Dana White Puts Brandon Vera on Notice

(‘Yeah, real cute. Now please knock someone out.’)

When it comes to fighters facing win-or-get-fired matches, no one loves to speculate as to who might be on the hot seat more than we do. But rarely does Dana White make it this easy. Speaking with the Canadian Press, White called into question Brandon Vera‘s motivation as a fighter and said in no uncertain terms that he needs to see the old “Truth” back in the Octagon:

“As soon as he had a few wins and all the money got involved and his new contract and his ex-manager and all that bullshit, he’s changed,” White lamented. “He’s not the same fighter he was. He needs to put all that shit behind him and he’s needs to come back and be the cocky, crazy Brandon Vera that I met a few years ago. That kid needs to come back.

“It seems that now the money’s involved, he doesn’t take chances like he used to, he doesn’t let his hands go like he used to. He’s got to come back and be the old Brandon Vera.”

That’s not what you want to hear from your boss a couple days before a big fight against someone as tough as Keith Jardine. So would White really consider cutting Vera is he loses at UFC 89? Naw, son. With the UFC looking to expand into the Phillipines, Vera’s too valuable right now. Plus he’s earned a little leeway. He’ll get at least a couple more chances to fuck up, but the message ought to be very clear nonetheless.

White wants the explosive, shit-talking Vera. The cautious, grind-out-a-boring-decision Vera? They’re all stocked up in the light heavyweight division. After all, they’ve already got one Lyoto Machida.

Ape you dumbass, it's KEITH Hackney. And he was absolutely nothing like Machida. They don't even train in the same style of karate. Wow, you're such an amazing MMA fan with your stunning knowledge.

Only n00bs fire off the "You aren't an MMA fan unless you pretend like Machida is fun to watch." They'll repeat whatever Joe Rogan tells them. "ELUSIVE!"

I like how the chick in the pic is looking the opposite way than what Vera is pointing. Oh wait, blonde, that explains it.

Machida almost got triangled at the end of his fight by Tito Freakin' Ortiz. I wonder what people would be saying if he had tapped. And no, genius, you don't have to like Machida to be a "True MMA fan".

True MMA fans like Machida.

BJJ Black belt and has one of the most unusual standup games only seen by the likes of Heath Hackney and Genki Sudo.

War Machida, he made tito look like an idiot

I think the Lyota Machida comment was uncalled for, I thought you guys who write about this stuff day in and day out would realise a good fighter when you see one and not get into the typical fighter bashing you see on the forums, I guess not....see you on Sherdog guys!!

i like machida and vera -- they're both technically savvy... yeah -- maybe not super exciting, but watching their fights is like watching a really fast grandmaster chess match where the grandmasters get to punch each other.

lol dont hate on machida hes the man. is he explosive and exciting? not at all hahhahaha but hes a good fighter, but maybe not the money making, shit talking, show promoter dana wants him to be. he fights for the sport, not for the money or fame. respectable to say the least.

I find Machida to be a very exciting fighter. Why? Because he completely destroys the MMA-as-usual paradigm. He's systematically running through the entire division, embarrassing everybody else as he goes along. He will be LHW champion within a year-and-a-half.

Machida makes Kaleb Starnes look agressive.

Geez in that pic Vera and Dana White almost look like identical twins. About the only difference is the darker skin.

I would hardly call Machida boring. The way he made Tito look like a bad amateur should be the highlight of all your Tito hating lives.

Is Vera doing the Usain Bolt dance in that pic?
geoff- October 15, 2008 at 9:26 pm
u can almost see the money being transfered from vera to dana in this pic..
on a different note, i think it's almost time to update those power rankings!
