Fighters Only is passing along a report that Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Hong Man Choi will fight one another on the K-1 Fields Dynamite New Year’s Eve show in Japan. Apparently the event organizers felt like with the card the way it was, there wasn’t enough of a potential for weird shit to happen. This should solve that problem.
Cro Cop was hoping to settle his score with Alistair Overeem on NYE on account of the bad blood between them, but that’s already been ruled out, so why not fight a giant? Choi doesn’t seem to care what happens as long as he gets to do a painfully awkward dance routine at some point in the evening. URdirt.com says the bout will be contested under K-1 rules, not MMA rules.
It adds to a card that also features MMA matches like Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki, Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Kiyoshi Tamura, Joachim Hansen vs. Gesias Calvancante, and a K-1 rules bout between Mark Hunt and Jerome LeBanner, among other action. It’s sure to be a night of fights that is entertaining for several different reasons.

He shouldn't be ranked in the top ten, regardless of what happens. He got his ass kicked in three out of four of his last fights; and now instead of a legitimate match, he's cashing in on the Japanese penchant for the bizarre. Cro Cop isn't nearly as good as he used to be.

Freak show? BRING IT ON! This will be goofy-good. I just watched the Fedor vs Cro Cop fight from PrideFC the other night. Simply one of the greatest MMA matches ever. It's sad to see Cro Cop has lost so much of his luster since that fight. While I would also like to see CC settle his score with that ball-buster Overeem, I'd just like to see him get a win under his belt.

C'mon. A little?freak-show now and then never hut anyone. Tamura is a pro-wrestler who was only ever in Pride to placate that contingent of the fanbase (which was a constant problem) and I look forward to Sakuraba submitting him. Aoki&Hansen usually put on good matches, and Hunt/Le Banner could well be an epic slugfest.

I love the freak-show element of this sport -- it just shows (or sometimes doesn't show) how dominant a fighter can be. An obvious would be Fedor fighting Choi (or Nog/Crocop on Bob Sapp, etc) it's a fighter fighting a man nearly a foot+ taller than him and a shit amount of weight more. These freak shows are a big stepping stone and I love watching them, of course.
