Disgusting Staph Infection of the Month: Kenny Florian’s Knee

That freakish-looking lump of flesh you see above is actually the knee of UFC lightweight contender Kenny Florian, who was checked into a Boston hospital yesterday with a particularly gnarly staph infection. From a report on Sherdog:

“Kenny had a bursa sac in his knee that popped and it got infected with staph,” said [Keith Florian], “and now he has to have intravenous antibiotics and a minor surgical procedure to scoop it out tomorrow.”
Florian also told Sherdog.com that doctors would test the material removed from the fighter’s knee to make sure they know what they are dealing with and to gauge the seriousness of the infection. Worries about MRSA — a particularly stringent strain of staphylococcus bacteria — are the reason for the extra measure…Florian should be released in two to three days after the regimen of antibiotics has been completed.

Barring unforeseen complications, Florian’s next Octagon appearance will be at the UFC’s tentatively scheduled Boston event in August. As for the theory that BJ Penn‘s loss at UFC 112 could fast-track Florian to another lightweight title shot, Ken-Flo is taking things as they come: "Not sure why everyone asks me what Edgar win means for me. I don’t put fights together. I’ll fight whoever UFC gives me." Besides, the UFC already seems to be laying the groundwork for Edgar/Maynard II…

Besides, Maynard is undefeated. He's beat a lot of quality guys, albeit by decisions. Diaz, Huerta, Miller, Clementi, Edgar, Siver...

KenFlo just fought for the title less than a year ago. I say give it to Maynard.

Anyway that could be more serious than he thinks. It's probably MRSA, and that's nothing to toy with. They could end up having to do more than just scoop out a little pus. It could be career-threatening.

If the UFC wants to remedy some of the blowback from the the last main event Maynard should not even be considerd for that fight. I don't think Ken Flo should get the shot just yet either being that he's a 2 time loser, even though he's an incredible fighter. Maynard V Florian for number one contender match would be good though.

Ok, on to matchmaking: Who would be next for Florian? I thought they were eyeing Florian-Maynard for August in Boston, now they want Edgar-Maynard? Who's next? Tyson Griffin (scheduled to fight at 115)? George Sotiropoulos (makes as much sense as anything, i guess)?
