Couture vs. Nogueira, Jardine vs. Silva + 7 More Bouts Confirmed for UFC 102

Earlier today, the UFC distributed its first poster image for UFC 102 (August 29th; Portland, Oregon), making the top two fights official — Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event, and Keith Jardine vs. Thiago Silva as a lead-in. Interesting…is this the first UFC event that’s being headlined by four guys who are coming off losses? Would it have been that hard to slot Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt (who are also on the card) in the co-main spot? After all, that fight will produce a legitimate middleweight title contender, even if Michael Bisping or Dan Henderson could sneak to the front of the line depending on their performance next month. Meanwhile, Jardine and Silva aren’t getting close to the 205-pound belt anytime soon.

Tickets to UFC 102 go on sale to Fight Club members on Thursday, newsletter members on Friday, and will probably be sold out by the time they’re released to the general public on Saturday. In addition to Couture/Nogueira, Jardine/Silva, and Maia/Marquardt, the following bouts have also been confirmed for UFC 102, according to

Chris Leben vs. Jake Rosholt (MW, main card)
Matt Hamill vs. Brandon Vera (LHW, main card)
Wilson Gouveia vs. James Irvin (MW, preliminary card)
Junior Dos Santos vs. Justin McCully (HW, preliminary card)
Nick Catone vs. Mark Munoz (LHW, preliminary card)
Matt Veach vs. Evan Dunham (LW, preliminary card)

I love mma and I'm not intrigued by these fights. Style match ups can't make a fight exciting when you don't really give a shit who wins or loses.

Nog Cotoure has lost it's luster, I'd have been pumped for this a year ago. Jardine and Silva, I just don't really care about either of them.

Marquardt/Maia is the only one that I'm pretty interested to see. Randy/Nog I will probably enjoy even though it's a little late. The rest of the card... booooooooorrrrrrriiiinnngg.

Imo this card has two fights worth watching, and none worth paying for.

You guys have Catone/Munoz listed as LHW but I assumed that Munoz was dropping down to middleweight, right?

I just don't see why Catone would go up.

Look, if you love MMA, these are some intriguing, exciting fights. Couture v. Nog - elite wrestler w/ boxing v BJJ master with boxing? Won't be a battle of explosiveness - it's a battle of technique and two of the biggest hearts in the sport.
Jardine v. Silva - neither is a future champ. Both fight hard, and are aggressive. It will be stand and bang, Silva won't be able to keep Jardine down.
Marquardt v. Maia - Marquardt has sick grappling, king of pancrase, only Maia or Palhares could tap him. On the feet, Maia is aggressive, doesn't run like Leites. Electric matchmaking.
Hammil v. Vera - Hammil is getting destroyed by an olympic wrestler with explosive muay thai. Vera will be back in the mix.
Plus likely KO's by Dos Santos and Gouveia. Good shit.

Heh, it is similar...although, Jake O'brien was supposed to be more of a test for Cain, seeing as he had previously defeated Heath Herring (although was coming off a loss to Arlovski). It just seems to be like the quality of opponent is worsening, always good to get some experience under your belt though. Really what I want is to see him up against another big name.

I think Maia is gonna get fucking knocked around. Although I would like to see Maia win so he can get knocked out by Anderson.
SlapjawAckrite- June 16, 2009 at 5:57 pm
I know where you guys can catch some fights you'd like. Go to youtube and search "Kimbo Slice." Watch what this guy will do for bread!

ok seriously yall are stupid
AliveMMA- June 16, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Over the Hill and needs money vs. Over the Hill (Randy vs. Nog). These guys will prove that they are no better than Tim "old n outta shape" Silvia.

PPV? No thanks, I'll catch it on a live stream for free, or just not watch it at all. The ONLY UFC worth paying for is UFC 100.

Chris Leban is Gay
Matt Hamill is a is STRICTLY a wrestler and I hope he eats a ripe knee. I hate watching wrestlers try to fight, gay as hell. Tito likes him, so 'nough said.
Jake who?
Keith "uninteresting" Jardine... Who I used to like, but has done nothing but lose lately.
Basically any name that is recognizable is coming off a loss.

