Fight of the Day: Jon Jones vs. Andre Gusmao

(Props: MMA Glory via MMA Linker. Apologies for the poor quality.)

The most unsung performance from UFC 87 was that of Jon Jones, the Octagon newbie who began fighting professionally in April. Though Jones’s decision win against Andre Gusmao didn’t make the pay-per-view broadcast, those who saw it were treated to one of the wildest offensive displays in recent memory. Check out the video above, where Jones pulls out every trick in his whoopass bag, including the sick takedown at the video’s 2:14 mark, a spinning elbow at 7:11, a spinning backfist at 7:17, more backfists at 11:54 and 13:05, and the switch-leg flying knee at 16:46. (And of course all those knees to the groin.) Sloppy? Absolutely. But with his wrestling prowess, aggressiveness, and creativity, he could eventually develop into a truly scary fighter.

And also, the opening Mike Goldberg/Joe Rogan exchange at 0:21-0:34? Instant classic.

Get that fat Turd Butterbean off fight of the week and put this up there... nice to see young new fighters instead of obese, sideshow, cartoon cans.

Uhm.. so did anyone else think that Jones looked a LOT like Anderson Silva in regards to his stance, his lightness on his feet, and just the overall shape and general look of his legs. Those "phantom" legs looked like Silva's... minus the Thai Clench to multiple knees in the face combination...

Damn what a awful video , the quality looks to be that of a hand held recorder pointed at a tv with the brightness on -75. Hell 3/4's of the video all I can see of Jones is the words on his trunks and his legs , his upper body totally blended with the background. The ref too , looked like a phantom ninja fading in and out of the darkness. Kinda funny really disembodied legs running around the octagon.

Jon Jones is the man. I met him after this match. I was very impressed to see him win this match with only a few month's training against an opponent who trains with the Gracies and has probably been training for much longer. Funny thing is, when I asked him about the spinning back fists and elbows, he told me he got the idea from Tony Jaa movies! Hope to see more of him in the future, he's actually a really cool guy.

Black guy Jones, White guy Gusmao!!! Love it, I agree with Joe. Just say the obvious, we all do at home.
