Completely Unfounded Rumor of the Day: Diaz Meets Penn at UFC 137

Diaz wasn’t born with enough middle fingers.

The story of the week, by all rights, should have been that the UFC triumphed again and put together a huge heavyweight fight at the end of the year … until Nick Diaz wigged out and went AWOL, missing two beauty pageants press conferences and losing his shot at GSP’s title and all the riches that would follow. Now every MMA site on the web has three stories about the man from the 209, and we won’t start talking about Lesnar-Overeem until mid-September at the earliest.

Since we’re all speculating, CagePotato thought we would pass on this delicious rumor:  Nick Diaz will still be competing at UFC 137, against BJ Penn.

Dana White told MMAJunkie yesterday that he was working on finding an opponent to replace Carlos Condit, and he obviously had someone in mind, saying “if I told you what I want to do with that fight you guys would flip out, so we’ll see what happens.”

See, White has a real problem in Diaz.  The last thing Zuffa wants to do is release him, since he would immediately sign a deal with another promotion like EliteXC or Bellator and be fighting again before Halloween.  Despite all the backlash against Diaz in the last twelve hours, he’s still a massively popular fighter because of his style, and White has started to catch on to the fact that cutting fighters too quickly only makes his competition stronger.

Expect the UFC to take the stance that pulling Diaz from the title fight is sufficient punishment for his unreliability and general sketchiness, and for them to carry on with “business as usual” with Diaz.  And the first step in that process will be the announcement that Diaz will have to face Baby Jay to start making amends.

A match between the two would be intriguing because both fighters have sharp boxing skills backed up with superlative groundwork, and both fighters have been criticized for inconsistency in the past.  Of course, Penn is inconsistent in that you never know who will show up at a BJ Penn fight, while Diaz is not consistently a rational human being.   The result:  a fight every bit as unpredictable and competitive as Diaz himself.

Now if they can just get him back into the Octagon…

Zuffa had zero problem with Diaz... If he leaves, goodbye. If he stays, he is a year out from any title fight. Diaz is fine, he knows how to play the showboat game, better than his financiers. They got bested, and embarrassed.
Go Diaz, and your punk brother - best.

I'd love to see that fight, actually more then Diaz V GSP.

Penn would have taken a savage beating from Condit. Would have been a sweet fight though. I hope Condit can get a hold of GSP. That would be too sweet if he could do the ol "Beat him til he stops moving thing." Diaz is gonna get Titoed!

@ snackD - How would this be a dickish move by Dana? Dickish to whom?

I think Stephan Bonner has a better chance in a rematch against Machida than Rich or BJ. Bonnar so fast and slick. He like Superman. Did you see him flipping around on the mat and frickin' FLYING when he was fighting Bones?!?

I don't care what happens to Diaz or BJ. I'm very happy that Condit/GSP is going to happen. Condit brings a real X factor with his broad skillset and ability to pull striking OR grappling 'holy shits' out of his ass.

"Diaz wasn’t born with enough middle fingers. "

Or brain cells.

I still hope Diaz is cut completely. But if he does get to fight Penn, I hope it also comes with a HUGE pay cut.

this will be an extremely dickish move by Dana if it actually happens. i think diaz won't be fighting at all. not on this card at least.

i say give him rory macdonald. a young up and coming fighter with great potential and could possibly raise his stock greatly by beating diaz. i should say by beating nick diaz since he already beat the shit out of nate diaz. it is a win win for the ufc since macdonald losing early in his career wouldn't be too monumentous for him to overcome and a win by diaz would put him on the road for redemption. i think macdonald would beat the thc outta diaz anyway.

nick isnt going to fight anyone most likely his stupid dumbganstamentality ass is going to be filing for unemployment, until bellator picks him up, and even then if he cant stay focused enough for the fucking UFmuthafuckingC i think the smaller orginazations might even think twice about hiring him should he indeed be booted...

Nick sir ...have your head straight up your own ass..
maybe you should have brock lesnar pull it out for you

Dana's comment made me think that it was someone popular from another weight class, not that it would be nick diaz.
Chri534.- September 8, 2011 at 8:17 am
Ha, I think Rich has a better shot at a Machida rematch than Penn.
Bob Villa- September 8, 2011 at 8:11 am
He's gonna give Penn a rematch with Machida.
Chri534.- September 8, 2011 at 8:02 am
This fight was the first I thought of when I heard that comment by Dana, but before then I thought it was a no-brainer to give BJ a rematch with Jon Fitch. Now, there's no reason that Penn should be the one getting punished here, so he probably has his choice. Do you think he would choose to fight Diaz over giving Fitch a rematch?

'Delicious rumor?'....hello Frisco!!
Todd M- September 8, 2011 at 7:57 am
I will be rooting for Penn, thanks for making that decision easy Nick
Todd M- September 8, 2011 at 7:48 am
It would be an awesome fight
NotReadyStatus- September 8, 2011 at 7:42 am
It is certainly a theory that is in line with Dana's comment that “if I told you what I want to do with that fight you guys would flip out, so we’ll see what happens.”, but NO FUCKING WAY. Dana is making an example of Nick, and I don't think that would be the way to do it.
Viva Hate- September 8, 2011 at 7:34 am
Next up, Carlos Conduiit is forced to pull out of his upcoming fight with GSP forcing BJ Penn to step up. BJ Penn is then forced out of the fight and is replcaed by Nick Diaz, it is the circle of life my friends.
