EliteXC Under Investigation by Florida Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation

(If Tank was allowed to use his fearsome jiu-jitsu, it would have been a totally different story. Photo courtesy of MMAWeekly.)

When it was first announced that the Florida State Boxing Commission would not be investigating EliteXC’s alleged fight-fixing attempt, it seemed like the scandal would quietly be swept under the rug. But the public/media outcry has become too loud to ignore, and ESPN.com is reporting that the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation — which oversees the FSBC — will open a preliminary investigation into the legality of Seth Petruzelli‘s “knockout bonus”:

“While the Department of Business and Professional Regulation doesn’t have any reason to believe there was a problem with the Slice-Petruzelli fight, given the interest in it, the Department has begun a preliminary investigation to thoroughly review the circumstances of the fight,” said Jennifer Meale, Communications Director for the DBPR.

Responding to this new development, EliteXC Head of Operations Jeremy Lappen continued to deny that the promotion acted inappropriately in any way:

“We offered Seth Petruzelli a knockout bonus, a submission bonus and “fight of the night” bonus. If we were trying to influence the fight, why would we do that?”

Oh, so now Seth was offered a submission bonus too? This is the first we’ve heard about that one, and of course, it directly contradicts what Petruzelli originally said. (“They didn’t want me to take him down.”) Former EliteXC boss Gary Shaw isn’t helping their case either. Speaking to the L.A. Times, $kala’s dad said…

…he wouldn’t hesitate to “go to a fighter and say, ‘We’re looking for a stand-up fight.’ You’re not asking him to throw a fight. You’re talking about a fan-friendly fight, not about protecting Kimbo….I don’t see it as unethical, asking him to be TV and fan friendly.”

Unfortunately, that’s the kind of attitude that could be construed as an attempt to influence the fight — which apparently that has been standard operating procedure at EliteXC. But as much as this hurts EliteXC’s reputation, and MMA’s in general, UFC prez Dana White explains that the real losers in this story are the gamblers:

“The Mandalay Bay and Venetian [casinos] took bets on that fight,” White told ESPN.com. “If you’re a fan of mixed martial arts and you sit down and do all the stats and you’re like ‘man, if this thing goes to the ground, Seth Petruzelli can win this fight, I’m gonna bet on Seth Petruzelli.’

“Then you don’t know the promoters are paying the guy and saying ‘don’t go to the ground?’ That’s criminal. If that was in Las Vegas and the Nevada Athletic Commission had put that fight on, the FBI would be investigating them right now.”

just for the record, yes, you can bet a fighter to win by sub, ko, tko, and the round.

depends on what sportbook has the action.

sorry to be he bearer of bad news. but this is a fact.

what casinos allow u to bet on how the fight ends hurricane thats a bit retarded considering an mma fight can end in so many ways (dq ,cut ,no contest etc) and i never said ground fighting was boring but watching seth lay on an inactive kimbo would be boring and honestly if seth got hit with a good punch he wouldve probably clinched or shot for a takedown. Also i do understand that seth probably wanted the extra cash and agreed to the deal but thats also him to blame not just elite xc ,none of the other fights were influenced (the AA big C stand up questionable) and now that kimbos lost they wont be protecting him so much . And if the fighters are willing to play to their opponents strengths and suffer a loss for some extra cash thats gonna hurt them moving up which also hurts there payroll moving up in the future . All in all seth petruzelli is an idiot and i guarantee if he got hit with a good one he wouldve shot for a takedown so what ever i bet james thompson harder to deal with on the ground than seth is for fucks sakes.

"Most casinos make you bet on how the winner wins, fucking moron. MMA betting works the same away as betting on any other sport: Picking the winner is too damn easy, you have a 50/50 shot."

r u retarded hurricane ,so ur telling me u can win extra by betting that the qb is gonna run 50 yards for a touchdown or that the batter is gonna hit a grand slam for the win .ur the fucking moron ,because if i do recall u bet on which team wins not how they win thats why u have spreads and shit like that u dumb shit

Anyone who just wants to see two no-talent palooka's bang on each other can watch one of those tough guy competitions. There was one on TV last night. Bring on the hay-makers! But that's not MMA. I don't know a SINGLE martial artist who has any respect for Kimbo Slice as a martial artist. He's a newb. he hasn't paid any dues to get the kind of spotlight he's received. EliteXC is a sick, shameful organization for promoting Kimbo and truly despicable for trying to manipulate the OUTCOME of a fight. There's a BIG difference between setting up lop-sided matches and actually trying to influence the what goes down in the cage or ring. The latter is criminal.

