Five Ways For Jon Fitch to Get Another Title Shot

(Sometimes winning and heart aren’t enough. Just ask Vince McMahon.)

During an appearance on Steve Cofield and Kevin Iole’sĀ ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM’s “The MMA Insiders” show on Friday, UFC president Dana White made it clear that in spite of the fact that Jon Fitch has not lost since dropping a decision to Georges St-Pierre three years ago, the American Kickboxing Academy captain won’t likely get a title shot anytime soon because the fight is a tough one to sell.

“Everybody is saying ‘Jon Fitch is one of the best in the world, when is he fighting GSP?’ The problem is he went in and fought GSP and got destroyed,” White explained like it happened a month ago. “I mean GSP completely dominated him from the first round to the fifth round and beat him up and dropped him and everything else…”

It’s funny, Kenny Florian keeps getting title shots and the UFC has been trying to put together a rematch between Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans despite how the last ones went.

But we digress.

Instead of scratching our heads over the UFC’s double standards when it comes to earning a title shot, we’ve come up with five suggestions for Fitch to get what he has coming to him since winning doesn’t seem to be enough.

Check out the gallery after the jump.

Great piece: funny, and made some insightful points.

Title or no, I'd pay to watch Fitch anytime.

Does anyone, or has anyone ever seen a picture or a video of where Anderson Silva has a natural mop of hair on his otherwise bald head?

Good for you signing up....I was getting filled with lead for a while. These fuckers around here must have spent time training by Blackwater.
This shoot house has been the hardest by far. GRIN

@Pen Fifteen
You make all good points.
Watching a live fight, the guy to the left you is not going to see what the guy to right of you witnessed. You will think they are both fucked up, as they will often think the same as you.
Aside from the smack talk, which is par for the course around here, there is nothing personal. I hold no ill repute.
As for the 300 word comment, it was actually 447. Less than a single sheet of paper in a word document.
Few can convey their own unique perspective with a one liner, all the time. For years I thought a one line memo was a sign of command (there is a famous 4 star who was known for his 1 line instructions) but as I had to compete at higher levels, I had to up my game.
Not saying anyone else here needs too, it's just what I have grown accustomed to. Maybe if I used Twitter of Facebook I would have different perspective.
Isn't that what the GAME is all about? From Cooking an MRE, to MMA, to steering a Wing Suit in mid flight. The GAMES always about exploiting from different angles or unique perspectives.
It rare to be able to do so with one or two sentences, I give you props most of the time.

can you tell me the round and time when fitch rocked GSP? I've watched that fight at least 10 times and never saw GSP even remotely rocked.
danomite- August 18, 2011 at 11:11 am
0. Be less boring/finish a fight
I know the article was less about fitch and more about some of the past title shots that made us scratch are heads and say "what the fuck?" but if we are really talking about what Fitch needs to do to get a title shot, the only thing necessary is finish a damn fight. And I'm not talking about trapping a guy's arm in the third round and love tapping his face until Mazagatti gets tired of asking the guy if he can continue. I'm talking about making a guy lose consciousness by either choking him out or punching him out.
Pen Fifteen- August 18, 2011 at 7:50 am
Yeah, and if Fitch had drawn with the champ, not to mention holding a previous win over him, he probably would have gotten a rematch too.
Mike Russell- August 18, 2011 at 7:43 am
Gray Maynard had a draw with Frankie Edgar.
Pen Fifteen- August 18, 2011 at 7:00 am
Again, you seem to think that taking a 300-word dump on your keyboard is the same thing as making a point. People rooting for Fitch are bound and determined to prove that it isn't "fair" that he isn't getting a title shot. Because, after all, that's what we like about sports. If it ain't fair, it may as well be the Dubya Dubya E! But guess what fuckers? Life isn't fair. And can you think of the last time someone got a title shot coming off of a draw anyway? Seriously, someone tell me the last time that happened.
DonMatus- August 18, 2011 at 6:41 am
I registered just this just to post MO.
It's insane people knocking Fitch There is really no argument for him not to get a title fight from anyone that's not a delusional troll. And I'm a Canadian GSP fan.

I wish registration to any mma website had to be verified buy a solid punch to the chin. Than couch jockeys might be a little more realistic. Might be too much to ask though. lol

Hey Pen Fifteen....what is your profession?
Part of my profession is being an excellent competitive researcher.
I can swear your user name cross referenced through two cuts outs, and then to a third.
Your right, I bet people hear would care more about what you have to say, vs little old me.

@Pen Fifteen
To Fitch's credit the draw was against BJ Penn - and that tough fuck carries a lot of credit on my books since he was a kid and walked away from the UFC's belt. The came back and dominated
Of course that draw was not forgotten, it was simply a draw. I meant to say "its counter-intutive, but the fact is only wins and loses matter." It's like a stalemate in Chess. The board gets wiped clean, and neither opponent moves up or down in the ranking but any bookie worth his beans with tell you that's bad for business.

