It’s the week of UFC 106, but coming off a trip across the pond for last weekend’s show, Dana White doesn’t feel like he has enough material for a new video blog. Fortunately for him, his personal videographer never uploaded the fight night footage from UFC 104 in Los Angeles, so why not just put that on the internet and call it good? Things are going smoothly at first. DW presses the flesh with some celebrities, talks to some fighters in the locker rooms, passes by ace interviewer and hopelessly unfashionable friend of the Potato Ariel Helwani (is that a flannel shirt? is it 1994?) at the 5:15 mark. But when he watches refereee Steve Mazzagatti’s oddly-timed stoppage in the Cain Velasquez-Ben Rothwell fight, that’s when White loses his cool just a bit.
"Mazzagatti will fuck up any fight," White says directly into the camera. "The worst referee in the history of fighting. Period. I don’t care if there was a fight back in the old days, okay, the Stone Age. Mazzagatti is the worst referee ever. The guy has no business watching mixed martial arts, let alone refereeing it."
White then visited both Velasquez and Rothwell to make sure they both knew what a terrible referee Mazzagatti was, and after that he presumably called Mazzagatti’s children to let them know that their father is a failure. That part must have been edited out.
This isn’t the first time that White has criticized Mazzagatti’s refereeing skills, or even the first time he called for Mazzagatti to be banned from even watching MMA. Though, to the best of my knowledge, it is the first time he compared him to the notoriously unpredictable and slow-to-react judges of the Stone Age and still arrived at the conclusion that Mazzagatti is the worst. Not that he doesn’t have a point. The guy has repeatedly made bad decisions in the cage, and when you discount refs who have only worked one or two shows (looking at you, "Regional" Donnie Jessup), Mazzagatti is the one UFC regular who’s been roundly voted ‘Most Likely to Screw Up Big Time.’
The sad irony here is that, as powerfully and publicly as Dana White has hated on Mazzagatti, he still lets "Big" John McCarthy sit on the shelf. At some point you’d think it’d be worth it to put the beef behind them and get one of the best refs in the business back to work. I mean, politics aside, McCarthy smokes those Stone Age guys, and he’s better than half the dudes in the Old Testament, too. And Hammurabi? Child, please.

Do NOT read MMAJunkie. Ever. If rogue hyphenation bothers you in the smart, unilaterally dap-worthy writing of CP, the sort of red crayon illiterate bullshit that gets posted on MMAJunkie could very well make your head explode. Lyoto Machida should be giving those writers tips on English, with Matt Hamill proofreading out loud.
Cage Potato does a great job at what they do, and I'm only trying to help. I hope I made that clear. Any time you make suggestions about someone's writing it can be taken in the wrong way. I trust the Bens took my suggestion in the spirit in which I gave it, because I can tell they care about writing well.
Such a well dressed dude, props.
While Yves lavine may have made some screw ups, I think he's still well behind Mazagatti in the league table of referee fuck ups. Can they not fire the man? He just seems to keep coming back no matter now may people criticise his performance.
The Code of Hammurabi:
278: If any one buy a male or female slave, and before a month has elapsed the benu-disease be developed, he shall return the slave to the seller, and receive the money which he had paid.
The Code of Hammurabi:
5: If a judge try a case, reach a decision, and present his judgment in writing; if later error shall appear in his decision, and it be through his own fault, then he shall pay twelve times the fine set by him in the case, and he shall be publicly removed from the judge's bench, and never again shall he sit there to render judgement.
"The writing at all the other MMA sites doesn't even come close to the writing here."
Absolutely. I don't often agree with the Bens, but their writing is always good. They're the reason I frequent this site.
"Now let the insults fly (toward me)."
Quite the contrary. I'm glad to know I'm not the only grammarian who posts here. Keep up the fine work.
Anyway, I realize the actual topic of this thread is Mr. White's latest video blog. However, I'm not going to spend ten minutes watching P. T. Barnum, Jr. curse and complain. Dana needs to work off some of that aggression on the treadmill.
You say the "oddly-timed stoppage" hyphen is unnecessary, and yet you call it an "adverb-adjective modifier", a reference which, itself, has a hyphen.
How can you live with your own hypocrasy?
Unless, of course, there is such a thing as an "adverb modifier", in which case WHO GIVES A FUCK?
I would never say anything if you simply left out a hyphen. But since you affirmatively chose to use one, you're probably interested in this sort of nerdy thing.
Now let the insults fly (toward me).
#15...
"Should one man bare official witness to a match of prowess between two shorn-headed men rolling around like sodomites and make a ruling deemed unsatisfactory by the public, he shall be put to death."
The sentiment is a bit out-dated, but Mazzagatti, you got it easy, my man.
Smackdaddiest, yeah, that fucker too!
Why bring Bisping into all of this?
Yeah Mazz sucks
in their video game?!
