Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Damn It, Bob Reilly is an Evil Oblivious Bastard

We know from experience that dealing with government types is shady business, but when idiots like Bob Reilly continue to distort the truth and screw with the livelihoods of countless people in the process, it starts to grate on our nerves.

Reilly was front and centre in the news today telling anyone who would listen that, like he’s been saying for weeks, the MMA legalization bill in New York likely won’t make it to the Assembly floor for a vote because there isn’t enough interest or support for the bill.

“If something does not have the votes to pass, we don’t bother taking it to the floor,” Reilly said.

So rather than prove there isn’t any underhandedness in deciding whether or not there really isn’t enough support for the bill by putting the issue to a vote, the opposition Democrats like Reilly and Speaker Sheldon Silver are likely to stall the bill in the Assembly’s Ways & Means Committee. That kids, is how a bill doesn’t become a law.

The bill didn’t even make it onto the Committee’s agenda Thursday, and with time quickly running out for the current session, Reilly is probably high-fiving his cronies as he waits for the inevitable to occur. If the bill isn’t voted on by Monday, it’s another year without MMA in the Empire State.

“All we want up here is a vote,” said Marc Ratner, the UFC’s Vice President of Governmental and Legislative Affairs. “We want it to get to the floor, and let the members vote on it.”

According to the bill’s sponsor, Democrat Assemblyman Steve Englebright, legalizing the sport will mean an economic boom for the State.

“The state is missing out on the revenue which we could use for many other things that we need this year, such as funding for our schools, universities, libraries,”  Englebright explained.

Reilly, of course, puts a different spin on it.

“We are trying to eradicate violence in this state, not approve it,” said Reilly. “This is very harmful to the fighters, this is not going to bring money into the state.”

Next on Reilly’s agenda will be having movies, television, video games, hunting, boxing, hockey, football and pro-wrestling banned from New York.

I emailed Bob Reilly this week in an attempt to root out his motives for being a staunch opponent of MMA. We had an interesting back-and-forth and he was kind enough to respond.

However, in his response, he attacks (inaccurately) some of my facts and ended the exchange by saying, "UFC provides a substantial monetary award for the 'best' KO of the event. To think that 'the best KO' is safe simply exemplifies the degree to which we disagree."

He was respectful enough, and I appreciated his time, however, I would have liked to hear what, in particular, he felt was so wrong with MMA that it didn't deserve to be sanctioned or compared to boxing.

Don't forget to add banning rodeo to the list. That's non-consensual animal competition, what's next? Crack head wrangling? Pigeon punching? But really, humans doing things like that strikes as far more violent and brutal than two individuals making a choice to fight for dollars.

Man... I knew Reilly was way off on his MMA perspective... but to see this video and have it reavealed that HE REPRESENTS MY ORIGINAL HOMETOWN was equal parts embarrassing and shameful. Ya know, this is truly odd, though. Generally, when a politician doesn't make much of any sense on an issue, it's because certain corporate entities stand to profit greatly via the ridiculous stance the politician is taking. I really can't see who wins by not allowing MMA. It's not like there were unprecedented leaps in violence in society when pro boxing or kids taking karate became more popular. Its cute that he thinks its "unsafe for the fighters." If a man burns down his own house, he is not charged with arson.... even if it WAS unsafe, a person has a right to engage in dangerous stuff if they want.

yeah i'm sure a cagepotato commenter emailing him is going to change his mind.

who cares anymore? New york had their chance and flubbed, it come back to Australia or somewhere that wants ya. UFC isn't even going back to the uk/europe again this year anyway. I'm not an american so i just dont get how this is a big deal. New yorkers can still buy the fights or fly to them, you have various states in america if i'm not mistaken, lets just forget about this so i dont have to read about it every day, bob reilly makes me angry

Sent this to Assemblyman Reilly's contact me page I dont think it will help, but what harm can it do. Better than calling him a douche and it giong nowhere.

Mr. Assemblyman Reilly and staff screeners,
Thank you for taking the time to read this form letter. I am aware of your opposition of the legalization and regulation of Mixed Martial Arts. I was opposed to it in my state(Indiana) as well, even though I am a fighter. Since it's regulation has taken place, however MMA has become more respected and safer for everyone involved. The fighters are required to get blood screenings and must have physicals performed by an actual physician. The referees have to be trained and pass a certification courses that allow them to see when a fight needs to be called for safety reasons. The state has made money off of the promotions, fighters, ect. due to the need to have a license. The police have authorized overtime giving them larger paychecks, I must add that there have been no incidences in my area due to mma. I understand your dislike of the sport, I ask that you not neglect your voting public. No, MMA is not for everyone, but why shouldn't the ones it is for have every oportunity to practice and show their trade in a safe regulated atmosphere. Thank you for your time.

Bobby has a cause and a homo-erotic fantasy that MMA makes him very aware of on election years. Look at the bastard, he looks like he craves cock worse than a blogger protecting the drag queen leader maggie hendricks.

Im sick of hearing and reading about this. If the people of NY want MMA so bad they would vote him out and vote in someone who would approve. Its just as easy to drive out to Jersey or up to PA. Pollatics is a farce anyway and to be succesful at it you either need to have charisma or a cause. Guess which one Bobby has?
