Freddie Roach Says The Fight Was Too Easy For Arlovski

(Is there any situation not improved by sound effects from Super Mario Bros.?  Props: MMA Scraps.)

Freddie Roach has figured out what went wrong for Andrei Arlovski on Saturday night.  It’s simple really.  Fighting the world’s best heavyweight proved too easy.  This bored Andrei, prompting him to try the flying knee that he was not awake long enough to finish:

"He made a young man’s mistake," Roach told MMAInsider backstage. "It was too easy for him. He was winning the fight handily I thought, controlling the fight like we planned. He got a little cocky, and he tried the flying knee from too far away, no setup, and he paid for it. … But Fedor swings hard, that’s his thing. He probably had his eyes closed, but he just got lucky, I think. If we had followed a more disciplined fight, and kept to the game plan, I think it was going to be easy."

I agree with Roach on one point: Arlovski did make a mistake.  As for the rest of his explanation, it’s just more evidence that Roach doesn’t understand the differences between MMA and boxing.  In the boxing world, a man who wins via one-punch knockout after landing fewer punches than his opponent until that point is almost always the beneficiary of a lucky punch.  Not so in MMA, especially when that man is Fedor.

You can say he got lucky.  You can accuse him of closing his eyes and hoping for the best.  But you can’t explain away his record.  Arlovski may have helped him out with that mental error, but a right hand like Fedor’s sure improves a man’s luck considerably.

First of all GREAT SITE! After a conversation I had with a friend who said Fedor got lucky I decided to see what the internets were saying. I guess there are people out there who agree, but seems like you guys have some good ammo to retu n.

Fedor is a legend in his prime.

Regardless of lucky punch, or if Fedor was baiting him into a flying knee (which is absurd to think his game plan was to wait for a flying knee--Fedor has said he trains the same way, regardless of who is fighting) it is simple psychology--if you win it is because you did well, a loss is from some outside variable. Why would roach shit on his guy? If AA doesnt believe in his mind that he was winning, then he has no business fighting.

All Roaches should be SQUASHED.

roach needs to die in a fire...

seriously, if fedor didn't win by that lucky punch, then he would've just won by "the armbar...or whatever it's called".

fuck roach

LOL, thats a good one ---- that punch against arlovski was so dam fast i had to rewind it to see it, and could still barley see it --- Fedor is a beast
smcpherson25- January 27, 2009 at 10:20 am
Freddie Roach --- are you crazy? an easy win -- are you insane? first of all, no fight against Fedor is ever going to be even anywhere near easy, second anyone in heavyweight division is going to be LUCKY to beat Fedor, if he ever dropped to light heavyweight, then he'd have some tougher challenges and have a more possiblity of losing, still is very possible he would dominate there too though -- Fedor best all around fighter in MMA

If you call Arlovski giving Fedor quick jabs winning the fight then you need to take a look at Fedor's other fights, he's been in serious trouble in other bouts and ending with him demolishing his opponents.(Hong Man Choi,Kevin Randleman,Kazuyuki Fujita) He said he wasn't the best boxer and he never has been. Fedor's K.O. punch was faster than anything Arlovski dished out. Arlovski's takedown attempt was also a big mistake.

This sport is not about show it is about skill. If he wants to do show maybe he needs to go to WWE

HAHAHAHAHAHAH bearded pinata, haha
Fedor is a beast.

Its a classic move like Ali where he bait his opponent to get toe-to-toe on the rope with him...just what fedor did to arlovski...he bait arlovski to the rope and execute a pure single-punch KO. though it looks awkward but effective.
White Power my ass- January 26, 2009 at 11:40 pm
If that's the case then no one would train, fighters would just rely on their luck.
White Power my ass- January 26, 2009 at 11:39 pm
These fighters DON'T train for months just to get LUCKY.. come on..

Fedor has yet to prove himself as a legit badass. He is however, the luckiest fighter on the planet.
Blaphtome- January 26, 2009 at 9:31 pm
I've said it before and am saying it again. MMA needs to stay away from these aloof boxing douche bags. Guys like Roach, Shaw, and Juanito think they are better than this sport and will fuck our fighters good given half the chance. Ask Rampage or Kimbo.

Arlovski is a dumb as a stump. Fedor played him big time. Roach needs to stay out of MMA, unless he wants to take the time to learn how much different it is from boxing. Duh.

to quote peter griffin: "hey did u see that rock hit me? it was like--POW, RIGHT IN THE KISSAH!!! POW, RIGHT IN THE KISSAH!!! POW, RIGHT IN THE KISSAH!!! POW, RIGHT IN THE KISSAH!!! POW, RIGHT IN THE KISSAH!!!

"bearded pinata"....hahahahahahahaahahaha!
brooko- January 26, 2009 at 2:51 pm
I couldnt agree more. Fredy Roach should go crawl back under the rock hes been under(boxing), whats that guy smoking anyway. Fedor fights with his eyes closed? Well you must train with your mouth on Andreis pp cause you sure didnt help him in that fight.
HillBilly- January 26, 2009 at 2:40 pm
OK so you guys are

out with your torches and pitchforks demanding Fedor fight AA again like AA somehow got jobbed.

I'm not a huge fan of either fighter but what I saw was a man who could take his opponent's best shots for 3 minutes and still be fine vs a guy who spins through the air like some kind of bearded pinata the first time he gets tagged and is done.
Roach was right- January 26, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Roach was right -- it WAS too easy for Arlovski.

He was pretty much picking Fedor apart for the bulk of the fight, got over-confident, made a dumb, rookie mistake, and got caught.

I am not saying that Arlovski was going to win, but Roach was absolutely right.
