Union in Labor Dispute With Fertitta-Owned Station Casinos Launches Formal Antitrust Complaint With FTC About Zuffa

(Apparently, you don’t f*ck with a union spurned.)

Culinary Workers Union Local 226 — the group that is battling Station Casinos to unionize its hotel and casino workers — launched a new salvo against the casino’s owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, who also own a majority stake in the UFC and Strikeforce yesterday by firing off a letter of complaint to Federal Trade Commission Director Richard Feinstein in which they request that the FTC launch an investigation against Zuffa for what they deem as “a violation of anti-trust laws.”

According to the complaint, sent to CagePotato.com today by the union, Zuffa’s practices of buying out the competition like they did with PRIDE, the WEC, WFA and Strikeforce, their institution of champion’s clauses, automatic contract renewal clauses and guaranteed first negotiation periods in fighters’ contracts, their control of fighter image and likeness rights in perpetuity and their refusal to co-promote all put artificial restraints on athlete movement, depress pay and stifle competition.

It’s worth noting that this is the same union that financially supported Bob Reilly’s re-election campaign in New York and who has been feeding the oblivious State Assemblyman lines about the Fertittas and Zuffa being sinister entities. There’s a pretty good chance they are angling at getting the FTC to force the sport to adopt a fighters union as well, but time will tell.

The CWU, who are a branch of the Unite Here group of unions that represent hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, and airport workers in the U.S. and Canada, are asking that the FTC begin a thorough investigation into Zuffa’s contravention of the FTC Act which “prohibits unfair methods of competition in or affecting commerce.”

The funny thing is, the FTC has already been investigating the UFC and Strikeforce parent company, and not surprisingly, the claim of a monopoly and of anti-trust violation has been vehemently denied by UFC president Dana White.

We’ll have to wait and see if the results of the FTC probe are made public and if they find any wrongdoing on the part of Zuffa.

I love shopping at Fresh & Easy and Walmart. No unions and savings are passed down to me. :)

Fucking terrence, you've let me down. There are big fucking Federal Laws that are in place and have been operative for well over 100 years.

I usually reserve the grades for the Karma type contributors and the editors, but you got today's "D-" bro.

..and there is the chink in the amour the UFC is breaking federal employment laws, few here understand. The fighters don't get paid tons of cash, yet they perform nearly every-time as they prepare for a fight and step into the UFC cage. That's true of most all fighters inside most all organizations.

..Good for you, for taking the time to watermark the document, it's big news. Maybe this will find it's way to networked news. Outside all the trash talking on Cage Potato, I hope we get updated when more detail is forthcoming.

@Drinks2Much
..I worked for a union for quite some time. I can't say there is zero mismanagement or sometimes even direct collaboration from the jerk-offs who manage some unions and the companies served, but the standard of living is much better. Regardless of one's feelings about unions, they do distribute the wealth throughout the middle class. Something that is not happening today.
.
Nearly every single government official, employee, or subcontractor that does business with the same is in a union, yet people seem to think they are bad for the journey man and master of skilled labor? They must have forgotten what country they live in.
.
.
The Federal government via the Culinary Union (of all places) now has Zuffa's corrupt number - they managed to keep their unscrupulous dealings hidden for nearly a decade. I suppose in the case of some of the faked-up UFC fights, maybe it should be the Screen Actors Guild who ought to get involved? GRIN

You're a bigoted dumbass terrence. Really? "Defending freak transgenders"? You mean defending people with the same rights you have? What a piece of shit you are.

Billionaires trying to hoover up all the money they possibly can is why jobs go overseas. You think without unions they'd pay workers here $8 an hour when they can pay kids in some 3rd world shithole to do it for 50 cents a week with no benefits? You want to fix jobs going overseas charge these so-called American companies international trade tariffs for goods they manufacture overseas. I say you don't get to be an American company if you have your calls answered in India, your goods manufactured in Taiwan and your assets hidden away in the Cayman islands.

