Gary Shaw With More Wacky Kimbo Comparisons

(Shaw gazes upon the wonder that is Kimbo.)

Apparently it’s not enough to make the erroneous Kimbo Slice-Mike Tyson comparison anymore. With Elite XC’s big event just a day away, Live Events President Gary Shaw is kicking it up a notch. Now Kimbo isn’t just the Mike Tyson of MMA, he’s the Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, too. Shaw made the case at yesterday’s final presser in New York City:

“The first time I introduced Kimbo, I was introducing him as a YouTube sensation with over 10 million hits. I knew he was a star then. I knew he could be a superstar. There are great basketball players, but nothing like Michael Jordan. There are great golfers, but nothing like Tiger Woods. Every once in a while there is someone who crosses over that line to a superstar. You just know.

“When Mike Tyson walked in, the place erupted. When someone else walked in there were only a few claps. Well, Kimbo Slice is a superstar. He is probably the most recognizable name in all of MMA. On May 31, when he gets in the cage, he will be the single most known face of MMA.

“(UFC’s) Dana White will be at home watching us on CBS. When he rips Kimbo Slice, it only proves he is an idiot. When he says that BJ Penn is the best fighter in the whole family and can knock out Kimbo Slice, the DEA should raid his home. I know BJ Penn would never say that and is probably embarrassed. Although BJ Penn is the best fighter in the family, he’s not the smartest Penn (JD, his brother, is an executive at EliteXC).

“Kimbo has a complex side to him as well. He is intelligent. He is well-read, well-versed. He is street through and through. He has not forgotten where he came from. On the bus ride over here, he told me he bought two 26-inch TVs and is going to give them to someone needy in the work area in Newark. He wants to leave Newark with a positive impression. It not only says something about Kimbo but the MMA family. I am telling you, Kimbo Slice is real.”

That’s got to be the first time the statement, “He is well-read,” was followed by, “He is street, through and through.” Shaw went on to reveal that Kimbo will use his fight purse to adopt and care for a bunch of cute, furry animals, and then will return to his homemade laboratory to find a cure for cancer before being named Poet Laureate of the United States — so fuck you, Charles Simic.

Kimbo himself was slightly more reserved and, one imagines, also kind of embarrassed by Shaw’s antics:

“I don’t have much to say. I want to thank CBS and EliteXC. CBS rules.

I don’t feel like all the pressure is on me to perform a certain way. Not at all.

I don’t underestimate any fighter. Just because he has lost a couple fights, doesn’t mean he isn’t going to come out strong.’’

It’s not the coming out strong that has been Thompson’s problem. It’s the coming out strong and then going down hard that he needs to work on.

Totally agree.

I won't even watch the Kimbo circus most likely all the good fighters on are before him so nice of them.
Shady- May 29, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Let's face it this whole thing tomorrow night is about as lame as it gets. A bunch of circus side show freaks in a ring punching it out....yay. I'd rather watch Kalib Starnes step into the ring with, well, just about anyone than waste a single brain cell watching this crap tomorrow night.

shaw is clearly, clearly incredibly unintelligent. simply. if he's trying to hype up the fight, he does it poorly, since anyone who tracks mma calls bs on him. the man is a joke.
VV- May 29, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Kimbo is overhyped. here's my problem with his whole PR team. Kimbo is still early in his MMA career, he defiently could be good. I mean he has skills and he's a big guy. No doubt. Buuut he's still too inexperienced. He should have kept training and declined all this hype until he got good enough. This will just make his Career very short-lived. He'll end up losing as soon as anyone with a over .50 record comes in. It's sad really. And yeh 2 26" tvs? fuck off Kimbo. He makes more money than half the people in the UFC (keith gets 10,000 to fight wanderlei? wtf?), and he spends what 1000$ to buy 2 26' tvs. What a cheap mother fucker.
VV- May 29, 2008 at 11:27 pm
haha, yeh actually IMO Brock Lesner would destroy Kimbo. Now im not saying Lesner is amazing, he's far from it. But he is an amazing wrestler and is a lot stronger than Kimbo. Sure Kimbo can box, but I'll bet all the 32$ in my wallet that Kimbo would not last standing up too long. Did you guys see how easily Lesner threw down Mir? it didnt even look like it took effort, more like he just leaned towards Mir's Leg and he flew downward. That being said Kimbo would get embarrased by almost every Heavyweight the UFC has. Especially Minatauro. Hell, Tim Silvia would destroy him (If he was still in the UFC and not soaking in the $800,000 he got to get his ass kicked by Fedor, then again it'll be a good fight).

two 26" tvs? 26 inches? nigga, you serious?
MKXii- May 29, 2008 at 7:57 pm
"They should send Brock Lesnar over to EliteXC and destroy Kimbo."

