(Unless he’s using it as a part-time chicken coop, what does Cro Cop want with a cage these days anyway?)
Our buddy Robert at FreeFightVideos has a report that suggests a return to the UFC for Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic might be as simple as a win over Hong Man Choi on New Year’s Eve. Cro Cop has apparently been dropping hints lately that the fight at K-1 Dynamite will “end one chapter and start another” in his career, and insists he’s not retiring. So okay, maybe he just means he’ll end the injury-riddled, lackluster performance chapter and begin another kicking ass chapter in 2009, right?
But Cro Cop has been increasingly vague about his plans for 2009, and when Dana White appeared on the “Best Damn Sports Show,” he stated that, “if [Cro Cop] wins, he will definitely be welcomed back into the UFC."
As Robert points out, Cro Cop still keeps a cage in his training facility, though he wouldn’t seem to have any use for it if he plans to keep fighting in Japan. Maybe the thing is just a pain in the ass to take down, or maybe he plans to come back to the UFC for some unfinished business.
Either way, does it seem odd to anyone else that a fight with Hong Man Choi, of all people, is the deciding factor in Cro Cop’s UFC career? Choi is not really an MMA fighter. He’s a kickboxer, in the loosest sense of the word, but mainly he’s a sideshow attraction.
Everyone mocked Fedor for even taking a fight with Choi, and now it’s the fight that determines Cro Cop’s readiness to reenter the Octagon? Why not ask him to beat Alistair Overeem to prove himself? Or beat…anyone else, really. Anyone with actual MMA experience, who isn’t wearing a mask at the time of the fight. Then again, where is he supposed to find an opponent like that on New Year’s Eve in Japan?

commentscrocop R.I.P. im afraid
Tom's absolutely right about Kongo, he is the modern day 'Dirty Bob'.
don get me wrong im from croatia, and im big crocop fan of course, but in our newspapers i read dat mirko will probabaly sign new contract wit dream after this freak show.cro cop will never return to ufc,he lost hes power, and i dont know what happend to him, maybe should retire, instead fighting canz.
ps.we all gotta admit cro cop will be remembered as top 5 hw of all times, only fighter who last 3 hard rounds with fedor.
Chiek Kongo should no longer be allowed to fight in the Octagon, no fighter should accept a fight against him anyways.
He got Crocop in the pills twice in their fight and purposely knocked Al-Turk in the nuts. We all knew it was coming and Mazagatti should've deducted a point. When Kongo can't win he low blows a guy. He is the Andrew Golota of MMA, a cheap fighter that open palms to the eyes and low blows.
"C'mon, Mirko! Catch that chicken! You're gonna' get speed! Speed! You're gonna be able to eat lightning and crap thundah!"
"But Stankie, the chicken just flew into my crotch! He pecked at my balls, and now they've got back inside me...AGAIN!"
"You're a BUM, Mirko! A BUM! Where are my sardines?"
Great time to come back, with the heavyweight division hotting up.
I think he can be a good link between the upcoming stars (Cigano, Valasquez, Carwin), and the four who just competed in the mini-tournament.
He could also be a good test for Kongo prior to a title shot, or how’s about a rematch with Nogueira?
Mirko vs Randy
Mirko vs Chuck
Mirko vs any of the young HW fighters
So even if he isnt the killer he once was the UFC still has some good fights it could put on.
Cain Valasquez and Shane Carwin need wins over a top named guy....beating Cro cop can do that for both....or let Big Nog beat him so he's back on his way to the top.
If anything, cro cop is a force again.
