Classic Fight: Georges St. Pierre vs. Travis Galbraith

(Props: V4YDEN via MMA Scraps)

October 2002, Montreal. With first-round stoppages against Ivan Menjivar and Justin Bruckmann under his belt, Georges St. Pierre (2-0) was already the welterweight champion of the Canada-based Universal Combat Challenge when he stepped into the ring against Edmonton native Travis Galbraith, who was a slightly-more-seasoned 5-1 at the time. It took St. Pierre all of four seconds to score the double-leg takedown — Rush was already a natural at age 21 — and aside from an armlock attempt, Galbraith didn’t have much to offer on the ground.

The real reason to check out this fight if you’ve never seen it before is the unique finish, which starts around 3:23. With Galbriath’s arms locked around GSP’s arm and neck, St. Pierre pulls up and drives Galbriath’s head against the mat a couple times. After throwing in a couple of conventional strikes, GSP goes back to the brutal short-slams until his opponent is dazed and the ref stops the fight. After two more wins in Canada, St. Pierre earned his ticket to the UFC. And hopefully we’ll see this finishing move again someday…

@bigcountry: Looks like GSP has a nuthugger here in bigcountry! hahaha
danomite- July 15, 2010 at 6:50 am

some things to note from this video:
1. Travis Girlbreath apparently didn't study for his "what the fuck" test
2. Georges was a nice guy even back then. I couldn't hear but he probably told Girlbreath that he will come back stronger and that he was his toughest opponent.
3. The myth that GSP was a striker who started taking the fight to the ground after he lost to Serra was clearly just that, a dumb myth.
4. If the USA ever starts speaking both English and Spanish on a regular basis at sporting events I will move to Sweden.
5. Georges must not be taking the right kinds of steroids. He looks bigger then than he does now to me.

and although this has nothing to do with the video but god damn, "Pretty Mouth" Floyd Mayweather won FIGHTER of the year award? he shouldn't have even come in second. He wasn't even the best BOXER of the year. Maybe Georges should start ducking real competition and taking has beens and Strikeforce washouts to decision, then he might win the ESPY. Fuck Floyd Mayweather, I hope he goddamn dies.

Galbraith was a real prick in defeat.

Yeh I'm wondering why that kid was so mad. The last few "slams" actually look like GSP is dropping his elbow right on the kid's throat. I think that may be it. That's not a legal blow. Despite what Frank Shamcock says (Melendez/Aoki).

Any other guesses?

What was the other guy mad about? That GSP hit him?

Oh way to go fella, hide your insidious racist ideology behind your rabid nationalism. That's okay, I already contacted the Southern Poverty Law Center and Morris Dees is strapping on some snow shoes as we speak. He's gonna walk the dog on your ass, Mr. Great White North. We the goddamn meltin' pot, son.

OMFG.....USA USA USA your country is not any more special than any other, better than some, and worse than others, Same goes for Canada eh!
I love your patriotism but think it's so fucking funny the majority of your High School Students and most citizens for that matter, know less about US History than the average Canadian.....want proof?

BTW I knew every answer.
PurplePickle- July 14, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Now that I got that out of the way, it aint just dearest Georges that I was talking about in my earlier comment. GSP, Koscheck, Hardy, Fitch, hell almost every UFC WW but Lytle it seems likes to take it to the judges nowadays.

As for the other commenters, I don't know if xenophobia is behind their Rush hate or not, but I suspect you are a GSP fan solely due to the deep seated racism of your upbringing. Shame on you.

I sense some Team America....fuck ya! shit going on here.
JMO but every time a Canadian fighter is mentioned here the Blame Canada shit starts.
I think Brock is "Juicin", I think he is boring as hell to watch, and a shitty fighter. I think he takes a bath in astroglide.....there that felt good....all kidding aside, GSP is a GREAT FIGHTER.

St-Pierre is ranked as the top "pound for pound" fighter by Yahoo Sports. He is currently ranked by multiple MMA publications as the number-one welterweight in the world.

His only loss since January 29, 2005 was Mat Sera, a loss he handily erased in their next meeting on April 19, 2008.
With a 20-2 record 8 by KO, 5 by Sub, and 7 by decision, I think he's earned some respect in the UFC and the USA. BTW 14 of those wins were against Team America,.....FUCK YA!

But your right, he is boring,......phfffft! Whatever!

when Lesnar makes $400k to Carwins $40k, wouldnt u do the right thing and insure yer paycheck too?

I"D make damn sure i was on top, i"d stay on top for as long as i could. cuz when u fall, that shit fuckin hurts.

would love to see GSP say fuck it n go out throwing tho
Crusader86- July 14, 2010 at 3:08 pm
Damn, he went all gorilla on his ass.
nesbitt- July 14, 2010 at 2:54 pm
he only got boring after serra beat him up. he had some amazing strikes when he was first coming up in the ufc. he was one of the best to watch. after that fight though, he's just played it safe and wrestled the victory.
knucklesamitch- July 14, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Meh...It's still boring.
BrutusBox- July 14, 2010 at 2:40 pm
i'll take care of that, GSP clearly abuses steroids.
no thanks required.
BigCountrysCholesterol- July 14, 2010 at 2:32 pm
So: one knock on his present fighting style, and one knock on his alleged greasing. Topdog, I think you should go for the trifecta of trolling and throw some steroid accusations out there, as well.
topdog- July 14, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Nice rare finish from GSP! Only if he could do that now but instead he has reduced his career to boring 5rd. sparring sessions just like his boxing counterpart Mayweather. Besides he was probably greasing in this fight?

Hopefully we will see a finish in a welterweight fight again someday.
Charming Charlie- July 14, 2010 at 1:54 pm
I don't understand what made Galbraith's head follow GSP's elbow up after each strike/slam. Are we really supposed to believe it was GSP's left arm, underneath Galbraith's ribcage and shoulder, lifting up his entire upper half?
KrmtDfrog- July 14, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Like in a triangle, you gotta know when to give up the hold so you don't get KTFO'd by a slam