Anonymous- May 29, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Elite is going to have to step up the quality of opponent for Kimbo soon. They are going to have no choice. Bottom line, the milk is going to run out of the Kimbo cow unless he fights (and beats) someone of at least marginal notoriety. While, it's understandable that they want to bring him along slowly and choose his opponents carefully, after 4 pro fights, it will be time to step it up. Perhaps a Frank Mir type???

Gary Shaw looks like a major athlete is his track suit.

He must think he is the Hugh Hefner of the MMA.
whatismmma- May 29, 2008 at 6:13 pm
GAry shaw's track suit's commentsmust have been made when he was high like Kimbo in street fights. Elite XC is going to ste back the sport tommorrow, which will be sad.
Tom K- May 29, 2008 at 5:55 pm
There's a clear distinction between being "the single most known face of MMA" for legitimate reasons (amazing record from fighting top competition) or illegitimate reasons (beating up people in street fights). One might say that OJ Simpson is one of the best known football players in the universe, although not for the right reasons. Give me true mixed martial artists -- not one dimensional punchers who are being built up to fail.
BIG CHRIS- May 29, 2008 at 5:36 pm
CBS needs to remake the a-team and cast Kimbo for the Mr. T part.....that would be sweet!!! oh and this fight card is gonna suck but I am watching anyways cause it's free.....

and in case you forgot because of the EliteXC circus going on there will be a legitimate fight going on on Sunday....why aren't we seeing more about that one....GO URIJAH!!!

Ben G

Dude I hope if you were at the presser you stood up and said something along the lines of "Gary Shaw you are a complete idiot and to all the press here that is new to MMA I'd like to let you all know that this man is terribly worng if not delusional"
Trsigley- May 29, 2008 at 4:54 pm
I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Kimbo for getting tied up with this outfit. In the short run they may make him some cash, but they are cheating him out of his career in the longrun.
Tertio- May 29, 2008 at 4:30 pm
I think Shaw is under too much pressure at the moment. He doesnt make a whole lot of sense.

I think it would be in his best interest to stop flamming White and concentrate on his own show. Something is telling me that its not gonna be an immediate success.
Boneman- May 29, 2008 at 4:27 pm
I think what ever illness Dana White has is slowly eating at Shaws DNA....

I know they are losing money...But Cmon Gary...Please hire a real PR team...!

I can't beleive CBS is letting this fool speak on their behalf....

All we can hope is that he treats his fighters better than the UFC does once they start to earn a profit!
nick- May 29, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I've never even watched an EliteXC event and I already hate Gary Shaw way more than Dana White.
Cory- May 29, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Thompson will not beat Kimbo because he has already been paid to throw the fight. There is no way Shaw would invest this much hype in a guy and have him lose to a can like Thompson.
Vrax- May 29, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Oh Shaw, you just have no idea. Every time you mention Dana, you're advertising for him.

The UFC refused the CBS deal because of two things. Everyone knows that it's low-money deal for the promotion aside from sponsorships. That's reason one, the thing everyone has heard about.

Reason two is that EliteXC is doing free advertising for the UFC. Huh? You might say, well let me explain. First of all Gary Shaw mentions Dana White and the UFC at every press conference he does. That's great advertising! Secondly, if people like the CBS broadcast they're going to seek out more MMA fights to watch. Where do you think they're going to find those fights?

Zuffa knows exactly where new fans are going to wind up -, and UFC in-demand. Sure, they'll tune in for the next EliteXC card too, but they're going to notice the difference in athletes and production. And then many of them are going to buy the UFC's next pay per view event.

Dana's laughing all the way to the bank.
MMA Enthusiast- May 29, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Agreed, BJ Penn would destroy Kimbo no problem. I don't care if Kimbo is has over a 50 pound weight advantage. They should send Brock Lesnar over to EliteXC and destroy Kimbo.
The Survivalist- May 29, 2008 at 3:49 pm
What happens next if Kimbo get's KTFO by Thompson? Exhibition match against a celeb? or a bear?
Gary Shaw's track suit- May 29, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Kimbo is the best and toughest MMA fighter out there. He would kick BJ's ass, whoop GSP and annihilate Anderson Silva. Fedor might take him to the 2nd round before getting knocked out with Kimbo's signature watermelon punch.

Dana white has zero talent in the UFC now that Tito is gone.

Elite XC's real competition: Vince McMahon and the WWE
Douchebaggery- May 29, 2008 at 3:39 pm
would Bj kick Kimbo's ass? huge size and power difference and I think Bj might try and stand toe to toe with Kimbo which is probably not a good idea.
Jeffro- May 29, 2008 at 3:20 pm
BJ Penn would kick Kimbo's ass. I wonder what the betting line would look like? Gary Shaw is spending way too much time hyping Kimbo. He should spend more time on his wardrobe.
