DREAM Featherweight Champ Bibiano Fernandes Still Hasn’t Been Paid for DREAM 13; Turns Down September Title Defense

(“Does anybody know the name of the pawnshop Jake Shields uses?“)

Apparently DREAM has become the Michael Lohan of the MMA world.

According to TATAME, five months after he won the DREAM featherweight tournament, Bibiano Fernandes hasn’t been paid his contracted fight purse. Unlike the Impact FC fighters who haven’t been paid for their July fights by the Australian promotion, Fernandes has something over the Japanese promotion he is contracted to for one more bout: his belt.

The report says that Fernandes has turned down a title defense on the September 25 DREAM 16 card and maintains that he won’t fight for the organization until he receives his check for his win over Joachim Hansen at DREAM 13 back in March.

“Dream called me two days ago to offer me a fight at September 21, but I said I won’t fight until they pay me for my last fight,” Fernandes said. “I have family, I have a wife and I can’t work without getting paid. I’ll only fight [for DREAM] again when they pay me for my last fight.”

Fernandes joins a growing list of  fighters who have had issues with being paid by DREAM.  TATAME confirms that Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza still hasn’t been paid for his May 2009 DREAM 9 fight with Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Gary Goodridge revealed to MMAFighting earlier this month that he hasn’t receved a dime for his New Years Eve 2010 DREAM co-promoted Dynamite!! 2009 bout with Gegard Mousasi.

Say what you will about the UFC, but at least Dana takes care of his kids.

So what was the point of DREAM's recent partnership with the Chinese investment bank? It looks like the whole company is on the way out OR they're trying to purge foreign fighters from their productions.

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

This is so fugged up! They can't even afford to pay the champ of their promo. I feel Bibiano he has a family to support just like me and many other men on this site. You can do alot to a man but one thing you don't do is mess with a man's money. Bibiano just say the word and I'll send Los Zetas to collect.

They invented molotov cocktails for problems like these.

You say that like Dana is popular somewhere else.

Dana's too scared that he's going to be assassinated. His enormous, bald, white, beluga whale penis of a skull is a super easy target to train cross hairs from a rifle scope on.

When a promotion repeatedly flat out refuses to pay some of their headlining fighters, I think it's not unfair to assume the company knows that it's sailing in a sinking ship. How can anyone have confidence in a fight promotion company that doesn't even bother to pay some of their biggest draws? If this effects Dream's ability to secure big-name fighters in the future, as it probably will, will they have the wherewithal to survive considering the already shaky ground they are standing on?
To me it looks like a business acting without much belief in their own long-term stability, and given the tumultuous, desert-like climate of Japanese MMA, can anyone realistically explain how this sort of thing doesn't point in the direction of a soon-to-be bleak fate for Dream?

We need a UFC show in Japan now that I think about it. Do it like the UK shows, local headliner and broadcast free in the US.

Maybe that Wand Akiyama match that never happened?

@ Almost Polar

They're saving that for when Rampage returns.

I fully expected DREAM to be able to hold their own but the UFC has such a chokehold on the market that even in Japan its hard to stay afloat. These 2nd rate promotions pay some fighters ridiculous amounts and leave other fighters hanging and then boom their barely breaking even and now cant pay their Featherweight Champ. The only good news is the ZUFFA might be reeling in another promotions champ and add even more heat to the already boiling WEC featherweight division, watch out Aldo or Gamburyan. Maybe this was Dana's doing, DREAM sent the check its just that Dana intercepted it, What a dick move.

floppytall- August 16, 2010 at 3:25 pm
He better watch what he says or the Yakuza will send a ninja to take him out. It's only racist if it isn't true.

Who cares about the dream "belt"? Go to the WEC if you want to prove something.