The draw doesn't count unless an organization has a transparent ranking. The UFC refuses to do that the way they run their business. Their preference is by manipulating fighters ranks based on fan demands. Thing about it, the UFC is ran much more like a cheap strip club fused with sports book.
Mob fight fixers of the past, similar to the modern day Joe Silva (along with the problem officials and judges) used to end up disappeared and buried deep a hole out in the Vegas desert all the fucking time. With gambling when the fix is in, the worst thing is a bookie that fucked up, or a referee, judge, or offical that couldn't be corralled into siding with the house.
Here's a Psychology 101 lesson anyone can do from home. Go back and watch that Hardy/Lytle fight with the volume off. No pumping from the Italian Rogan or his Jewish sidekick Goldberg, and you see a completely different fight opposed to the way they skillfully spun it. Especially leading up the that last minute 3rd round choke which was handed to Lytle on a silver platter. How come Hardy gets 5 losses, and its Lorenzo of all people that breaks the news that Hardy is staying put, and now calling Vegas home?
If anyone hear's something several times in a short period from an announcer, you will begin to see what your being told. Even if its false. Don't you ever wonder or ask why, why are these two UFC commentators are merely contractors and not legitimate UFC employees? Anyone in business knows you keep all liabilities hemmed up with ultra restrictive contracts.
The draw actually happens naturally in many fights all the time, but the company paid contractors - not direct employees always paint the fight per the promotions preference. Personally I think a lot of the skewed decisions people dislike around here should be called nothing more than a draw. Problem is there is big money involved behind the scenes with most every major televised fight.

Whether or not he finishes fights, he flat out WINS and usually beats the shit out of people in the process. I guarantee this stems all the way back to Fitch not wanting to give up his rights to the first Zuffa video game without getting compensated. Dana has done wonders for the sport, I admit, but his grudge holdings and double standards are a joke. Is the point of the UFC to finish fights or win fights? And nobody can convince me that a Fitch/GSP rematch would be any more boring than GSP vs. anyone not named Nick Diaz. Personally I love Fitch and think he's a great MMA fighter. Ask BJ if he thinks that Fitch is boring and undeserving of a rematch. How will we ever find out who the best fighters are if Dana is basing matches strictly on what sells? Total bullshit if you ask me. Ps I really hate Koscheck
Jawbreaker_46- August 17, 2011 at 9:13 pm
Or he could finish a friggin fight for once!!
Pen Fifteen- August 17, 2011 at 8:25 pm
"When Jon fights I sit and watch wondering if the next opponent could beat him. I never see anyone coming close, and so the decisions and always unanimous and in his favor by a clear margin."
Except in his last fight, when he went to a draw with a 155er. Seriously, stop the marathon posts, no one gives a shit what you have to say about anything.
j-k-martin- August 17, 2011 at 8:05 pm
The problem with GSP vs. Fitch is that it puts two of the most dominate fighters in the world in the same cage and then asks the question, "Who can be the more overly cautious wrestler?"
RwilsonR- August 17, 2011 at 8:04 pm
And Fitch is as arrogant as anyone I've seen in this sport. He may not be as loud about it as many fighters, but he is far from humble.
RwilsonR- August 17, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Dana should just give Fitch a good wrestler, like Brenneman. Fitch isn't even that good of a wrestler, and he'll get a taste of his own humping. That'll solve Dana's problem.
Oh, and yeah... shiity article.
XENOPHON- August 17, 2011 at 7:58 pm
The article was fine, the intent was clearly conveyed but the finals analysis was a bit flawed.
Fitch rocks. Look at it from another perspective. When Jon fights I sit and watch wondering if the next opponent could beat him. I never see anyone coming close, and so the decisions and always unanimous and in his favor by a clear margin.
Getting a KO, or a submission may seem much more convincing to many, but to pull the 'unanimous decision' is at times even more work. Instead of a single referee to make the call, you are reliant on 3 individuals speaking from the same page.
Sounds counterproductive, but the fact is only wins and loses matter. In homeboyz case, he is nearly unbeatable. After nearly 30 profession fights, only 3 individuals from a mix of each martial arts styles was ever able to ever knock-out, submit, or secure a decision against him.
The current Champ "GSP-ion" at best could convince the judges of a decision. It was nearly 10 years ago during Fitch's 1st and 4th professional fights he had ever been choked or knocked out. Out of 28 total fights, that's notable.
Here is Fitch's problem...and the author of this article hit right on it. Unfortunately he was unable to give his thesis a clear and concise answer in his conclusion. That answer is this. (and I hope Fitch's dumb fucking ass reads this)
Fitch needs to flush and then rebuild his public brand. Even if he can't stomach the thought of being an arrogant prick, then at a minimum - try and mimic Dan Henderson's approach to marketing.
Here's your cue Karma - pick up that pen and place the notebook at the ready bro!
Fitch has got a hot enough little unit under his arm so that he is viewed by all as cool. Even I make it a point to keep a hot Hollyood hooker in my stable. Also, Fitch can think before he speaks -he even speaks clear and concise.
The problem with his entire delivery is that when on his feet and speaking he makes a major tactical mistake, he is too fucking humble.
If you can't quite see what I am getting at, go rent that movie with that big black gorilla sized muther fucker as its star. The movie is called the "Green Mile."
Then watch that shit at least twice with two days in between viewings. Once you realize that being humble is literally a death sentence, you can pitch me a nickel for the tip.
Matter of fact, "being Humble is a death sentence" is called a double entendre.

Title shots should go to the most deserving athletes, there is an organisation which promotes events based on how much it will sell, its called the WWE.
I know dana has to run a business and all that, but UFC is a company involved in the sport of MMA and Ideally should be matchmaking on who's earnt the shots via winning fights, not on who can sell the most T-shirts
