Affliction had a card slated for Aug. 1 with a main event of Fedor Emelianenko, the No. 2 fighter in the Yahoo! Sports mixed martial arts rankings, against former UFC champion Josh Barnett at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

But Barnett tested positive for an anabolic steroid and on Tuesday was denied a license to fight by the California State Athletic Commission.

That left Affliction scrambling to find a replacement for Emelianenko. With no viable alternatives – the best was former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, who was already down to 195 pounds for a scheduled middleweight fight – Affliction early Friday opted to scrap the show.

Later in the day, Affliction came to terms on a deal with the UFC in which it would quit promoting fight cards. The UFC is likely to absorb the contracts of all Affliction fighters except Emelianenko.

Emelianenko’s contractual status is not known, though UFC president Dana White said Friday he is trying to negotiate a deal with the Russian.

Multiple sources had indicated to Yahoo! Sports that Affliction was on the verge of a deal with Strikeforce for some sort of merger, but that fell apart in the last 24-48 hours. That’s when talks began anew between White and Affliction. They had spoken earlier in July about such a scenario, but were unable to come to a deal.""

The reason Attencio canceled instead of going ahead is elemenart business economics. Its a concept called Sunk Cost.

The money they've spent promoting this card and even building the franchise is SPENT. Its gone, never coming back. The money they would spend to put on this show-- tv airtime, fighter salaries, broadcast crew, and more-- has not been spent yet.

Let's say they are 5 mil in the hole right now. Let's say because of this Barnett issue, they expect their ppv sales and live gate to take a major hit, and won't cover the fighter salaries and other costs. Remember, Fedor alone makes 1+ mil per fight.

So if the choice is losing 5 mil or losing 8 mil, I pick 5. The first 5 million is already lost, its sunk cost. People do stupid shit all the time because they don't think about money this way, throwing good money after bad.

I have to agree with the comments regarding Tom Atencio. Seems like he is finally giving up, and has lost the balls to keep things moving forward. If Affliction lives or dies based on fucking Josh Barnett, then it was all a house of cards to begin with, and now it has fallen. I mean, Vitor wouldn't have been my first choice to see fight Fedor, but hell, I would still watch that fight, simply out of the morbid curiosity to see if Vitor could pull a horseshoe out of his ass. And besides Vitor, Brett Rogers was ready to step in. Affliction was already in debt, so why bail out one week before the event? Makes no sense whatsoever. Talk about a clusterfuck. Between Barnett's stupidity and Atencio's ball shrinkage, this is one shitty situation. And in the end, the fans lose and the fighters lose bigtime. If Atencio had any balls left, he would have held a press conference with Fedor and Vitor, made it seem like an epic battle, and keep this shit going. Then, he should have met with all the fighters to tell them that he is sticking behind them, no matter what, and will fight for the survival of the promotion and for the livelihoods of all the fighters in Affliction. I'm not saying that Affliction would necessarily have a long-term future, but shit, this was a pussy move. Also, Affliction should give some sort of severance to the fighters that were fucked over. A lot of the lower level fighters were probably really depending on that income. I understand them cancelling it, but they are cancelling it because they are obviously worried about the hit in the PPV sales ($). The fighters shouldn't have to just eat all of that.
