ESPN Segment On UFC Salaries to Air Sunday Morning; UFC to Counter By Releasing Unedited Lorenzo Fertitta Interview

(“If they aren’t with us, they’re against us, and in that case we will crush them.”)

The much ballyhooed ESPN: Outside the Lines (which we originally erroneously identified as E:60) episode dealing with UFC salaries and the assertion that the promotion is becoming a monopoly will air Sunday morning on the sports network and Dana White says he’s looking forward to it.

According to the UFC president, the company is preparing to counter-program the show with the uncut and unedited version of the interview with UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta to expose ESPN and the outlet’s main MMA analyst Josh Gross, who contributed to the episode.

White and Gross have a tumultuous  history, and White makes no bones about his feelings about the former managing editor of, who revealed the finalists of TUF 4 prior to the season finale of the show and wrote a vitriolic open letter to White, pointing a finger at him and the UFC for the epidemic of fighter PED use.

According to an ESPN story posted yesterday about Sunday’s piece, several UFC fighters who expressed displeasure about fighter salaries were too afraid to speak about the issue on record. The only past and present fighter who would talk about it was Ken Shamrock who recently lost a legal battle with the MMA juggernaut. White has promised to expose Shamrock as well.

Perhaps the most telling tweet by White touches on why ESPN, who has a lucrative UFC broadcasting deal in the UK would attack Zuffa on this front.

Coincidentally, MMA-Manifesto released a comprehensive list of all of  the UFC base salaries this week and although they are a far cry from those of their counterparts in other professional sports, fighters don’t do *that bad*, considering they often receive back room bonuses and sponsorship money as well. Keep in mind that a lot of these guys made minimum wage (or approximately $16,000 a year) prior to being signed by Zuffa. That being said, hopefully the disparity in pay eventually matches the 70/30 split boxers share with promoters some day, but unless a union eventually happens, it’s unlikely.

You work as hard as you can to create and rebuild, you give assholes like Xenophon a reason to exist, and now you're expected to kiss the ass of somebody who wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you?

If ZUFFA-era UFC wasn't as popular as it is right now, then Gross would be doing data entry and would weigh 350 pounds. Which is probably lighter than he is right now.

I am surprised by all the Dana White dick suckers found around here....CP is has got to be the biggest section of flunky UFC cheerleaders on the face of the planet.
Matter of fact, where is that fool Drano, hopefully choking on some cock again.

Josh Gross is a worthless waste-of-skin-piece-of-shit that needs to move on to women's figure skating or something. He's the epitome of a fuckin' tool.

Josh Gross can take his whiny Michael Moore-esque bullshit, with his Ken Shamrock interview as "proof" and shove it up Lorretta's cunt.
Jugger- January 13, 2012 at 8:02 pm
I used to listen to Josh and TJ on Sherdog radio. I got tired of him because he was always, and I mean always, whining and moaning about this-or-that. Dude is just chronically griping about stuff. He believes it's his duty as a journalist to whine about everything... I got tired of him.

I, for one, think this is the glory days of MMA. Fighters still fight for the pride and love of it. Not the money. Fighters stay busy and fight who they're told to fight. As soon as the union and sky-high paydays come, we'll look back and remember the good ole days.

@Mike Russell: Yea that's a long time ago. Things sure changed. Journalism is a bit like office politics, you can't piss people off or they won't return your calls tomorrow. So even when you're being critical, you got to make it sound middle of the road. I don't read Josh that often, but he likes to pick a side and argue a position. You guys know what it's like; it's not easy taking a stand. :)

Fun Fact: Dana was courting Josh to take over as Editor for when they bought the company, but Gross didn't want to hand in his journalism cred to take the gig.
BaghdadBob- January 13, 2012 at 4:32 pm
Sigh, Dana has a lot to learn about dealing with the press. Sure, sometimes you need to push back hard, but not like a 13 year old who's been accused of making out with the fat girl.
Those of you who think Dana is somehow going to "get" ESPN are delusional. Get your heads out of your asses.
AndyInflammatory- January 13, 2012 at 4:20 pm
And when you piss off people who are prone to dreams of revenge, and who have the means to cut you off from a large part of your job description (i.e reporting on the UFC), then you pretty much get what you deserve. Gross better have the facts and not some E! Channel bullshit.
KarmaAteMyCat- January 13, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Why would Dana's PR people be having a fit? He's really not saying anything nearly that bad and everything incredibly Factual and he plans on backing it up with proof... hmm..
AndyInflammatory- January 13, 2012 at 4:09 pm
people give guys like Gross too much credit for what they do. He made his name riding the coat tails of individuals with vision, and really was just lucky enough to attach himself to a growing trend in sports. Now he's getting big dollars at ESPN he's getting an inflated sense of his own worth, and all those forum trolls who thrive on shit-talk and gossip are helping to feed that fire.

Who is remembered at the end of the day - the successful person or their biographer?
shatterproof- January 13, 2012 at 4:04 pm
gross is an idiot, but that doesn't mean the ufc isn't a monopoly. Dana is losing his shit here though, his PR people reading his tweets must be losing theirs too. Twitter flaming, one step away from the sherdog forums.

Dana White navigates media relations like he is a kamikazee pilot, he either comes out on top or crashes and burns but takes the opposition with him .

I agree man!
