Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Check Out These Outtakes from the Upcoming Evan Tanner Documentary

(VidProps: YouTube/OnceIWasAChampion)

If you’re looking for an excuse to get a little bit misty-eyed this morning, you should definitely check out the above trailer for the forthcoming documentary about the late Evan Tanner. Titled “Once I Was a Champion,” the movie – produced at least in part by Tapout Films, according to the trailer – is  reportedly being submitted for review by film festivals this month, where hopefully it’ll get some widespread play. If there’s one dude from MMA who deserves to have a film dedicated to his life, it’s probably Tanner. The former UFC middleweight champion certainly had his fair share of adventures (and perhaps personalities) which helped shape a quirky public persona, prior to his untimely death in the fall of 2008.

The trailer is legitimately pretty stirring and it seems like the full documentary itself is going to be pretty awesome. There are a slew of MMA luminaries involved, sharing their mostly positive remembrances of Tanner, while giving a nod to the troubled fighter’s “natural frailty.” Then you get to Chael Sonnen’s brief appearance at about the two minute mark and you think producers must have taken these comments out of context, not even Sonnen is this big of a dick. Then you watch the expanded video of Sonnen’s comments and you realize, nope, he really is a dick. See Sonnen’s performance and a few more fighters talking about Tanner after the jump.

Chael Sonnen on Tanner:

Forrest Griffin:

Rich Franklin:

Guy Metzger:

Good stuff, for the most part. There are plenty more vids at the “Once I Was a Champion” YouTube page, if you are interested. There will be a press screening of the film in May, followed (we assume) by a wider release.

Sonnen is such a dick. I bet his own mother hates him. If they fight again, I hope Anderson caves his face in...

Eh, maybe I was a bit hard on him. Hmm. Hard on. I do like hard ons. I probably shouldn't admit this on a website, but now that I mention it, I fucking looooooooove to suck cock. Dude, I just like the way balls smell, the feel of the pubic hair against my face, the feeling like I'm about to choke. I love it all. Just fill my throat with your sausage, that's what I'm really saying here.

Two peas in a pod, guys. While Sonnen has microdick who commits fraud, Tanner was an adult prioritizing MySpace over his phone. Unthinkable.

Brought a tear to my eye, I forgot how much I liked this dude.
RIP my friend I truly hope you have found what you were looking for, you were certainly
one of a kind.

I am with R Wilson.. truth be told I saw that video of Chael right after the death.. moving on now it looks crude at the time it was not bad.. as R Wilson told the story most followers of Evan Tanner knew he had problems.

You don't go on a camping trip that far into the desert alone.. PERIOD.

Evan as we all know on screen was a great guy that gave it his all.. but in real life he had some failings. All the best suffer.. it is harder on the most talented than it is on those with less promise. Evan had lots of promise and it weighed on him.

I was a huge fan and was heart broken with his loss.
I will forever remember him fondly, but to blame Chael well after the fact is absurd.

What Chael said was the truth and for those who know better.. there was no offence... except for the dick who wrote this story.

Any time someone takes his own life it is difficult but you can't run away from the truth... Evan had some serious disorders.. no matter how much he was loved.. and the further he pushed into the abyss the further he got.

Unfortunately if enough Chael's had spoken directly to Evan and not just to the camera, maybe he would've realized he was more normal than not, and we would've still had him with us today.

This is a story about focus and there are people around you every day that suffer from mental illness.. and need you to save them with the truth.

Will you man up.. or will you lick their ball sack and watch them die before their time.

With the economy, housing market, employment, many people are lining up at bridges.. it is ordinary people like us that make a difference.

RwilsonR- February 11, 2011 at 3:33 pm
Fuck! Damn no 'edit'! I meant 'distracted with work while I was writing it.'
RwilsonR- February 11, 2011 at 3:33 pm
Sorry Sudos. I actually didn't read your's until after I posted mine, because I got distracted with while I was writing it. And now we lack an 'edit' feature...

