Cro Cop Back to the UFC If He Beats Choi on NYE?

(Unless he’s using it as a part-time chicken coop, what does Cro Cop want with a cage these days anyway?)

Our buddy Robert at FreeFightVideos has a report that suggests a return to the UFC for Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic might be as simple as a win over Hong Man Choi on New Year’s Eve.  Cro Cop has apparently been dropping hints lately that the fight at K-1 Dynamite will “end one chapter and start another” in his career, and insists he’s not retiring.  So okay, maybe he just means he’ll end the injury-riddled, lackluster performance chapter and begin another kicking ass chapter in 2009, right?

But Cro Cop has been increasingly vague about his plans for 2009, and when Dana White appeared on the “Best Damn Sports Show,” he stated that, “if [Cro Cop] wins, he will definitely be welcomed back into the UFC."

As Robert points out, Cro Cop still keeps a cage in his training facility, though he wouldn’t seem to have any use for it if he plans to keep fighting in Japan. Maybe the thing is just a pain in the ass to take down, or maybe he plans to come back to the UFC for some unfinished business.

Either way, does it seem odd to anyone else that a fight with Hong Man Choi, of all people, is the deciding factor in Cro Cop’s UFC career?  Choi is not really an MMA fighter.  He’s a kickboxer, in the loosest sense of the word, but mainly he’s a sideshow attraction.

Everyone mocked Fedor for even taking a fight with Choi, and now it’s the fight that determines Cro Cop’s readiness to reenter the Octagon?  Why not ask him to beat Alistair Overeem to prove himself?  Or beat…anyone else, really.  Anyone with actual MMA experience, who isn’t wearing a mask at the time of the fight.  Then again, where is he supposed to find an opponent like that on New Year’s Eve in Japan?

I gotta say, dropping to LHW is a terrible idea. LHW is full of faster more versatile strikers than Mirko, or at least the Mirko who's been showing up to fight in '08. Mirko's problem is that opponents have figured out how to shut down the one gameplan he's ever had. If he wants to launch a comeback he'll have to work more on other areas of striking than traditional kickboxing - improve his hands and muay thai clinch, and he might just have to swallow his pride and try a takedown or two.

Or maybe Cro Cop could drop to lightheavyweight and rematch Wandi? I would like to see Overeem in the UFC as well.

I think that the UFC should sign Tim Sylvia and Cro Cop and have them fight eachother. OR even Cro Cop vs Arlovski would be cool. The UFC would have to acquire Arlovski as well though..

xocgx You should be beaten soundly for ever insinuating CroCop to be fodder. That's total bullshit!

Doesn't Cro Cop still have one or two more fights in his UFC contract?

Tom's absolutely right about Kongo, he is the modern day 'Dirty Bob'.

sup homiez!

don get me wrong im from croatia, and im big crocop fan of course, but in our newspapers i read dat mirko will probabaly sign new contract wit dream after this freak show.cro cop will never return to ufc,he lost hes power, and i dont know what happend to him, maybe should retire, instead fighting canz.

ps.we all gotta admit cro cop will be remembered as top 5 hw of all times, only fighter who last 3 hard rounds with fedor.

Crocop vs. Big Nog 2 would be good.

Chiek Kongo should no longer be allowed to fight in the Octagon, no fighter should accept a fight against him anyways.

He got Crocop in the pills twice in their fight and purposely knocked Al-Turk in the nuts. We all knew it was coming and Mazagatti should've deducted a point. When Kongo can't win he low blows a guy. He is the Andrew Golota of MMA, a cheap fighter that open palms to the eyes and low blows.

I wonder what CC's strategy is coming into this fight. Take him down and sub him? How could he KO him? lol.
You're a bum!- December 29, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Y'all are missing the real story. He has the cage on his property because he's training with Al "Stankie" Stankiewicz. Al is channeling his fictional counterpart Mickey Goldmill, and keeps chickens at the training facility for Cro Cop to chase.

"C'mon, Mirko! Catch that chicken! You're gonna' get speed! Speed! You're gonna be able to eat lightning and crap thundah!"

"But Stankie, the chicken just flew into my crotch! He pecked at my balls, and now they've got back inside me...AGAIN!"

"You're a BUM, Mirko! A BUM! Where are my sardines?"

So Hong Man Choi is the gatekeeper...
Douchebaggery- December 29, 2008 at 12:06 pm
if crocop dropped to 205 and fights the way he has been fighting(no juice), Forrest would crush him...yes...CRUSH him.

So I'm watching the PPV this weekend and i mention about the New Years card... My brother proceeds to tell me i don't know shit about MMA because Choi is a true Contender in the MMA universe he gets so pissed off i thought he was gonna start a fight can you believe that shit! IDK which is worst the fact he almost wanted to fight about an opinion on how good a fighter is or the fact he calling Choi a legitimate fighter, Oh wait yes i do know which is worst!! FUCK THAT FREAKSHOW!!
Anonymous- December 29, 2008 at 10:35 am
i agree that if he comes back he should drop to lhw....i mean he walks around at like 225...or i would love to see randy vs cro cop!! at hw or lhw
Sodak- December 29, 2008 at 10:22 am
Hell yeah! i'd like to see him fight overeem first, everyone calls choi a freakshow and discounts him but hes fucking huge fighting a guy that big ain't easy for anybody he might be a slow awkward striker but if he gets a hold of you thats alot of weight to deal w. crocopos a bad ass i don't care if he lost a decision win to kongo who hit him in the nuts and lost to gonzaga cause he wasn't used to elbows (shitty stand up by the ref by the way which caused him to get ko'd)

Great time to come back, with the heavyweight division hotting up.

I think he can be a good link between the upcoming stars (Cigano, Valasquez, Carwin), and the four who just competed in the mini-tournament.

He could also be a good test for Kongo prior to a title shot, or how’s about a rematch with Nogueira?
Jugger- December 29, 2008 at 10:05 am
The problem is, any fighter he fights in the UFC will push the pace and never let him shift his weight to his right foot. If CroCop is back-pedaling to his right, he can't get his left foot in the firing chamber. Without his LHK he's no longer a top 10 HW. He will continue to lose against legit opponents until he gets a new game plan or expands his skill-set.
Billy Bad Ass- December 29, 2008 at 9:46 am
Why doesn't he just drop to LHW if he returns back to UFC. He can fight at either HW or LHW. I think his striking has the ability to make him dominate in LHW.
mayhem420- December 29, 2008 at 9:35 am
I wouldnt mind seeing Mirko back in the UFC as they still have some good match ups that he can face. Hell even if the match doesnt mean anything they can still be good drawing cards.
Mirko vs Randy
Mirko vs Chuck
Mirko vs any of the young HW fighters

So even if he isnt the killer he once was the UFC still has some good fights it could put on.
Crap Factory- December 29, 2008 at 9:30 am
Cro Cop was never as good as he was made out to be. In recent years he's done nothing special. His short career in the UFC wasn't short enough if you ask me.
milo bing- December 29, 2008 at 9:24 am
i for one, would love to see crocop redeem himself in the ufc.
Anonymous- December 29, 2008 at 9:19 am
I really think it's more that he WON'T be welcome back if he loses to a freakshow than that he has to beat one to prove himself.
xocgx- December 29, 2008 at 9:17 am
Don't neglect the value Cro Cop has as fodder for validating someone they DO want to keep around.

Cain Valasquez and Shane Carwin need wins over a top named guy....beating Cro cop can do that for both....or let Big Nog beat him so he's back on his way to the top.

If anything, cro cop is a force again.
