Goddamn, that was one of the most lackluster fights I've ever seen since Arlovski-Sylvia 3. I understand where a lot of these people are coming from about how Silva wasn't about to go get hurt and how Leites was the challenger that wasn't doing any sort of challenging. But, I also think that Anderson had PLENTY of chances to just pound Leites and come out with minimal damage, if any at all. I think a champion deserves every right to defend and not have to just try to destroy the opponent, but come the fuck on. Be entertaining. I'm blown away by any criticism Silva is taking on this one. As soon as he realized Leites was going to "flop guard" everytime there was an exchange, he went after him even harder. He tried to embarass Leites out of his strategy in order to make the fight happen. Every time Leites flopped he stood over him with his hands on his hips shaking his head. He punched the man in the foot for God's sake. Thiago conceded the match in the second and decided that he would try and save face by not being knocked out. If Thiago had acted like a proper underdog (in the biggest fight of his career) and stood in there swinging for the fence then he would have been knocked out cold. But that's what he should have done. He should face the same scorn heaped on Kalib Starnes.

I don't think the boos coming from the Bell Centre was wrong, contrary to what Joe Rogan thinks. Every sport has their casual fans, and hardcore fans. I seem what you mean and I like your argument re last week prepping for the championship game.

I guess I can say that it's still the same as the last quarter of a championship game when a team runs the clock. Silva is well aware that he was ahead and shouldn't have risked anything beyond what he felt was required. In regards to which is the safer method... I also can see it your way regarding a fast ending would be less risky... however if he felt keeping distance was safer avenue then that's how he avoided injury. Perhaps he thought in rushing in he would be caught by a quick shot or taken down so he was more comfortable keep Leites in a distance where he had the reach advantage.

Again I'm not promoting this style and technique however if it works then I'd still appreciate his efforts. I am a big If he had ran into the 5th round and got caught by a quick KO punch we'd be calling him stupid today instead of booing his fight.

At the end of the day I just think that his job was to retain the title and that's what he did. Leites' job was to take the title and he fell short. I can totally understand why people are upset... but just think it's a bit overboard =)

Landon, I have to disagree. Making quick work of the other fellow is a better way of avoiding injury. Kicking and punching the other guy's feet, knees, and shins for five rounds leaves you open to greater risk of injury. Also, last night can't be compared to week 17 of the NFL. Last night WAS the championship. Football teams rest players BEFORE making a championship run.

It's not Silva's job to determine how much he wants to fight whoever he's facing. He was the headliner of another sellout [record] pay-per-view and should be ashamed of yet another piss poor performance. He gets paid to fight, so fight. Where the fuck was the CHALLENGE?

Silva can come out and do a juggling act while singing "She'll be coming around the mountain" if he wants. If his opponents can't beat Silva when he is goofing off, then that says something about his opponents. At this point Silva is just making his own challenges, like taking a fight to the 5th round. You won't see him be serious until a serious opponent steps up to the plate.

This does give me more respect for James Irvin. Sure Silva put his fist through Irvins head, but Irvin was not in the least bit a bitch.

You can't really blame Leites until the later rounds. His striking was out-classed and had no way to get Silva where he wanted. The frustrating thing was that he kept trying that flop stuff when he knew it wouldn't work. If anything it just pissed Silva off, who then kinda spazzed and started doing random stuff. Just because he was a challenger doesn't mean he should just throw himself in there and get destroyed. I do think however by the 4th round, he should've taken more chances and changed his strategy up.

It just goes to show that it really helps to be proficient in judo or wrestling in MMA, especially if your specialty requires you to be on the ground.

While Machida uses the same intelligent fighting, his striking is way more refined than Leites. I wouldn't be surprised if the Evans/Machida match had it's slow moments when both fighters just evade. I do think if he's pressed to strike he can actually do something though.

OK, so my hung over and disappointed ass has been knocking Silva all morning (not a morning person). The arguments in his favor have a lot of merit, and Leites was acting too timid.

But at the same time, like Ample said, there were plenty of times that Anderson could have engaged and didn't. Sure, you gotta beat the champ, but he was acting like a bully. A lot of people see his post fight humble act and when you combine that with the hype train, people seem oblivious to his bad attitude. He wanted to counter, Leites wanted find an opening to get takedowns.

They both shoulda manned up. Silva could have at least threw more punches (not at feet or legs), even if it just meant Leites went to his butt. If Anderson would have kept landing, and Leites still falling, there would be less fingers pointed at the champ.

Okay, I know some of you will flame me for this but it has to be said: Leites makes BJJ look really lame. When a "world class" wrestler wants to take a fight to the ground, they take the other guy down (or at least try). But when a "world class" BJJ grapler wants to take the fight to the ground they just flop on their ass the whole fight (maybe even but scoot ala Lister style). BJJ can be so much more useful than how Leites made it look.

That was a garbage bag of a fight. Silva and Leites both fought smart fights, they fought not to lose. Leites carpet impersonation was due to the fact he had no chance on his feet and he hoped by the grace of God Silva would decide to lay down into a triangle or something. Silva wanted nothing to do with his guard so he decided to improv new limb strikes for five rounds. They both seemed intent on not getting caught. Smart, but it led to a shit fight nonetheless. (Youtube is full of shit fights, and none of them cost me $45).
I guarantee Franklin, Henderson, and the rest of Silva's former victims wished Silva had devolped this infight apathy years ago. Smart fight? Yes, but nothing for the P4P best to be even remotely proud of either.

Hello all of you in potato world I have several things to say about last nights fights. First lets look at the reasons why it was a good Idea for Silva not to take any dangerous risks.
1) He didnt have to. It is the responsibilty of the challenger to take his belt all he has to do is defend it.
2) Since he took virtually no damage we will see him again soon.
3) Him and GSP were going to one of Canadas famous strip clubs after the fight. He wanted to look good.

Now I would like to touch on the Liddell Shogun fight. I dont think that either one of them looked great. What I do think however is Liddell has reached his peak and is in decline, its time to hang up the gloves. Shogun however in my opinion can recover from his surgeries and be a real contender in the LHW division.

On a side note I have read through nearly all of the blogs and wanted to know. At the beggining of the fight as soon as Silva stepped in the ring I saw him wipe vaseline off of his face and then wipe it on his arms and chest. Just wanted to see if anyone else saw anything similiar.
