(Oh, what could have been…)
According to TheFightNetwork, Fedor Emelianenko vs. Vitor Belfort is really happening:
Shawn Tompkins, head trainer at Xtreme Couture, has confirmed to The Fight Network that Vitor Belfort has signed on to fight Fedor Emelianenko August 1st at the Affliction ‘Trilogy’ event in Anaheim, California. Belfort was originally scheduled to fight Jorge Santiago on the same card in a middleweight bout. The main event was forced to be changed after Josh Barnett failed a pre fight drug test by the California State Athletic Commission.
Affliction VP Tom Atencio did not make reference to this replacement — or make any other earth-shattering announcements — on today’s conference call, which you can get a summary of here. Meanwhile, undefeated bruiser (and actual heavyweight) Brett Rogers did in fact throw his name out as an option. A source told SI’s Josh Gross that the Grim was asking for "a purse approaching at least the $800,000 Affliction Entertainment paid Sylvia to fight Emelianenko." Affliction, it seems, respectfully declined.

commentsYou're an idiot.
Stop worrying about it, nobody But you is bitching about.....oh wait, you and Tito. Congrats you are like Tito.
Dude look up the purse amounts.... they post them here. Look at the amounts, then compare them to boxing. Some of the UFC fighters still have other JOBS!!!
It would be better if they could afford to train all day instead of after work... stupid asshat....

I hope Affliction is successful. The better they do... the better for the sport. Real MMA fans want Affliction to do well... because it will force Dana to start paying the fighters what they deserve instead of having a stranglehold on the industry. It will force the UFC to treat fighters better... develope a ranking system... and PAY THE GUYS WHAT THEY DESERVE!!! If that happens... and more money is there for the fighters I believe you'll see better fighters... I KNOW you'll see better fighters."
OOOOOO go blow it out your ass. fuck assfliction. fuck overpaid asshats. fuck stupid fans who want MMA to be the nfl or goddamn NBA, bunch a crybaby assholes who get way more than they are worth. shut up already!
Ohh he beat Sylvia and Arlovski, former UFC champions (they're former champions for a reason because they lost the belt to someone else and were released from the UFC for a reason becaus they suck), they were also both champions when the UFC's heavyweight division was at it's weakest I mean Arlovski fought Justin Eilers for the title, says it all.
Evident by how bad they are is Ray Mercer and a tire fiter beat them. So Fedor beating them means nothing, King of the Cans. Most overrated, over hyped fighter there is.
Hasn't fought anyone in years, I'm really surprised they didn't bring in Maurice Smith to replace Barnett, it'd be another FORMER ufc champion for Fedor to beat like it means something.
I don't have the fight anymore, but I seem to recall Arlovski landing decently and stunning Fedor at least once. I won't say beating, but I think he was pushing Fedor. I will take you at your word until I can see the fight again.
if you watch the fight in slow mo you will notice AA lands nothing, fedor blocks or knocks away most of those strikes. Just the manner in which he did it makes him look like he was getting hit.
Fedor used the windmill to knock away AA's punches, what does that tell you about AA's striking?

Hall of Fame!
Way to a) establish yourself as a reborn middleweight and b) prove that you weren't ducking Mousasi. Oh wait...!
If Vitor beats Fedor...*stifles giggles*...then I have no doubt he'll find himself back in the UFC fighting Anderson Silva very soon. But then if I shat diamonds, I'd be a fucking millionaire. The guys gets credit for stepping up and trying to save the event, I suppose, but I would have much preferred him to concentrate on his own division rather than having delusions of being the next Seth Petruzelli.
I don't understand why fighters who are non-heavyweights have this bizarre wet dream fantasy of getting in the ring with Fedor. The man is a phoenom, sure, but if you aren't usually inclined to hop up two weight classes for any other fighter then why would you want to take on THE best heavyweight in the world? Fedor's Christ-like reputation makes him a more appealing target, sure, but I wouldn't ever pray I had a puncher's chance against a man whose scorched earth approach to fighting has handily decimated every challenger in his path. ESPECIALLY on a week's notice.
And Senor Grimmjitsu is ridiculous. I know it's a not a secret that Affliction pays fighters way, way above the market rate but the man just got greedy. Sylvia and Arlovsi were at least big names and - at the time - considered legitimate threats. I understand he's been paid comparatively weakly and would like a decent payday but $800,000? I can just imagine his manager having Atencio on speaker phone and trying to keep a straight face while everyone else in the room is covering their mouths to stop from howling with laughter until he hung up the phone.
I suppose it's encouraging that Tom Atencio and his posse finally found a dollar amount that was too unreasonable, but that's happening about three events too late, IMO.
I'm not believing anything until an official statement comes from Atencio.
CP...I know you want to be the cool MMA news site to scoop everyone, but it would be most unfortunate if you report two BS stories two day in a row. Professional journalism at its finest.
By fight time, Vitor will probably be within 10-15 pounds of Fedor. Size shouldn't be that huge of an issue. Vitor is also a bjj black belt and is supposedly on track mentally.
I'm a Vitor fan (since the early UFC tournament days) and therefore a bit biased, but I think this could be good fight. I am more amped for this ppv than before. Fedor will probably win, but Belfort stands a decent chance.

I would fight Fedor on 5 minutes notice for a cool $100,000. Grim should have done the same just for name recognition.
-which would have barely covered your medical bills.
