Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos Asks to Be Released from the UFC, Fight with Rousey Officially Not Happening

Props: HDNetFights

The hope of a Ronda Rousey vs. Cristiane “Cris Cyborg” Santos superfight in the UFC may have just gone up in smoke, for good this time. According to Cyborg’s manager — a bespectacled fellow by the name of Tito The Brain“ Ortiz — the formerly-feared Brazilian striker has officially refused to drop to 135 pounds to compete in the Octagon, and she’ll now be seeking opportunities elsewhere. Here’s what Ortiz had to say last night on Inside MMA:

Right now, we’re actually waiting for [the] UFC to release [Cyborg]. We asked for them to release her, so Dana White actually talked to me yesterday. They gave an offer, I went to Cyborg and she said she didn’t want to do it—and we just asked for her release.

Since [the UFC] isn’t doing a 145-pound weight class, what else can they do? Now, she’s going to be released. Maybe we’ll go look somewhere else and you can see Cyborg crush another woman’s face in.

As Ortiz tells it, Cyborg was willing to drop to 140 to meet Rousey at a catchweight — though not until her fourth fight in the UFC for some reason — but cutting an additional five pounds would be physically impossible for Cyborg, and the UFC didn’t want to budge on the point. (Women carry less water-weight, and can’t cut as much weight as men, Dr. Ortiz explained.) Now, the only female MMA superfight available isn’t happening, which is also a serious blow for the future of women’s MMA in the UFC. How long will fans care about a division that only features one star?

Thus far, we’ve generally sided with Rousey in her weight dispute with Cyborg. After all, Cyborg is the one coming back from a drug suspension, and has no authority to make demands on the champion, who happens to be the only reason that the UFC has a female division. But should the UFC have tried harder to make sure this match came together? Sure, 140 pounds is not a real weight class. But Rousey vs. Cyborg is a real fight.

"How long will fans care about a division that only features one star?"

Probably exactly one fight less than if rousey and cyborg actually fought. Did the women's division ever have a future after that fight went down anyway? This had one and done written all over it.

I dont personally know anyone who gives a shit about seeing cyborg fight again, and we got Tito of all people acting he's got the UFC over a log with this nonsense. LOL, fuckin dummy.

Cyborg Remain Lineal Champion.

I said without UFC Fedor would always have questions but Rhousey is good but she's not the Champ so getting in bed with the organization for one fight is bullshit. Rhousey is a pussy. She could make the drop easy. She's female Brock Lesnar. She sure is the champ and defended her belt but Cyborg has been doing it for years. Carano was shitted on all over the internet for not beating anyone. Then she beat Julie Kendzie, Tonya Evinger, and the woman who was supposed to end the hype train, Kaitlin Young got dropped on her ass... When Carano fought Cyborg Carano was the toughest bitch in the sport. And she ate her alive. So she is the lineal champ til someone takes it.

Rhousey's impressive but no one she ever beat was the #1 at the time. Tate is tough but she's a true 135. Rousey just loves to be bigger. Her arm bar hasn't been tested against someone who fights in the brazil slugger jiu-jitsu. I would like to see it. The catchweight where both women aren't all dried out. A real fight. That's all I'd like to see.

Look at the more traditional Japanese weight class system is better. The wrestling model of everyone fighting at their lowest possible weight to secure an advantage lowers the overall level of competition. And women and men have a number of physiological differences, just because some dudes can be the same height doesn't mean shit. There's few enough truly top female competition out there to not resort to the micro-weight classes yet. I still wanna enjoy this era before it moves on.

Just to be fair, I remember when a 155 weight class was made for Gina. She couldn't make that weight most of the time. I think if the UFC really cares about Super fights and WMMA, they would make this fight happen somehow. Also, I will say it again: Why would you ever hire Tito to manage anything?
enrikk- February 10, 2013 at 12:28 am
Thanks, Japandian. I was positive there were male fighters with her dimensions or better who made the 135 lb limit. All the guys who buy into the bullshit that Cyborg can't make the cut are seriously deluding themselves while hangin onto her nuts. All the musk must be clouding their judgement .
Japanadian- February 9, 2013 at 11:17 pm
cyborg 5'8" -145lbs
dominick cruz 5'8"-135lbs
there's actually 9 male fighters 5'8" and taller who make 135lbs. so what's the big fucking deal. these men should have bigger muscles meaning more weight. or are they not taking enough roids?

I'm calling bullshit. Tito thinks he's being a savvy negotiator. See? He tells everyone it isn't gonna happen because of the UFC, all the "fans" of Cyborg that so desperately want to see her fight in the UFC come pouring out of the woodwork to show Dana just how little they care about whether Cyborg's in the 135 lb division or not, and Dana's ready to compromise. Needless to say, Tito's a moron.

Seriously though, she can go build her brand elsewhere. This sport has one of the shortest memories out of any sport. It's all about what have you done for me lately, like within the last four months. All she has to do is go smash some random tits in and everybody will be back on her nuts.

It's different for the girls than it is for the guys. If you are a dude at the top of an organization and you've never fought in the UFC there are always certain questions left hanging in the air. Not so much with the two woman deep UFC WMMBA division. If Cyborg goes off and destroys everyone outside of the UFC again she'll just increase her bargaining position drastically.

Normally glasses make people look smarter. On Tito, it just makes him look like he's got a touch of the Down's.

Womans MMA is a sinking ship, it has one superstar with a tic on her face, and the other one is gone.... I mean lets be real Liz title shot above Hendo....... wtf
RwilsonR- February 9, 2013 at 3:54 pm
It is a well known medical fact that women's heads are twice as soft as the head of a deaf man, and that results in excess weight from the added soft tissue that cannot be cut.
rangerrexxx- February 9, 2013 at 3:35 pm
Cyborg can make the cut. She just doesn't want to. She' a steroid cheat! Fuck her! Let's move on.
