Gambling Addiction Enabler: ‘UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson’ Edition

As the dust settles from UFC 135, some of us out there must be itching to bet on fights that will not make us look like fools if we are wrong. Lucky for us, redemption lies around the corner, because this Saturday UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson goes down, and the odds are a hell of a lot closer than what we’re used to. Check out the fight odds below, then see if you can stomach our suggestions.

Main Card (courtesy of Best Fight Odds)
Dominick Cruz (-440) vs. Demetrious Johnson (+350)
Anthony Johnson (-180) vs. Charlie Brenneman (+158)
Matt Wiman (-210) vs. Mac Danzig (+175)
Pat Barry (-185) vs. Stefan Struve (+160)

Undercard (Courtesy of MMAValor)
Yves Edwards (-120) vs. Rafaello Oliveira (-120)
Michael Johnson (-240) vs. Paul Sass (+180)
Mike Easton (-130) vs. Jeff Hougland (even)
Shane Roller (-130) vs. T.J. Grant (even)
Josh Neer (-120) vs. Keith Wisniewski (-120)
Joseph Sandoval (-150) vs. Walel Watson (+120)

The Main Event: There is no denying the speed and agility of Dominick Cruz’s striking game, but look, judges love takedowns, and if there’s one thing “Mighty Mouse” can do, it’s take the fight to the ground. The champ has a penchant for letting his fights go the distance, and that only increases the likelihood that we will see an upset here, whether deserved or not. I wasn’t convinced; however, by Johnson’s victory over Miguel Torres. He showed excellent submission defense against Torres’ onslaught of attempts, but not much else that proves he can handle someone of “The Dominator’s” caliber. That said, a small bet with those odds won’t bankrupt you if there’s no return.

The Good ‘Dog: Considering most of the undercard fights are a pick ‘em at this point, I’d say your best bet is Charlie Brenneman, who’s recent routing of Rick Story showed that once he gets you down, you stay down. There’s no denying he can’t handle Johnson on the feet, but wrestling based fighters like Josh Koscheck and even the much smaller Rich Clementi were able to take “Rumble” down, so a bet on Brenneman seems pretty solid.

Some of you may be picking Struve for the upset due to Barry’s complete lack of ground game, but the real question here is whether or not Struve will be smart enough to take the fight to the ground. You’d think after his devastating knockout loss to Travis Browne he’d be in a hurry to do so, but if Junior Dos Santos and Roy Nelson haven’t taught him that lesson already, I don’t know if it can be taught.

Steer Clear: Both Matt Wiman and Mac Danzig have been struggling with consistency as of late. Danzig’s only win of relevance since winning the Ultimate Fighter 6 was his most recent knockout of recent UFC castaway Joe Stevenson. Wiman, on the other hand, has notched a couple impressive victories over Cole Miller and Thiago Tavares but is coming off a close decision loss to Dennis Siver back at UFC 132. Their first fight doesn’t add a ton to the mix, as it was Yves Lavigne’s screw up that ended it in the first place. I’d expect Wiman to take it, but I’m just gunna stay outta this one.

Official CagePotato Parlay: Barry + Brenneman + Edwards + Johnson.
20 bucks will get you a return of $186.46.

@Jonny5 - Because Brenneman is not really a top 7 WW, that's why. Any more stupid questions?
Deal_the_Seal- September 28, 2011 at 6:16 am
I predict no headkicks from Barry.

Oh and BTW I got Cruz/Brenneman at +209 so I'm not complaining just dumbfounded. I'll get $41.8 on my $20 bet... Rumble's best chance at winning this is his usual coming in overweight schtick. Then again I'm also for Cruz vs Benavidez 3 after Cruz wins on Saturday.
Jonny5- September 28, 2011 at 1:02 am
I don't understand how the hell top 7 WW Brenneman is an underdog to "Rumble" who is IMO not even top 15??? Can someone explain this to me please?? Beating Story>Hardy these days or am I just crazy?