"they obviously did pay seth to stand and bang with him ,but does anyone REALLY care. They didnt pay him to lose. They wanted a good main event ,and to blackleg i dont think The Mandalay Bay and Venetian casinos (actually anywhere)allow u to bet on how it ends just who wins so maybe you should stfu before u make ur self look like an idiot"

1.) Yes, I do really care.
2.) They wanted a good main event...yes, because two jackasses aimlessly punching until the more overrated one gets knocked out by an off balance jab is an amazing main event. And real MMA fans hate submission grappling, right dipshit?
3.) Most casinos make you bet on how the winner wins, fucking moron. MMA betting works the same away as betting on any other sport: Picking the winner is too damn easy, you have a 50/50 shot.

Man, If I ever got a chance to fight Kimbo I see the fight ending in 1 of 2 ways...

Kimbo taps because I got him in a really good Indian Burn arm lock. (I'm bringing it back to the school yard days)

Kimbo taps because I have him in a massive titty twister.

OK, neither would happen but if any fighters out there reads this stuff please try one of my ideas.

Make a fighter tap because of an idian burn or titty twister - you would go down in history! HAAA

the WWE puts on good shows on free TV too ... for any of you clowns who dont like to see MMA fights go to the ground b/c they are "boring" should just stick to watching that. Elite XC is bad for this sport, and im stoked that thay are under all this scutiny. Not sure of this will spell the end of that sleazy shit promotion, but one can hope.

"oh yah i forgot to add that they put on a good show for free so anybody who wants to see elite xc go down is kinda(really) retarded"

You know I am all for watching quality fighting no matter who puts on the show.
However when the promoter starts pullling the shit that made boxing fall its bad for everyone. NOT just Elite....
With legit orgs trying to get this into the mainstream shit like this only provides retractors with ammo needed to keep up bullshit arguments that prevent MMA from becoming everything that we all want it to be.
So yea I want to see bullshit orgs and promoters go down. Guess that makes me a retard.

I'm glad to see this issue being given some scrutiny, and like I said before, the FCC or the FBI should be looking into it as well, especially since it has now been revealed that CBS supposedly cut the checks for EliteCX Heat. Looking the other way when such possible corruption is suspected (emphasis possible and suspected) is a slippery slope straight into the type of sham promotion that most of us despise about pro boxing. I have a feeling that Petruzelli was telling the truth in his first statement. What could he have gained by from lying? This obviously isn't going to just go away.

If you've been hearing what other fighter's on the card have been saying, it sounds like EXC could be in some trouble. In addition to Seth's comments, Benji Radach has said he heard nothing about fight bonus' before his fight with Ninja. Also, EXC said they would have had Frank Shamrock fight Kimbo if the FAC had cleared him, but they didn't. Then Frank says he was cleared to fight, but they went with Seth instead. Also, on a side note, Roy Nelson said he heard from Arlovski's camp that Andre was given at least three weeks notice on their fight, when Roy was told that both fighters were given a week's notice. That's a lot of stuff to come out now, which makes EXC look very shadyin the end.

Not only does Seth knock that overrated bozo out on live TV, but his comments potentially take the entire organization down as well. We should all chip in and pay Seth another bonus....

The most amazing victory in the history of martial arts indeed.

Seth is my hero.

KIMBO IS A BUM, HE IS NOT AS DANGEROUS AS HE PORTRAYS, IF YOU CAN WEATHER HIS STORM OF BLOWS, YOUR HALFWAY THERE . ON THE RECENT FIGHT , IT WAS NOT FIXED , SETH KNOCKED OUT THE BUM, AND NOW THE MEDIA AND HIS PEOPLE HAVE A DISINFORMATION SITUATION GOING TO SAVE FACE FOR THE BIG BLACK MMA HOPE, GO BACK TO FIGHTING IN THE GUTTER KIMBO..............

Not if they bet for him to win by sub. You see, taking bets on all the ways a fighter can win is really only fair if all of those options are possible. stfu, Rob.

Josh Gross pins Jeremy Lappen down on the specifics of KO bonuses in EliteXC:

Petruzelli (10-4) said he received an additional $20,000 to $30,000 for the short right hand that snapped Slice’s jaw after 14 seconds into the main-event fight. While EliteXC Fight Operations Chief, Jeremy Lappen, declined to discuss a dollar amount, he confirmed the presence of a guaranteed knockout bonus in Petruzelli’s revised fight contract, which also included a higher purse for the trouble of fighting Slice.

Unlike the UFC’s lucrative performance-based bonus structure awarded after each event for the best knockout, submission and fight, Lappen said a third to a half of all bout agreements offered by EliteXC come with an assured knockout clause.

“We’re just trying to create exciting fights,” Lappen said, doing some spinning of his own. “Fast-paced energy fights. It’s just something we’ve always done.”

EliteXC, it seems, does not view submissions, widely thought of as the most technical aspect of MMA, as an overly important portion of an exciting fight.

“We don’t give submission bonuses,” Lappen said. But Petruzelli “knew a knockout bonus was possible before the fight.”

Hmmm.

---

Back and forth. First NO sub bonus, now there is.
