Dana White Is Not Amused By “The Simpsons” MMA Show, But What Did He Expect?

(For the sake of perspective, let's recall how "The Simpsons" has portrayed the boxing world in the past.)

Here’s a newsflash for you.  Remember that MMA-themed episode of “The Simpsons” that we were pleasantly surprised with, if only because it wasn’t as hackneyed and completely unfunny as every episode of the show for the last six or seven years has been?  Well, UFC president Dana White wasn’t laughing, and not just because he lacks the ability to find anything funny if it doesn’t involve someone getting shocked:

"I was disappointed," White says. "I think it was typical of people that don't know anything about the sport. I know it's for fun, but the second half of it really wasn't even funny. …We like fighting.  But to make it sound like the UFC crowd is this bloodthirsty crowd that shows up and just want to see people get their (butts) kicked — that's not true. That's the stigma that the mainstream has of us. … The Simpsons program will show you how mainstream we're not.”

While it’s hard to argue with DW when he says that the portrayal of MMA and its fans on a cartoon comedy was a little reductive and not 100% accurate, it seems like he’s missing the point.  This is an over-the-top attempt at satire.  When “The Simpsons” does shows on anything – even mainstream sports like football or baseball – accurate representation is not the goal.  For instance, there's this:

Obviously there’s no kids’ cartoon out there that’s actually like “Itchy & Scratchy.”  If there were, then “Itchy & Scratchy” wouldn’t be funny in the world of “The Simpsons,” where the volume on everything is turned up to the point of being absurd.  Think about how ridiculous it would sound if the producers of “Tom & Jerry” complained about it.  Why, we might go so far as to call them hyper-sensitive pussies.

Of course the version of MMA portrayed in a cartoon is not going to mirror the version we love.  And of course those of us who love it and have become protective of it might already be a little sensitive to anything resembling negative press.  But the fact that MMA is enough of a part of America’s social fabric to be lampooned on “The Simpsons” – tired and half-assed as that show has become in recent years – that should be taken as a good sign.  MMA is officially popular enough to be mocked on a large scale.  That's how you know you've arrived, DW.

Itchy and Scratchy should be renamed Silva and griffin

they really should rename it that. also, i kinda of imagine that every sunday rich franklin sends forrest griffin a little slice of humble pie and a thank you card for taking all the shame fame off him for awhile by getting KTFO by anderson silva.

In a real MMA Fight between Itchy and Scratchy, The RSPCA would come down on Dana like a ton of bricks.

The resemblance between Homer Simpson and Butterbean is astonishing.

Someone takes themselves a bit too seriously. It's a fucking cartoon. Lighten up, Francis.

Dana White is just being overprotective of what he considers his baby; just like the parents who get all bent out of shape when you refer to their kid with the helmet and the drool bib as anything other than "special".

umm.. obviously if the episode presented an ACCURATE portrayal of mma and its fans, it wouldnt have been funny!!!

no way in hell DW would ever say "butts" this is a guy who in an average sentence uses the F-word as the subject, the predicate, the conjunction, and the punctuation.

DW was definitely being over-serious (he should have rolled with the joke a bit more), though it is his job to be the straight-man who stands up for the sport -- like a dad who protects his slutty daughter from all those bad men who are taking advantage of her.

Dana White may be a lot of things, and respected should definitely one of them.. in terms of him moving the sport forward in a positive way. The things that he took issue are rooted public's misconceptions about MMA. Sure, one can say that it's just good ol' Simpsons satire, and take solace in the fact that MMA actually inspired humor out of its writers for the first time since 02.. but being that people are stupid, and believe whatever TV tells them to, it makes people think that MMA in 2009 is what it was in 1993. You know, the good old days. When you can punch Random Task in the junk until his nuts turn into sand. Dana doesn't appreciate people denigrating something that's so important to him by saying things aren't actually true... it's kinda like calling someone a faggot when they're not even necessarily gay. Wait, what? And so you all know.. if I'm not filtering for content, don't expect me to be proofreading this mess!

Fucking priceless.

All he's saying is that if they wanted to portray MMA in a funny way, they could've just had Kimbo knocking out submitting Lesnar to win the championship.

Dana White is a piece a shit.

"But to make it sound like the UFC crowd is this bloodthirsty crowd that shows up and just want to see people get their (butts) kicked — that's not true."

Right, Dana. Most UFC fans are actually engineers and scientists and librarians who listen to Beethoven in their eco-friendly cars on the way to the arena.

Everyone not saying Dana White overreacted have no sense of humor and should stop being over sensitve pussies.