Unions are groups of workers banding together to protect their mutual interest from the greedy corporations who will stop at nothing to strip those rights away. You're handing them the keys to the kingdom when you don't realize how vitally important unions are to the very existence of a middle class. Yes, they bargain for job security, and for health benefits, and better pay, safer working conditions. Why have the wages of the American worker remained stagnant since the 70s while the income of the average CEO has skyrocketed to over 500 times what his average employee makes? Because of the weakening of the unions by dumb shits like you with no understanding of history. They love it when the middle class fights amongst itself, union versus non-union, public versus private unions, white versus black, middle class versus poor. The only thing they fear is people united, which is why they fear unions.
terrence- September 2, 2011 at 12:08 am
LOL sho nuff your name says it all. You act as if the unions are fighting for those very same things that are in the past such as child labor. No, now they are fighting for two year tenure for teachers, higher wages for even less work than they do now with ridiculous benefits and defending freak transgenders in the workplace......also, unions are the reason jobs are sent overseas u dumb fa g.....go to school and learn something.
Sho Nuff- September 1, 2011 at 9:57 pm
You fucking idiots with your anti-union bullshit. Every time you're not working the weekend and get to enjoy the UFC on a Saturday night and recover on a work-free Sunday, or when you're chilling at the beach on your paid vacation, or utilizing your health benefits, or enjoying overtime pay, sick leave, paid leave, safe working conditions, or the fact that you haven't been working since you were 5 years old, thank a fucking union. Workers fought to form unions and fought to secure each and every on of these rights for all of us. Disrespecting the workers who fought, bled, and died for those rights is every bit as bad as disrespecting a soldier. Go suck on a billionaire's cock, maybe he'll give you $50 and won't ship your job overseas, you anti-American fucktards.

Drinks is completely right, especially the middle class part... otherwise all the money is in the hands of a very few elite. Imbalance of wealth in this country is what is destroying the economy!

Did you happen to see Titus's latest standup comedy special called Neverlution? He made a pretty good rant about that very same topic.
DarthTech- September 1, 2011 at 5:01 pm
There was a time when unions did good, but today they do nothing but protect the stupid, lazy, and old. Oh yeah, they manage to drive businesses and jobs overseas as well.
Drinks2Much- September 1, 2011 at 3:53 pm
IBEW local#728 skilled labor all the way. i am a 5th year apprentice and very proud of the fact that i am a union member. i am in no way lazy, and have the utmost pride in the work i produce. there is a stigma that unions are affiliated with the mob or that they strongarm employers into making unreasonable demands. . . . that is simply not the case. because of unions we have fair work practices, 40 hour work weeks, weekends off to spend time with our families, AND A MIDDLE CLASS ! ! !
unonutoB- September 1, 2011 at 2:58 pm
just ranting
Badger- September 1, 2011 at 2:46 pm
@unonutoB

I don't follow your distinction between skilled and unskilled in regard to being lazy.
RwilsonR- September 1, 2011 at 2:40 pm
Ahh, legalized racketeering. Fuck unions!
unonutoB- September 1, 2011 at 2:01 pm
The point your missing with road construction is that they are not what is considered skilled labor. I could go get a job today working road construction. I work as a union electrician and have never considerrd my job easy. I get paid more because I went to shool for four years and then went through a five year apprentice program.
Badger- September 1, 2011 at 1:37 pm
@expectjesus

I worked road construction for 9 years and successfully dodged the union reps when they would show up on the job, I too hate unions. I agree with your entire rant, except for the part about *union* road workers being lazy. Next time you see a bunch of dudes standing around watching one guy work, really look for a company logo on their trucks or equipment (pause), I guarantee that 8 out of 10 times, there will be no logo other than the state, county, or city seal. What you are seeing is lazy government employees, not lazy union employees. I have friends who quit working for contractors for government jobs, only to come back to their old jobs because they couldn't handle feeling so wasteful. Everything else you said was valid, though.
El Guapo- September 1, 2011 at 12:35 pm
If ever they form a "Sammich Makers of America Union" I'mma have to slap a ho..
Sloppyspray- September 1, 2011 at 12:21 pm
Agree with Terrence and ExpectJesusBro, except for the part about "this generation" considering I feel like most union workers I see are old people who can't do their job anymore but want to keep it regardless.
ExpectJesusBro- September 1, 2011 at 12:16 pm
@ union workers that will never read this rant:
-
I DO NOT agree with unions. For a fee, they get the worker better pay (convienently upping their pay by doing this) for doing nothing but paying the union. It makes for lazy workers, shitty production value, and poor business practices. This is simalar to the "every kid gets a trophy" that has begun in youngster athetic sports. They don't even keep score anymore in my sons football league. I'm a firm believer that healthy compitition makes a person stronger, win or lose... if you want to be number one, you will push yourself harder to get there... If you want better pay, push yourself, better yourself for the company, offer to learn other positions, go to college to earn a better degree, kiss some bosses ass, there's a million ways, find one that works for you. I'm getting pretty tired of this generation that feels it's entitled to everything...
.
Ever noticed the road workers that are union pay? 1 working, 3 supervising, bull shit.
Fried Taco- September 1, 2011 at 12:09 pm
I was hoping they actually sent the letter to the FTC like that. I would be cool.

terrence- September 1, 2011 at 11:53 am
freakin unions.....I've worked with several union employees in the construction business and it is just pathetic....get paid tons of cash to do their easy job poorly. Will be the downfall of this Country
