‘EA MMA’ First Look: Fedor’s Ecstatic Armbar

(Top image courtesy of via Fightlinker; for comparison, a similar shot from UFC 2009 Undisputed is underneath.)

The first gameplay image from the upcoming EA Sports MMA video game has been released, showing Fedor Emelianenko armbarring some poor, faceless opponent. Compared to the UFC joint that came before it, facial realism seems to be a priority here, though there’s something unsavory about Fedor’s expression. Basically, it’s the same expression that John Mayer gets when it’s time for his guitar solo. I don’t think Fedor has ever made that face in his life, maybe not even while in the throes of church-sanctioned marital passion. But other than that, we’re intrigued. A preview of the game will air during "Fedor vs. Rogers," November 7th on CBS.

Since EA MMA is basically EA Strikeforce, are they going to have a feature where when you select your fighter they can decide that they don't want to actually fight because they're not under an exclusivity contract so they're going to go and take fights in Japan instead, leaving you to pick your own replacement for your own originally chosen fighter? Because that would be AWESOME.

Shirt please! CP ftw.

Forrest looks much more defined than Fedor. Oh, wait, that's how he looks normally.

Well then, good job EA!

If you play as Kalib Starnes, you get to the "jogging mode"
If you play as Mark Kerr, your character will attempt a half assed kick, then fall down unconcious.
If you play as Arlovski, be careful! One hit and the glass jaw shatters.
Use Joe Son. If you can make it all the way to the ring without dropping the huge cross on your back, you qualify for "Cock Punch Mode"
Nick Diaz has the Joint Campaigns
If you even pick Josh Barnett, the Roid Virus will crash and brick your whole system, never to be played again.

you wouldnt happen to be talking about the Tony Hawk series that is coming out with a groundbreaking controller and game in a few weeks, would you? because that series is currently the opposite of stale.

@ google - that was funny. But then it made me sad, b/c it plays on a sad truth. I wish that smug, horse spunk-injecting Dutchman would just honor his commitments and come to the states soon. I hope the F-man gets that fight - in Strikeforce, not Dream, and beats the living tulips out of Overeem.

Fedor looks like hes taking a break to let out a fart. Undisputed is a pretty good game. Not perfect, but good. If EAs game is better, awesome. Except they don't have the selection of stars the ufc game has.
agentsmith- October 27, 2009 at 2:25 pm
That's not Bret Rogers, that's Overeem.

I think the UFC game looks better in the above comparison. The shadows are way too harsh in the EA game... I like the UFC's softer shadows (which are probably much less CPU intensive to render, also). I also think Forrest's position looks much more realistic, with his head up and his legs closer together. The mat in the UFC game has more texture whereas the EA mat is more of a solid color with almost no texture to it.

I also agree with Blazn, I think the UFC game was an excellent first try, despite its many shortcomings. I don't expect EA to do much better, if they even do as well. I hope I'm wrong. Don't hold your breath, peeps.

They have locked out all North american venues for Alistair Overeem. He can only fight over seas. You also can only select him once a year.

The problem with EA for the most part is, they don't compete, they buyout the rights and eliminate the competition via business decisions, not by actually putting out better titles the other company's. I'm not bashing every EA title, but for the most part, this is how EA functions.
Catalyst8487- October 27, 2009 at 1:50 pm
EA is rushing this game out so they can stuff EA MMA 2010 and 2011 and 2012 and every new version every year like Madden.

I'm not looking forward to EA getting their hands on another sports industry.

You know everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I'm going to disagree with the majority here. You can bash the UFC Undisputed 2009, but in all fairness, for the first game on the 360 of it's type, it is an amazing game. The reversals are smooth and simple, the transitions on the mat feel good, the striking even feels good.

Yes, it's missing some positions and things that were in the old Xbox games (like shoving people against the cage and teeing off on them).

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing EA's new game, in fact I welcome the competition. For anyone who's ever followed the Tony Hawk series, you can see what lack of competition can do to a series (went from amazing to awful). EA put's out good games, with good features (take Skate 2 for example, highlight reels and replays being saved/stored online). But bashing on the UFC game and saying it's awful is just outright ignorant. To this day it's one of my favorite online fighting games.

Gah I mean as many flaws that the UFC game had, I still wish that UFC and EA would make a deal.

It's would be a shame for a great game to not have the best fighters in the sport.

I mean other then Fedor not many big names are gonna be on this game.

thats Fedors "O" face...i swear to god it is....
UncleSamsMisguidedChild- October 27, 2009 at 1:06 pm
@ reddod

amen man the UFC game is horrible hopefully EA will make a better product. My worry is that it seems like they spent very little time on the game whereas it took forever for THQ to put out their obamanation. - see what I did there-
echoxer0- October 27, 2009 at 1:03 pm
bas is gonna be in this right?

and red dog, not to be racist but uhh bret is black
Sakuraba3900- October 27, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I like how they used the old school fedor shorts... the blank adidas style vale tudo shorts, its a Pride throwback.

The only problem I have with the picture is that they didnt make Grim dark enough. He looks like he could be a mexican.
Papa Fort- October 27, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Poor technique, his hips are not elevated and feet too far apart. Looks like he's trying to get a tan under fluorescent lighting.
reddog- October 27, 2009 at 12:39 pm
This isnt from the new ea sports video game. It's a picture from Fedor's fight on Nov 7.
Sheps- October 27, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Holy shit, that looks amazing!! I can't wait to get my hands on that game, THQ butchered MMA.
