Chisora Slapped With Fine and Indefinite Ban by WBC for Slap On Klitschko, Brawl With and Death Threat to Haye

(Boxing: Making MMA fans since 1996)

The World Boxing Council yesterday handed down a stiff punishment to heavyweight Derek Chisora for what they have termed “one of the worst behaviors ever by a professional boxer” in the months and days leading up to and the hours after his February 18 championship bout with Vitali Klitschko in Munich.

Besides the usual smack talk, Chisora not only slapped the champ’s face at the weigh-ins the day before the fight, he left the dais at the post-fight press conference and bum-rushed David Haye. When Haye got the better of him in the ensuing exchange, the infuriated  Zimbabwe-born, UK-raised fighter declared that he was going to get a gun and kill the brash British fighter for “glassing him” with the Corona bottle he was holding when he dropped Chisora.

In actuality, the bottle never made contact with Chisora’s face, but the neck would have reinforced Haye’s fist like a roll of quarters.

Here’s part of the statement released last night by the WBC:

The WBC is absolutely condemning behaviors that are not to be accepted in boxing under any circumstances and will act as soon as it can proceed to impose the fines and sanctions as we consider necessary.

The WBC is imposing a serious fine to be finally determined after the hearing to be held under the supervision of our counsel representative attorney Stephen Beverly , the WBC will also take off from the WBC rankings, the name of Derek Chisora and declare an indefinite suspension against fighting again for a WBC title, while demanding Chisora to take an anger management medical treatment after which his suspension will be reconsidered.

Klitschko addressed Chisora’s seemingly escalating antics back in 2010:

“It’s not about getting me angry. It’s about the behavior of this man. The way he was raised was probably questionable. The way he behaves himself — that he bites in the fights the ear a couple of times that I saw,” Klitschko explained. “He beats up his girlfriend who cannot punch back. Chisora as a fighter, I think he’s talented and I think he’s better than David Haye. Chisora as a person, I think he is garbage.”

Can’t say we disagree.

I love boxing as a sport but as an establishment it can blow me. It's slimy its incredibly two faced and it's always got some absurd agenda on it's mind so to you the Establishment of BOXING, I say get your shit together or prepare for a rough ten years.

@kid Clam Curtains... many people get defensive in this conversation but I actually don't think it's a comparison of the sports. (MMA striking vs Boxing) Sure a K1 striker or Muay Thai striker has more weapons at their disposal but take the level of fighter in general. Boxing has more participants worldwide, it's governed tightly as an Olympic sport. More importantly there is MUCH more money in it. I think with all things equal the advantage goes to whoever has the most weapons, but in reality all things have not been equal. The talent level is higher in boxing than K1 because there is and has always been much more money there and there is more access to it. I consider it a jack of all trades vs a master of one. With that said, as the pay increases in MMA and it eventually hits a point where most the athletes don't require full time jobs as well as their fighting career, things will change.

@Kid Clam Curtains
Hunt would win a striking contest against anybody, The dude is a K1 grand prix winner, he might have not deserved to be in it do his record and losses but he still won it cause of his granite chin and incredible power. He would drop Overeem, Destroy Barry although Dos santos would probably destroy him since he is fast as a lightweight.
i love barry but he should get someone else, i would hate to see him loose.

MRuss! Hey while I have your ear might you want to change the foto viewer? Great foto, can't believe someone got that still. MPenn - if the glass had broken, Chisora would've been bleeding. Like "Adam" whoever that dude is.

@mcw89138 - Yeah, well written reply, nice list. Obviously I would add the 209 to that list :) Arlovski would want to test his world-renown flying knee techniques against a championship boxer.

Haye didn't smash the bottle in his face.

Chisora should definitely be banned. But why doesn't anybody talk about Haye? Dude smashed a bottle in the guys face!

Kid Clam Curtains- February 29, 2012 at 10:59 am
I wonder how Chisora would handle a Pat Barry leg kick.
Kid Clam Curtains- February 29, 2012 at 10:58 am
James Toney should have to fight Mark Hunt in an mma fight.
mcw89138- February 29, 2012 at 10:57 am
@ Mofo, though I totally agree Chisora would be dominated on the ground, there are some MMA fighters who likely would be dumb enough to stand and bang with him because (i) they're egomaniacs who want to show the world they're a better striker than a championship contender boxer, (ii) they want to test themselves standing up against a championship contender boxer, or (iii) both. Notwithstanding the differences in weight classes, MMA fighters who might fit into these categories include Arlovski, Houston Alexander, Rampage, Chris Leben, Wanderlei, Cung Le, and possibly Anderson Silva given his desire to test himself in a boxing match against Roy Jones. If the UFC were to sign Chisora, I'm sure Dana White would want to embarrass him like Toney to stick it to boxing, so they would probably carefully select an opponent like Couture who they are certain would follow the company's game plan and press Chisora from opening bell for a takedown.

@mcw89138 I'm not sure its that simple to say a boxer would beat a an mma fighter at striking in an mma fight. Sure, a high level boxer would smash the shit out of an mma fighter with boxing rules but mma rules would give a K-1 or muay thai striker a huge advantage over a boxer in an mma fight. I'd take Badr Hari or another high level striker all day over any of these boxers in an mma fight. Using elbows knees and kicks would make it an easy fight for a guy like Anderson, Overeem, Jon Jones, etc. These guys train boxing all the time but a boxer never trains to fight a kickboxer. Their defense is based solely on avoiding damage from punches and never takes into account a kick, knee or elbow...or god forbid a takedown. Obviously a guy like Chisora has talent and could probably be a great MMA fighter but there's no way he'd do it now or even in a couple years. he'd have to have trained for years in every other discipline to even have a chance.
Mofo- February 29, 2012 at 10:45 am
Wait, mcw89138, do you have amnesia? You do remember how the fight with Toney went down, right? It doesn't need to be said, but I'll say it anyway: every single MMA fighter would take Chisora down. (Though personally I would LOVE to see a boxer takin' niggaz out)
mcw89138- February 29, 2012 at 10:42 am
If Chisora is permanently banned from boxing, I wonder if any MMA promotions would be interested in taking a gamble on him? He would get dominated on the ground, but he could drop most MMA heavyweights who are dumb enough to stand and bang with him. The level of striking in championship boxing is at a whole different level than MMA. Even the best boxers in the UFC would get taunted and humiliated if they tried to box with a championship contender boxer. Last year Joe Rogan made the video below in which around the 3 minute mark he talks about this point with respect to James Toney. The same is true of Chisora, and there are plenty of MMA heavyweights like Arlovski and Brett Rogers who would likely make the mistake of trying to stand and bang with Chisora.

Dakota Cockring totally bum-rushed that dude.

It's because he is black, isn't it.
