Freddie Roach Says The Fight Was Too Easy For Arlovski

(Is there any situation not improved by sound effects from Super Mario Bros.?  Props: MMA Scraps.)

Freddie Roach has figured out what went wrong for Andrei Arlovski on Saturday night.  It’s simple really.  Fighting the world’s best heavyweight proved too easy.  This bored Andrei, prompting him to try the flying knee that he was not awake long enough to finish:

"He made a young man’s mistake," Roach told MMAInsider backstage. "It was too easy for him. He was winning the fight handily I thought, controlling the fight like we planned. He got a little cocky, and he tried the flying knee from too far away, no setup, and he paid for it. … But Fedor swings hard, that’s his thing. He probably had his eyes closed, but he just got lucky, I think. If we had followed a more disciplined fight, and kept to the game plan, I think it was going to be easy."

I agree with Roach on one point: Arlovski did make a mistake.  As for the rest of his explanation, it’s just more evidence that Roach doesn’t understand the differences between MMA and boxing.  In the boxing world, a man who wins via one-punch knockout after landing fewer punches than his opponent until that point is almost always the beneficiary of a lucky punch.  Not so in MMA, especially when that man is Fedor.

You can say he got lucky.  You can accuse him of closing his eyes and hoping for the best.  But you can’t explain away his record.  Arlovski may have helped him out with that mental error, but a right hand like Fedor’s sure improves a man’s luck considerably.

Ben when are you going to begin Exclusive interviews with the fans? I want to weigh in on this fight and make a few points that obviously only I saw. Like Fedors demeanor going back into the ropes, hand positioning, planting the feet, and throwing 2, not just 1, overhand murderballs. The only reason the second didn't land is because Arlovski was sailing away.

I think someone earlier said that Arlovski's chin had no impact on the outcome of the fight at all: I believe the guy said "Fedor would have dropped Sasquatch with that punch.." LOL!! Question someone's chin when they get hit with a punch from a guy falling backwards, not when Fedor times a flying knee and winds up and connects the way he did.

I don't see how Fedor was ever in danger in this fight. People all over the forums are saying how AA was dominating, as if he was beating Fedor like a drum. Fedor was hit 5, maybe 6 times in the fight, all of which did little to no damage. Fedor was way more loopy with his punches, and AA was indeed precise, but I saw nothing that made me think that Fedor didn't have things under control. We discuss this thing as if AA won it, and Fedor needs to prove himself more. AA fucking lost, Roach. And he will probably never get a chance to fight Fedor again. Bring on Barnett and let's see a real MMA fight

Too me it looked like he was straight up baiting AA towards the end as Fedor kept backing his way up getting closer to the ropes.... I've also read some interviews on his training for this fight and he worked on alot of stuff for coming off the ropes.. AA likes to finish fights with that flying knee when someone rebounds off the ropes/cage...look at the ben rothwell fight. He played into FEDORS game and lost! Roach is a douche bag to be talking shit like this... FEDOR is the shit... stop making excuses ROACH.... Anyone else find it ironic this little fucker's name is ROACH? hahaha
  5. Phrosty Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 10:58

It looked to me that Fedor was laying back trying to draw AA in for just such a counter punch. If you watch the fight he was never really in trouble he seemed to keep going back, waiting to strike.

Man Freddie Roach 4 words from the bottom of my heart: Shut the fuck up. Your more crooked than Micheal J. Fox's signature.
  7. SocraticMethod Says:

Fedor doesn't close his eyes, he just a thin, flesh-colored membrane that rolls down as he strikes to protect his eyes from flying chunks of teeth and bloody beard folicles. Much like a shark.
  8. Me Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:05

Exactly what I said that little Roach was gonna say. But you know what? that's okay because if nothing else he is a great boxing coach and if we take what we can and apply it, then aren't we all better for it. I don't like everything he has to say, but I think in this situation there is more baby than bath water.
  9. Jugger Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:07