^ For Real, little guys ain't gettin the love. I got Cruz, Rumble, Wiman and Barry. Cruz is just to strong for DJ to wrestle and to long to strike with, anothe UD for Cruz. Rumble wil KO the Spaniard, bet on it. Wiman will wrestle Danzig decision win for him and I think Barry can KO Struve, he's a sucker for the over hand right and Barry's coming in firing. Also, I'm glad to see Josh Neer back hope he can pick up a win I want to see him more often
Lesnarischamp- September 27, 2011 at 7:51 pm
I think this is a free card because they want more people to see Cruz as BW champ, so the next time he headlines a PPV it doesn't sell for as low as Cruz/Faber did, which I think did poorly for sales for what ended up as the best PPV of the year so far.
Lesnarischamp- September 27, 2011 at 7:47 pm
I'm going in a completely different direction. Thinking a parlay of Cruz/A. Johnson/Wiman/Neer is the way to go.

Cruz is way too elusive for Mighty Mouse, AJ has finally smartened up and realized he's a half-decent wrestler himself, Wiman because Danzig just sucks, and Neer because the other guy has lost to some chumps and was re-watching Neer/Tibau the other day, and Neer actually looked really good.

Initially I was also thinking Barry would beat Struve but I think that's more just because I dislike how they've continually promoted Struve as some future great. But with the big reach advantage and seeing Barry get dummied by Zombie Kongo, I think Struve can finally win a match against a non-shit opponent.

Roller and Wiman both overpower their opponents and win.

Pat Barry may be too small for Struve to take down, Barry wins.
Anhonestmoose- September 27, 2011 at 4:31 pm
Not that I'm complaining, but why is this a free card?
newdeal- September 27, 2011 at 4:09 pm
Brennemen will lose and despite all the nut hugging on this site Barry will also lose and get fired. Struve will probobly pull him into a flying triangle from the clinch
dim mak- September 27, 2011 at 3:22 pm
No respect for Johnson after he talked all that shit about wanting to "stand and bang" with Hardy, which apparently interprets to mean rolling around on the floor, throwing baby fists.

Though even that wasn't nearly as horrible as watching Clay Guida throw "shoulder strikes" against Pettis. Anyone who throws "shoulder strikes" should be burned alive.
Omar-Supreme- September 27, 2011 at 3:08 pm
I hope Barry makes Struve into wet spaghetti, like Browne did. I like Barry, he DESERVES to win.
DangadaDang- September 27, 2011 at 3:03 pm
Can I ask who "Rumble" has beaten that impressed everyone so much? Was it Luigi Fioravante or Tommy Speer? Kevin Burns maybe?
Sloppyspray- September 27, 2011 at 2:56 pm
@Skeletor and RwilsonR - I agree for solely b/c I hate fighters that get hyped for no reason besides they can hold someone down, except I kind of like the guy for the sheer fact that he took out and derailed the Story train, which was bullshit and I'm still pissed that Story got the win over Alves for holding him against the fence while only being successful on 5% of his takedown attempts.
JohnnySac- September 27, 2011 at 2:45 pm
This post just made me angry, unfortunately. No idea why you, and a heap of others, are all on Brenneman's "D". Johnson is a beast, and I hope he KTFO's of "The Spaniard".

Barry + Rumble + Olivera
RwilsonR- September 27, 2011 at 2:36 pm
@ skeleton - I agree, but I just can't ever hope Anthony Johnson wins. Unprofessional asshole can't ever make weight.
skeletor- September 27, 2011 at 2:01 pm
@El Famous Burrito-Thank You. This guy beat an other unimpressive fighter and everyone jumps on his nuts. If he stays with the top dogs at 70 he will be gone in three fights. It would have been two if he didn't fill in for a headliner.
El Famous Burrito- September 27, 2011 at 1:51 pm
@skeletor

Agreed. He's like Jon Fitch's less successful little brother, Ron Fitch.
RSparrow- September 27, 2011 at 1:49 pm
AGREED. Barry + A.Johnson + Edwards for me
skeletor- September 27, 2011 at 1:45 pm
God I hope Brennemen gets his ass kicked so his hype will die and he never makes it to the paid portion of a PPV card.
