’m not going to posthumously heap praise on the man.

Chael Sonnen trained with tanner for years and it was a common bitch among team quest that he was only inteested in training when HE had something important. He didnt give a crap about anyone besides himself and all the thing Sonnen said about myspace and silva were 100% true. And yes adults return phone calls, at least men do.
