Fedor Emelianenko Announces Retirement Following Pedro Rizzo Win

(“Well, back at the bottom again, eh Vadim?”)

Yesterday marked the end of an era, as legendary heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko announced his retirement from MMA following his knockout victory over Pedro Rizzo. As Fedor told RIA Novosti: “I think it is time I quit. My family influenced my decision. My daughters are growing without me, that’s why it’s time to leave.”

Fedor ends his 12-year career with an overall record of 34-4 (one no-contest), highlighted by a nearly four-year stint as the heavyweight champion of PRIDE, and notable victories over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice), Mark Coleman (twice), Mirko Cro Cop, Kevin Randleman, Mark Hunt, Tim Sylvia, and Andrei Arlovski.

Despite his legacy-damaging losing skid in 2010-2011 under the Strikeforce banner, the Last Emperor still managed to go out on top. Judging from his dominant performance against Rizzo — in which Fedor showed flashes of the speed and power that established him as a legend in the first place — he could have gone another five years beating up faded legends and local cans. Instead, he walks away with his health and his dignity intact, and riding a three-fight win streak since November.

edor beat the best available in Pride at a time when their HW division was stronger than the UFC's. He probably lost his last few years of top competition because of his management. But like already stated.. he didn't mouth off and he ALWAYS came to fight. I'll always wonder how he may have done if he reinvented himself as a light heavy weight.

ohhhh sheena I would LOVE for you to get your chance to do that. I would enjoy getting your blood all over me.
XENOPHON- June 23, 2012 at 9:14 am
With Fedor being the smaller fighter most often, unlike many of the UFC's best - show me a fight where he started running. Running seems to a UFC specialty these days, no?
XENOPHON- June 23, 2012 at 9:01 am
@DranoSucks - Oh how I would still like to slap you around during a few rounds for all the bitch ass comments you make.

The article was readable until it said "his dignity intact". Fedor surrendered any dignity he possessed when he started those NYE freakshow/can fights. Fact is, we will never know how good he was, or how overrated he was, due to the laughable management behind him. Good luck to Fedor, and his future in Russian television commercials.

Nice to see him go out on a win streak, too bad he didn't ever sign with the UFC. Maybe once Dana retires the next president will be more benevolent and induct him into the Hall of Fame based off his PRIDE credentials. A guy can dream.

Maybe the end of his career wasn't the best but the guy beat all the greats in Pride when they were all in their prime. Anyone saying that he never really did anything is bullshit. You get in there and do it.

I originally got into MMA when I saw a video online called "bored looking fighter vs. Angry fighter." I then went and watched all his other fights and then every other fight I could find. It all started with Fedor and I'll miss him. Sure he beat a bunch of cans, but it was a lot of fun watching.

The most overrated fighter ever. Crushing can after can and getting his ass whooped every time he fought real fighters and somehow dumb people still think he's great. You won't be missed Fedor you were an average fighter at best.
amsterdamheavy- June 22, 2012 at 9:47 am
Meh. Its shame thatll he'll be remembered for can crushing and WHAT IFs. Best Wishes to Fedor, While I despise his management and some of his decisions (which have marred his legacy) he's always been a gentleman and he's always come to fight.