I know it's a really random comment but does anyone have a link to the Evan Tanner tribute video that was posted on CagePotato ages ago? It used to be up on Youtube and I can't find it after hours of searching. I thought it was a pretty cool video and a way for people to get to know the great man.
Joemilla- February 11, 2011 at 2:54 pm
people need to seriously stop interviewing chael sonnen. what a prick. never says anything relevant, makes outlandish and hypocritical comments and is just talking so that you hear him, and not for any other purpose. how can you seriously talk about something you couldn't POSSIBLY know all the details of in a situation like this?

maybe because chael has been triangled so many times he fails to remember the charges being brought on him for fraud or that he popped for PED's.

apparently the epitome of an adult is cheating bitch.

Also did you just learn the word posthumously? You used it about 37 times in your shitting on the character of a dead man you never knew.
portland mma- February 11, 2011 at 2:39 pm
I'm not saying Evan was the best guy on Earth but a lot of people on here are making it sound like he was a horrible human being. And big funkie you don't seem to know what the fuck you're talking about, people are just talking about Evan being an interesting different kind of DIY dude and your acting like he's fuckin Satan because he went 1-4, had technique you weren't a fan of (one that he taught himself through Gracie videos by the way), dropped out of college (according to you and your plethora of personal knowledge of him) lacked intellect, and went into the desert to die(by the way the spring he was supposed to get his water from was also unexpectedly dry)...these seem like some pretty stupid fucking reasons to posthumously shit on the man.
BigPhil- February 11, 2011 at 2:32 pm
I really didn't know that much about Evan Tanner so I can't make an evaluation of what he was like. However, I have to say that I really don't think Chael was being a dick. If Evan Tanner hadn't have died so tragically, if he was still alive, or if Randy Couture had given it, I think that a lot of people would see that interview and agree with it. And also, if you are saying Chael is being a dick, then you would have to say that Forrest is being a dick too. They were both saying, and what others have said, that Evan Tanner was, regardless of his fighting skills, kind of different dude, who had some problems.
BigFunkie- February 11, 2011 at 1:42 pm
Well put. I am not a "Tanner-hater." However, I was not a huge fan. I enjoyed watching some of his fights, but there are miles of difference between that and posthumously praising him for the great man he was.
Daddy_jeffy- February 11, 2011 at 1:40 pm
Hey Big Funkie,
Why don't you just post with your real name, Chael?
Jeffy out
RwilsonR- February 11, 2011 at 1:37 pm
Just to clarify, I am by no means a Tanner hater. Somewhere around 2003-04, Tanner was one of my absolute favorite fighters. His fights with Baroni were epic, and about the only reason I still have any respect for Baroni. Tanner was an awesome fighter to watch.
pootpoot- February 11, 2011 at 1:37 pm
he died, let it die,
he didn't change anybody or anything,
just a marketing ploy by those who own his estate to start selling books and whatnot
pootpoot- February 11, 2011 at 1:35 pm
youtube "evan tanner - for a better world" and even try sitting through part 1, its a bunch of rambling and banter, and in the end he wanted to be heard, but what he wanted to be heard is....who knows....sounded like he was off his rocker
RwilsonR- February 11, 2011 at 1:32 pm
I'm not defending Chael, but here are a few things to think about...

-When Chael knew him at Team Quest, they had asked Evan to leave because of all of his personal problems. After that, Evan drifted around, and in his own words said that he pretty much burned every bridge with every friend he ever had, because he would use their kindness to sleep on their couches and drink all day until they kicked him out of their houses. He openly said he was drinking so much that all he could eat was a little soup every day because he stomach was so torn up from the alcohol.

-Documentaries are tough, because they could have asked Chael a number of questions about Evan, and then just aired the footage of that criticism of him. He could have spent 90% of the time talking about the good things about the guy (doubt it), but then they air the bad things he had to say. And let's be honest, even Evan Tanner would agree he had a lot of bad sides to him.

-Maybe Chael didn't like the guy. That doesn't make him a dick. Forrest seemed a little wierded out by Tanner's odd take on life. Evan was strange. And he was irresponsible. I always liked him, but his pseaudo-philosphical ramblings weren't always the most intelligent things I've ever heard. But I thought he always seemed like his heart was in the right place. I also never had him mooch off of my couch or my gym. I might think differently if I had those experiences with him.

-Why am I defending Chael Sonnen? Who cares what he thinks?