Absolute pussy move. Roach needs to let his fighter take his licks like a man. To come behind your fighter and make excuses for him shows a total lack of class. Even if what Roach is saying were undeniable fact (it's arguable at best, and totally wrong at worst) it's still a pussy move to voice it. A real man shakes the dust off and says "I will do better next time." A wannabe says, "I was winning, up until I lost."
  10. Sodak Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:08

haha that last comment was good. in fedors own words “ “As far as any punches that Andrei landed, I think all of them were just glancing blows and thy really didn’t hit me on the button and I didn’t feel them too much,” said Emelianenko through interpreter Steven Bash. Just based on feeling myself in the ring, I felt it was an even fight up to the point when I knocked him out, When he began his attack, he would open up a little bit. I had a feeling that he was going to make a mistake and I was just waiting to capitalize.”
  11. tusker Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:10

freddie has a point, he's just not making it very well. arlovski was winning the round, that much we can all agree on. if only he paced himself properly, kept throwing solid combos instead of stupid flying knees...who knows what would have happened. it always bothers me when people call bullshit on "lucky punches" (the argument could be made that ALL punches are lucky). and how come people never call submissions LUCKY? fedor won with a great punch. the scary thing is that it looked so effortless. the man is a beast...how anyone can dispute this is beyond me.
  12. mbuster Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:12

Arlovski did make a mistake. BUT, if Fedor's punch had missed, or even been slightly off-target, then Fedor might have gotten caught by the knee. Watch where Fedor's head was when he touched Andre's chin. That could have gone the other way, if Fedor wasn't so damned deadly accurate/powerful/Fedor-like.
  13. Old, Bald and Irish Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:20

"But Fedor swings hard, that's his thing. He probably had his eyes closed, but he just got lucky, I think." Oh...really. Well, Mr. Roach, you think ... W...R...O...N...G! There is one camera angle that they showed from behind Arlovski's back. Fedor took the kick, created distance, waited for Arlovski to come after him and then BOOM!...punch to the head. And you know what else the angle shows? Fedor's eyes WIDE OPEN waiting for Arlovski to come and get him. Not only did Arlovski make a mistake, but Fedor clearly baited AA into the knockout. this is exactly what fedor was looking for. That wasn't luck Mr. Roach, that was skill. ...and the incredible "win" power of the Fedor Technicolor Dream Sweater. BTW, I agree that Arlovski was winning the fight up until he got his head bashed. Also, it's true, EVERYTHING is funnier with Super Mario sounds. ...I watched that 12 times...just one more...yup, it's still funny!
  14. HulkSmash Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:26

AA was bored. Once again Freddy Roach proves he has the brain of a roach. I will admit that I was leaning toward Arlovski to take this one as I don't have alot of background knowledge on Fedor but to call that punch lucky is obviously the ramblings of a delusional idiot. Hey Freddy, smoke another big fattie and go back to sleep you fucking moron

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:40

when are people going to realize that Fedor is a Tactician and essentially waits for his opponent to make a mistake and then capitalizes on it? Freddie Roach is right, to an extent. AA was not patient and made a young man mistake, Fedor saw the opening and made him eat canvas.

  21. Munk Says:

    Mon, 01/26/09 - 11:57

if u watch Arlovski coming towards Fedor, his hands are lower, Fedor probably knew to strike hard and fast and get a good shot in by taking advantage of that moment, if Arlovski didnt have his hands that low as he was approachin Fedor, Fedor prob would have never went in like that.

The show was ok, and the fights were good, but good god who is in charge of announcer/interviewer auditions? Tito mangled just about everything he tried to say, but I can get over that. The two deushbags though.. mr. mafia and mr. throat cancer.. good god. Those 2 really took away from the show. If someone had put a bullet in both of those brains Saturday morning it would have been the best thing to ever happen to affliction. If any of you have this event on dvr or tvo... Look for the part where those 2 interview freddie roach about the fight and roach says that after AA beats fedor he will be competing for a boxing world champinionship. Right after he says that cancer throat (ferral?) gives the camera the fucking dumbest expression I've ever seen in my life. Then immediatley after he throws a punch at the camera then challenges the mafia man to fight. By far the most awkward wtf moment I've ever seen from a fight promotion. Seriously go back and find this part for a good laugh.

wtf is up with the whole "he was winning up to when . ." Doesnt matter who was winning or losing. We've seen fighters dominate round after round and not win cuz they got knocked our or submitted, thats how the MMA game goes. As much as I HATE to quote the Fast N the Furious, " Doesnt matter whether your win by and inch or a mile, winning is winning." Bottom Line: No matter how you dice it, no matter how many " Maybe, ifs, and would haves" you throw at it, the fact still remains; Fedor won & Freddie Roach is still a douchebag that needs to stick to boxing.