Fuck you ben...funny how this one went through.
Spacebump- June 16, 2009 at 4:48 pm
the Vera/Hamill fight should be interesting.
Bootylam- June 16, 2009 at 4:45 pm
No love for Veach? He was THE SHIT last time. Tougher than leather, son.
portland mma- June 16, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Even though they're past their prime who in their right mind doesn't want to see Nogueira and Couture? You've gotten to be a fucking moron not to want see two of the most legendary MMA fighters of all time face off.
Mike Milbury- June 16, 2009 at 3:54 pm
@raspberrymight: How so? Dana already said the winner of the Bisping/Hendo fight gets the MW title shot, who will have to wait until after Silva fights Griffin one month later (+The usual fighter downtime). And that fight is just weeks before Maia/Marquardt.
raspberrymight- June 16, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Nogueira vs Couture appeals purely because they've both done some amazing things in mma and both of their careers are slowly winding down, so it'll b interesting to see them fighting each other in their twilight years.

Maia - Marquardt fight is the only one that actually has any immediate ramifications regarding the result. So I'll be on the edge of my seat for that'un, even though im paying for the whole thing

Sheps- June 16, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Spoilt? The card is crappy.

Jardine = last fight was a loss to Rampage

Silva = last fight was a huge KO loss to Lyoto Machida

Couture = last fight was a big KO loss to Brock Lesnar

Nogueira = last fight was a massive TKO loss stoppage to Frank Mir

Joe Silva is putting on some crappy cards, these fools need to get some Table matches or tag teams going on cause who the hell wants to watch a bunch of past their prime fighters get it on.

Hell just fucking replace Thiago Silva with Chuck Liddell and the circle would be complete.
Clyde- June 16, 2009 at 3:32 pm
@Art; Very true on the Maia - Marquardt fight. I can't wait for that, I hope Maia can get it to the ground because he fucking rules. Or he may get tekkened on the feet. That's right, I used tekken as a verb.
portland mma- June 16, 2009 at 3:31 pm
King_KP they're bringing Dos Santos up the same way they brought Cain up. Velasquez' first 3 fights in the UFC were against Brad Morris, Jake O'brien and Dennis Stojnic. I think when they originally brought Dos Santos to the UFC they thought Fabricio Werdum was going to wreck him, since the opposite happened they viewed Dos Santos as a commodity that they can build up...just like Cain.
Deadpanda- June 16, 2009 at 3:25 pm
I'm not with ya'll, I'm looking forward to the majority of these match ups. Yeah they're not title shots but they're all good match ups stylistically.

I'm definitely seeing this.

(really excited about Marquardt v. Maia & Hamill v. Vera)
portland mma- June 16, 2009 at 3:24 pm
So glad the UFC is finally fucking coming to Portland.
King_KP- June 16, 2009 at 3:11 pm
The matchups that are being given to Junior Dos Santos are the most outrageous and nonsensical matchups I have ever witnessed. Top prospect in a lingering heavy weight division is sent to the prelims to knock out cans, meanwhile another top prospect (Velasquez) gets Kongo and is probably in line for a title shot after one or two more fights (max). Funny times.
Art Gibs- June 16, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Marquardt v. Maia is going to be sick. It's also going to be the most frequently misspelled bouts of all time.
Swedish- June 16, 2009 at 2:15 pm
This card blows any AssFliction card or Strikeforce out of the water....

You guys are a bunch of spoiled idiots

you guys are silly, great night card if you ask me. also supposed to have gonzaga vs tuscherer (brocks training partner, 17-1 and fucking huge) on prelim
NateGetsIrate- June 16, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Looks like yet another UFC event that i'll be reading about instead of watching...
Sheps- June 16, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Wow, is this like the first time in history all the main event fighters are coming off of losses...

Well this is going to be an awesome card thats for sure, its like watching the losers of a mediocre card go at it.

The only fight worth watching might be Brandon Vera Vs Matt Hamil, well thats if Vera doesn't get taken down and pounded on for the full 15 minutes, other than that its all meh.
