MMA Video Tribute: 9 ‘Falling Tree’ Knockouts

Fedor vs. Rogers Was the Ninth-Most-Watched MMA Fight in U.S. History

(Look familiar? Photo courtesy of this set on Combat Lifestyle.)

Though the entire broadcast of "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers" averaged 4.04 million viewers — placing it behind Kimbo-headlined CBS cards like "EliteXC: Primetime" (4.85 million viewers) and "EliteXC: Heat" (4.56 million viewers) — the ratings for Saturday night’s card shot up during the main event. MMA Weekly reports that 5.46 million home viewers were in attendance between 11:00 p.m. and 11:15 p.m., making the Emelianenko vs. Rogers match the ninth-most-watched fight in U.S. MMA history. You can check out this slightly outdated list to see where that puts them, but basically, the fight fell just 15,000 viewers short of Michael Bisping vs. Matt Hamill, and about 1.8 million viewers short of the reigning champion, Kimbo vs. James Thompson. Senior Executive Vice President of CBS Primetime Kelly Kahl was pleased with the numbers:

“I think its impressive we got 5 and a half million viewers to see a guy that to a good part of the country was an unknown. The young male demos speak to MMA’a increasing popularity. To go toe-to-toe with college football says something about the growth pattern of MMA.”

Not coincidentally, the 11:00-11:15 p.m. block coincides with the time when the UFC’s "Main Events" broadcast on Spike had just ended — so a large part of the bump could be attributed to MMA fans switching from one channel to another. (No word yet on how Spike did that night.) The question is: Can Fedor draw even better ratings in his next CBS appearance, now that he’s more of a known quantity? Will he ever approach — dare we say it — Kimbo-esque levels of stardom?

will DW shut up. rogers would have a great fight with mir or carwin. rogers would be a top HW in the ufc. mir isnt great and Lesner still has a lot to prove. lesner has great, endless potential but he beat mir and coture. not that impressive. like everyone i want lesner v fedor. remember that lesners only gameplan at this point is to takedown, hold down and pound, he is very good at this. but can he hold fedor down? also lesner has never been hit in his life to wrestle at a top level ur whole life is fine. but he didnt like when mir or randy hit him. so if fedor puts hands on him???

Dana's a douche sometimes. Fedor vs Brock has to happen. Fedor has good ground game, even against big opponents. A lot quicker than people seem to think.. guess that's because he stands still and doesn't bob and weave like a retard while he talks to reporters. But Lesnar would get hit once and be like oh shit I fucked up. By middle of second round all of us will be standing at the bar saying wow Brock got ktfo.

do u not understand that there are people that think ufc=mma, they dont understand what promotions are, and think that what ufc says is gold. u want to tell me that all their ppv are great cards?? as a fan u should call bullshit on the ufc weak ass cards and matchups when they have them. they also have many great cards and matchups and have the best production ect. my point is they can give it to us on every card. they have the fighters to do so. u must like seeing all your TUF favs?

Dana SOOOOOOOooooooooo wanted Fedor to lose . . . I bet he's pulling his hair out over it. Seems Dana not only wants full control of the UFC but all of MMA. So, I love seeing other organizations come up with great fights. In due time(when Butterbean's younger brother(Dana) pays out reasonable sums of money for ALL of the fighters)the best will meet. Until then, we are left fathead hoarding the cash.
