Dana White Responds to Tom Atencio’s Fight Challenge by Calling Him a Loser

(They should have used a safe word. Photo courtesy of CombatLifestyle.)

Just because Tom Atencio wants to give up a couple weight classes and fight Dana White doesn’t mean it’ll actually happen. Quote of the day, via Kevin Iole:

"If I were him, I’d want to fight me, too," White said. "I’m the guy who is killing all of his hopes and dreams…Why would I fight this goof? He’s neither a fighter nor a promoter. He’s a [expletive] loser. That’s all he is. Let me tell you something: When I was $44 million in the hole, the last thing I was doing was leaving the office and going out to train for a joke of a fight. I was in the office and trying to find a way to make this thing work. Why would I waste one second of my second of my day worrying about this [expletive] guy? He should be worried about the millions and millions of his bosses, or his partners’ money, whoever it is, that’s he’s burning. That’s a complete joke."

Ouch. A simple "no thanks" would have covered it. And I wouldn’t call Atencio’s upcoming scrap against Randy Hedderick "a joke of a fight" — he just has a lot of downtime in his position as Affliction’s MMA promoter, considering the company never puts on events, so he can afford to pursue fighting on the side. But Tom has no reason to cry over a rejected offer from Dana when he has another juicy one waiting for him. Just as a fight between Atencio and White would have been a nice little publicity stunt for Affliction, another t-shirt guy is now trying to ride on Tom’s coat-tails. Here’s an excerpt from an interview that FiveOuncesofPain just did with Ranger Up‘s Nick Palmisciano:

FiveOuncesOfPain.com: Why do you want to fight Atencio?

Nick:
Well, I feel like this is the next logical progression in my fighting career. I currently have a professional record of 0-0, and I feel like a big win over Atencio would really send a signal to the major promotions that I am not just the owner of a t-shirt company, but actually a world class athlete.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com:
Some would say this is just a media ploy to highlight your brand. What would you say to those people?

Nick:
This has absolutely nothing to do with Ranger Up. That’s R-A-N-G-E-R-U-P dot com. This is purely about my career as a professional fighter, not about selling more t-shirts at RangerUp.com. It’s like when we hire hot girls to model our clothes at RangerUp.com—that’s not about selling t-shirts at RangerUp.com, either.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com:
This really comes as somewhat of a surprise to a lot of people. We didn’t even know you fought…or for that matter that you existed. How long have you been training?

Nick:
What time is it?

And so on. You can learn about Tom Atencio’s current training regiment in this Sherdog interview, where he also reveals that the third Affliction event is being put together right now (July or August TBA), but no other details have been made public at this point.

Get him. Nice Dana. Nice. Though I guarantee that White wants to fight him. He just doesnt want Tom winning. Only way to avoid that is if there is no fight.

"They should have used a safe word." LOL! After reading Dana's tirade...yeah, I kinda agree with him. Atencio needs to quit screwing around and either put on fights or sell T-shirts. Right now, he's not doing as much of either as he did 1 year ago. Ranger Up's Nick Palmisciano is my new whoring-self-promoting idol! Actually, Ranger Up has some pretty cool shirts. Something besides skulls and stuff. I love their "derka, derka, derka" shirt.

"When I was $44 million in the hole,"....... So now it was Dana that put up the $44 million? and here I was thinking that the Ferretti brothers had put up the money but I guess they are just bullsh@t artists from the company that Dana White funded.

yah im telling you let the fighters be fighters and promoters be promoters. Dana White is a loud mouthed douche bag who likes the attention but he's at the top. Why should he worrie about the t-shirt guy? Who the hell would really want to see that fight? Ok i kinda would want to but only cuse its fucking rediculous and a total circus show but no one would consider this a fight between two skilled atheletes. Whatever, good luck Tom on getting your next event together.

How can you not agree with Dana, he is bang on. And Atencio knows damn well if he got a fight with Dana it would be one big advertisment for AFFLICTION. Fuck Atencio, clown.

God damn those rangerup shirts are awful. I would take out a 2nd mortgage on my home and purchase an affliction tshirt before accepting one of those things for free.

Fuck. No matter how you slice it, if you challenge Dana to a fight, you'll look like a loser without the pleasure of even punching him in the face.

Dana has spent so much time with his head up his own ass, he is starting to enjoy the taste of his own shit. Can't wait for the Fertitta's to get a new front man for their Asian "takeover", which will probably not happen now that Art Of War Fighting Championships has the backing of forces far more powerful and influential than those uninitiated Fertitta Mob Holdovers.

I wanted an Affliction GSP t-shirt badly but at around £50 not that badly. And I'm guessing with Affliction bleeding money the t's will soon be even more expensive. Maybe Attentico thinks he needs a rub from this crazy GM pro-wrestlin-esque match to get his company noticed.

Dana White has a point but he's still not a fighter. The industry really does need to move to being owned and ran by fighters for fighters.
