As first reported by MMAFighting, UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will attempt to make his second belt defense against Gray Maynard at UFC 125, which is slated to go down New Year’s Day 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Both fighters are coming off big decision wins at UFC 118, with Edgar shutting down BJ Penn in a rematch of their first title bout, and Maynard outpointing Kenny Florian. Edgar and Maynard previously met at UFC Fight Night 13 in April 2008, with Maynard scoring a unanimous decision victory and handing Edgar his only career loss to date. Both fighters are tied on the UFC decision-fight leaderboard.
As Chael Sonnen so eloquently put it, "From a business standpoint, acting as though Maynard versus Edgar is going to sell out an arena is about as optimistic as holding onto Jim Morrison’s mail." Which is why the potential loss of Silva vs. Belfort on the card is such a bummer. Plus, Chris Leben is penciled in to fight Brian Stann at the event, not Wanderlei Silva, as we (and Silva himself) had hoped. UFC 125 could really use a solid co-headliner, especially considering it’s a New Year’s card. Any bright ideas?

Personally, this fight was too good to ever leave however card to begin with, so let us hope we percieve it.
Edgar will be with this particular fight round the 3-fight undefeated streak within the UFC with two large-title victories on his resume.
He first shown against then 8- rising star Tyson Griffin and quickly handed him his only loss obtaining a unanimous decision. Inside the latest fight, he beat perennial contender Spencer Fisher, who had previously been 21-2 in individuals days as well as on his method of a title shot.
Edgar can be quite well-rounded, with great wrestling, superior striking and great condition. Victory here could put him within the top contender fight with someone like Roger Huerta while using the champion obtaining a title shot.
Like Edgar, Maynard is undefeated within the UFC at 2--1. The draw with Take full advantage of Emerson is a terrible decision, so he needs to be 3-.
He is a great wrestler, obtaining a strength edge over Edgar, but Frankie will get the benefit round the feet. Let us call conditioning a draw there is available a genuine fight on our hands.
The main difference? Maynard hasn't fought against against against anybody even remotely in Edgar's league while a couple of Frankie's wins came over males who be simple faves over Maynard. I'd need to give Edgar the advantage here.