Oh and did anyone else notice Arlovski trying not to cry after his loss? I know it's bad form to laugh at a fighter getting emotional after preparing for so long and so hard, and then to go down to one mistake. But I'm a prick. HA HA!

friggin relax everybody. Why you people need to fuel the boxing vs. MMA war, is beyond me. Freddie Roach, by all accounts is a great guy and the fact that he is one of the best boxing coaches in the world while battling MS is rather amazing. He is mostly correct with what he is saying, AA was outboxing Fedor, till he got stupid. No, not a "lucky" punch. But, not the first guy to come up with excuses for his fighther. People do it all the time. If you listen to what he says, with an understanding that he is coming from a boxing background, you can understand where he is coming from. He obviously does not hate MMA, or he would not train AA. So, no reason to hate him so much. RELAX....boxing is not out to get you.

I'm going to weigh in on this one. Fedor didn't get lucky. Arlovski did make a young man's mistake, but Fedor also made a Veteran's savy move. He baited Arlovski. He acted hurt by that kick to the midsection, he backed into the corner, dropped his hands. He showed a reaction to something. Arlovski saw the normally ice cold emotionless robot, Fedor, react to a hit. He thought Fedor was in trouble, and he went for the kill. If you watch carefully Fedor even feinted like he was going to shoot in on Arlovski. It was a perfect set up by Fedor, and Arlovski fell for it hook line and sinker.

That in no way was lucky watch that in slow motion that was a beautiful counter and you could see how Fedor saw that opening. And LOL at AA owning him he landed an Whopping 9 more strikes LOL It isn't very hard to win a fight for 3 minutes...And it's pretty normal for the guy with the height and reach to control early standup with jabs and such none of what Arlovski landed did any damage it just sized him up.

Roach was right -- it WAS too easy for Arlovski. He was pretty much picking Fedor apart for the bulk of the fight, got over-confident, made a dumb, rookie mistake, and got caught. I am not saying that Arlovski was going to win, but Roach was absolutely right.
  36. HillBilly Says:

OK so you guys are out with your torches and pitchforks demanding Fedor fight AA again like AA somehow got jobbed. I'm not a huge fan of either fighter but what I saw was a man who could take his opponent's best shots for 3 minutes and still be fine vs a guy who spins through the air like some kind of bearded pinata the first time he gets tagged and is done.

If you call Arlovski giving Fedor quick jabs winning the fight then you need to take a look at Fedor's other fights, he's been in serious trouble in other bouts and ending with him demolishing his opponents.(Hong Man Choi,Kevin Randleman,Kazuyuki Fujita) He said he wasn't the best boxer and he never has been. Fedor's K.O. punch was faster than anything Arlovski dished out. Arlovski's takedown attempt was also a big mistake.

Freddie Roach --- are you crazy? an easy win -- are you insane? first of all, no fight against Fedor is ever going to be even anywhere near easy, second anyone in heavyweight division is going to be LUCKY to beat Fedor, if he ever dropped to light heavyweight, then he'd have some tougher challenges and have a more possiblity of losing, still is very possible he would dominate there too though -- Fedor best all around fighter in MMA

Regardless of lucky punch, or if Fedor was baiting him into a flying knee (which is absurd to think his game plan was to wait for a flying knee--Fedor has said he trains the same way, regardless of who is fighting) it is simple psychology--if you win it is because you did well, a loss is from some outside variable. Why would roach shit on his guy? If AA doesnt believe in his mind that he was winning, then he has no business fighting.
