Dennis Hallman says that his choice of in-Octagon attire at UFC 133 was not entirely his fault. It was actually the result of a lost bet to a trio of teammates.

Although he wouldn’t disclose the subject of the wager that led to a rather unfortunate wardrobe malfunction during his fight with Brian Ebersole, he broke the news to Ariel Helwani during today’s MMA Hour of the reason why he went for the European look Saturday night.

“I won’t say what the bet was about, but I lost a bet to those guys and losing the bet meant that I got to wear some speedos,” Hallman explained to Helwani. “I thought it was funny. I thought it was embarrassing for me. Obviously, that’s why I had to do it. But I didn’t think anybody would be cross about it.”

Hallman’s boss, UFC president Dana White, who has since referred to Hallman’s skimpy bikini shorts as “disgusting,” didn’t find the humor in it. In fact, he paid Ebersole an additional $70,000 for sparing the television audience the additional torture of having to see him in the Speedos for two more rounds after he finished Hallman in the first. When asked by Helwani if he was considering firing Hallman for the stunt, White paused for a moment before answering that, if he was fired, it would be “because he lost.” Curious, considering that he is 2-1 in his latest stint with the promotion with wins over Ben Saunders and Karo Parisyan.

Hallman may be a bit too confident that The Baldfather likely won’t cut him loose for the indiscretion.

“I don’t think they’re going to fire you over something like that. I mean, he knows I went in there and fought injured because I didn’t want to screw up their card. You can’t fire somebody for doing something that’s not illegal or not wrong. You can say, don’t do it again. But it wouldn’t be right to be like, okay, you wore legal trunks but I didn’t like them so I’m going to fire you,” ‘Superman’ explained. Dana’s not like that. He might say, if you do it again I’ll fire you, but he’s not going to fire someone for wearing trunks that were legal.”
