Depressing News of the Day: Dana White Officially Kills #RallyForMarkHunt

It’s still real to us, damn it. Props to @ZeusJupiterMMAO

Pay attention, Tim Sylvia: It turns out that a Twitter campaign, no matter how popular, is not the best way to manipulate Dana White.

Even though we here at Cagepotato have known this to be true for a while, we still couldn’t help but get behind #RallyForMarkHunt. The online campaign to have “Super Samoan” fill in for Overeem at UFC 146 quickly took off among tech-savvy MMA fans, and even gained the approval of UFC color commentator Joe Rogan. For a second there, it looked as though the unlikely challenger would actually be getting a shot at ‘Cigano’; especially when Dana White announced that former champions Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez were not being considered but was silent about Mark Hunt.

Well, you can now officially stop getting your hopes up. At the post-event press conference for UFC on FUEL 2, Dana White issued the following statement about the online rally (as transcribed by

“They can keep rallying. It ain’t going to happen… I have apologized and praised Mark Hunt for what he’s accomplished in the situation he was in. And I think this fight with Struve is a good fight for him. If he beats Struve, he’ll break in and start fighting some of the top five heavyweights in the world. Anything can happen in a fight, but in all reality, it’s not fair to Mark Hunt either, to throw the guy right in there with Junior Dos Santos for a title shot. The guy worked his way up, he beats Struve, he fights somebody in the top five. I guarantee you this, he beats Struve, his next fight will be someone in the top five that can get him closer to that title shot.”

Bummer. Oh well, if Dana White’s squashing of this Twitter rally gets Tim Sylvia to stop posting videos of him attempting to work out, maybe we can take something positive out of this.

But this begs the question: Assuming that the NSAC doesn’t buy into a pre-packaged “testosterone deficiency/replacement therapy” excuse, who do you want to see fight Junior Dos Santos on such short notice? To demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt that I have learned nothing from my own article, I have started a #RallyForWerdum campaign of my own. Your thoughts, Potato Nation.

I said previously that Mark Hunt should no way get this shot. It's tough but Werdum or Velasquez rematch are the only sensible options right now. The HW division is soooo weak it’s not even funny.

What, no #RallyforBrockLesnar? It's not like he's that busy in the WWE. And he's already in 'training'.
SonOfSerbia- April 15, 2012 at 5:56 pm
They are going to find some kind of loophole in the system and have Overeem fight; so rallying for anyone is in vain...Dana will give the shot to Hendo if Overeem loses his appeal; unless Bones somehow lays waste to Rashad in under one round.

anyone that lobbyed for hunt is an idiot why would u want someone in there that stands absolute zero chance of winning.the guy isnt that good at all.there really is nobody except that piece of cheating shit overheem who also stands no chance.
alty71- April 15, 2012 at 8:39 pm
you know nothing fuck bag!! hunts always up for a war and can take a punch... also he has the power to knock anyone out! your probably one of those guys who calls mma, ufcing

Your's is the best reply. i could not find the words i was so sick and Ill over the idea of Mark getting a shot. He is fat, can't fight, and if he beats struve, watch what happens to him when he fights a top five heavyweight? He will not last one round. what do you think Cain would do to him? he would beat on him so fast, so hard, he would crumble and that would be that. Mark is good for and undercard at best. a title shot for him over cain or Mir would be more than Insane. Who ever did not agree with you, I would love to see their record on fantasy picks. i know mine are very good. It still shows me there are way to many people, teenagers maybe, that are talking without reading, or watching tape of these fighters. It's free speech so it's all fine. But, do some homework. get on these websites, cagewriter, fuel tv,, inside mma, and any other you can think of and also watch all the fights. If they do that, they will see this guy is only good for a beer commercial. The only exception i know to this rule, is Big Country. That guy is a freak of nature. got to give him props. he went three rounds with Dos Santos. By the way, Im not knocking teenagers. I have a child of my own. I'm just saying, do some reading and watch tape. This guy in a title shot would be a huge insult to fans.

Something is up and there is info that we bottom dwellars are not privy to. The UFC knows something about Reem's clearance because they would have announced a replacement by now otherwise. I just can't imagine how Reem is going to get licensed. If he isn't given the green light by the NSAC then just have JDS sit out another 6 freaking months or dig up Dan Severn to take on Cigano. This whole ordeal has gotten out of hand. Thanks Overeem u a-hole.
mmcifelli1- April 15, 2012 at 7:18 pm
Your right on the money. also, how about struve and mark hunt to head the event and have DS sit out about a year or so? the ufc is pissing me off. I have watched all this since the very first one. Im 43 years old, so respect your elders here. But do you remember back when tuf 1 came out, and the events after that? all, i mean ALL the cards were stacked. you could see liddell, randy, hughes, tito, and franklin on the aame card. i know they can't do that anymore. But the events are watered down now. and im not the only one who said it. and your comment says that. you made a joke about Dan fighting again, and DS sitting out even longer. Do you know why you said that? Because it's exactly what the UFC does. and the layoff's KILL the fighters. Jones had about five fights in 2011? he fought all the time. if they are healthy, keep them fighting. Can you imagine giving Mark Hunt a title shot? How about Tim Silvia why were at it?
Dirt- April 15, 2012 at 4:26 pm
The UFC would be stpid to announce a new contender until the issue with Alistar is resolved. That doesn't mean that there isn't one already picked ready in the waiting.
RwilsonR- April 15, 2012 at 5:57 pm
Agreed with Dirt.
Cheeseburger Eddie- April 15, 2012 at 3:41 pm
I'd like to see Hendo, he'd lose just due to the size difference but who knows what an H-Bomb would do to Cigano...
Sopapo- April 15, 2012 at 3:31 pm
I think this proves that Alistair is going to get some clearence to fight otherwise another fighter would have been announced already. Something will happen and The Reem will be cleared.
Dirt- April 15, 2012 at 4:24 pm
Thats completely untrue...

1st the UFC would never announce a Backup contender 'incase' one has issues and is unable to fight until it is official that the person can not compete.

2nd Alistar may get his clearance but it'll certainly cost the UFC some credibility having a possible champ hampered in PED allegations.
The12ozCurls- April 15, 2012 at 4:13 pm
Agreed - something is fishy
Bob Villa- April 15, 2012 at 3:26 pm
Palhares is the obvious choice.
RwilsonR- April 15, 2012 at 6:07 pm
Than you Turd for being the voice of reason in this argument. Though they'll never let Palhares have that fight for fear he'll cripple Dos Santos permanently. They've been protecting Anderson Silva from him for years now, as it is.
angry little feet- April 15, 2012 at 3:24 pm
well, it was fun while it lasted.
Darkside- April 15, 2012 at 3:15 pm
I will never rally for Werdum. All I think about when I hear his name is his flop-fest with Overoids. That being said, there isn't really anyone else off the top of my head that I'm all that excited to see right now.
RwilsonR- April 15, 2012 at 6:04 pm
I agree Werdum put on a crappy performance against Overeem, but he at least did everything he could to make up for it against Nelson. I'm not going to hold it against the guy forever if he keeps showing up like he did against Nelson.
