Fabricio Werdum: Always the Last to Know

Fabricio Werdum MMA UFC

Considering the sport’s “inyaface” attitude, MMA organizations are surprisingly non-confrontational when it comes to dealing with their employees. Time and time again we hear stories of fighters who find out their contracts have been shredded (or that the league they fight for no longer exists) not from the company HR department, but from blogs like this one. The latest example is Fabricio Werdum, who thought his job security with the UFC was solid until Tatame filled him in. It seems like the big guy is still in denial:

“I’m surprised by the news. My sister is my manager and she’s the one that deals with the UFC and she always contacted me first before making decision. From what I know the UFC have not contacted her. I still have four more fights left on my contract that runs until 2010. From what they told me I should fight in February, July, November and April of 2010. In fact, I’m moving to the US to prepare for those fights with Rafael Cordeiro.” said Werdum who is still making final arrangements to make his move to USA in December.

Well, your first mistake was making your sister your manager — the woman’s got enough to worry about, what with the new baby and the kitchen renovations and the new season of Lipstick Jungle. Maybe she just forgot to tell you that the UFC called to fire you. It happens.

Werdum’s statement seems to contradict MMA Weekly’s earlier report that “Vai Cavalo” is already looking for a new place to fight, but the firing part seems accurate, at least; as Fightlinker points out, Werdum’s name is gone from the rolls at I guess that’s what passes for a firm handshake and a “good luck” these days…

Way to assume the problem is his sister. Could it be that UFC is dicking another fighter like they seem to do time and again? Geez fella! Ockams Razors! No need to make assumptions when the easiest explanation seems to be in your face every time.

I'm still confused, is he fired or not?
Joe- November 10, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Yes.. very strange he's off the website when these rumours broke.. very strange indeed..

OH WAIT.. they broke BECAUSE he was off the Website.. !!

MMAWeekly essentially made up a story ..

Justin Eilers, Tito Ortiz, and Jorge Santiago are just a few fighters who are no longer with the company that are still on the web site. While Werdum being bumped from the site at the same time these rumors have broke makes it seem all the more obvious, the point is that having your name on the web roster doesn't necessarily mean you are with the company currently.

isn't ken in the ufc hall of fame? why would they take a hall of famer off their website
Joe- November 10, 2008 at 2:20 pm
KEN SHAMROCK is still on the UFC website.

How is that a credible Source??

They could be updating his pic for all we know.

And Tatame got the news from MMAWeekly who MADE UP the story when they saw he was gone from their website.

Come on guys. You're better than that.

I feel like he knows and is just playing dumb. If you get syphillis from that stripper from the dive bar and you just pretend like it's not there, it's like the whole thing never happened. The past week or so of Werdum's life is syphillis and the strippers name is Junior Dos White. Just keep living the dream Werdum and hope you stay asleep.

"who thought his job security with the UFC was solid until Tatame filled him in."

I think the UFC was pretty harsh. He's still a top 10 heavyweight. That said, he seems kind of naive. He's a veteran of the sport. He should know by now, especially after fighting in Japan, that job security is a fantasy in the current MMA world.

Damn...that's some cold, cold stuff right there.

I think someone at the UFC could have at least picked up the phone or sent Werdum a text message:

WERDUM: Hey Dana. Wht up?

DANA: Bad news. Yr fired. Srry.

WERDUM: LOL! Srsly, wht did you want to tell me?

DANA: Cant tlk now. At Johhny Rockets with the kids. Fric said "dwink"! LMFAO!

wow, it totally sucks to be werdum right now... first you get screwed of a title shot, then gets ko'd by a nobody and now, he doesn't have a clue that his boss just fired him? it's now official, it sucks to be werdum.
