MMA Fighter Challenges People to Punch Him in the Face, Everyone Fails

George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Lauzon Booked for UFC 123 in Detroit

According to a Sherdog report published yesterday, UFC lightweight contenders George Sotiropoulos (13-2, 6-0 UFC) and Joe Lauzon (19-5, 6-2 UFC) will meet in a pivotal matchup at UFC 123 (November 20th, Auburn Hills). Riding a six-fight win streak including decision victories this year over Kurt Pellegrino and Joe Stevenson, Sotiropoulos would move very close to title contention with an impressive win over Lauzon. The fight would come less than three months after Lauzon’s recent destruction of Gabe Ruediger at UFC 118, which helped him rebound from a lopsided decision loss against Sam Stout at UFC 108.

The Sotiropoulos/Lauzon matchup contradicts an optimistic report in the Sydney Morning Herald that had George taking on BJ Penn or Kenny Florian in his next outing. Though the UFC could have been considering a matchup with Florian, Ken-Flo plans on sharpening his wreslting until the spring.

Related: Tyson Griffin vs. Nik Lentz is also being targeted for UFC 123, and Clay Guida has his next opponent set; he isn’t naming names, but it’s a "big one" against a guy with "ALOT of power in his hands."

Pleased with the complement. Go the Aussie. I’d have though Nate Diaz will be a good complement. Both boxing orientated striking and first class jitz. Gives either of these an enormous increase in the div.

Lauzon's gonna snag that hype, frig the haters, yo.

I can't see George losing this bout and would not mind him getting a title shot. I hope that doesn't mean that Lauzon is up as a title contender too. Destroying a can and an unlikely win against George should not equal a title shot.

Dana did say they were gonna make an annual trip down there, and I couldn't think of a better fighter to have on the card. I fucking love Elvis Sinosic - nicest guy in the entire sport - but he and Perosh can't be the only Aussie's on the card. G-Sot will sell big down there.

@ RwR, very good point, If they give George a title fight in Aussie, they're gonna need a fucking big arena, that will sell out in minutes, that would be so sweet, Big georgie taking the strap in front of a home crowd Wooooo

I think George will tear those big flapping ears off of Joe, this is a great fight.
PERPATRAITOR- September 9, 2010 at 11:52 am
unfair to george. i don't know why he gets match shafted. it takes forever for this guy to climb up. i think the top dogs are scared to fight him.

Good matchup. I, too, would give the nod to Sotiropoulos, but it should be close. Lauzon's definitely no slouch. Winner gets KenFlo then Twinkletoes, if he's still champ by then.

Good observation RWR.

I think this could be a good fight, especially the first two minutes when Lauzon comes out in beast mode. After that, G-Sot will take over and start to dominate.

But I kinda feel bad for George. He should be fighting the number one contender. I can't figure out if Dana and Joe Silva want George to fight for a title, so they are giving him a fight he likely won't lose, or if they don't want to give him a title shot, because Lauzon certainly isn't close enough to the top to guarantee a title shot with a win over him. George should be fighting BJ, Florian, or Evan Dunham.

edit: now that I think about it, they are definitely giving G-Sot a fight he can win, and saving him for a LW title fight in Australia in the Spring. Since neither Edgar or Maynard sell out arenas on their own, they prob figure they can sell a bunch of tickets in Australia with George in a title fight there.

This is gonna be a great fight - both Lauzon and Sotoropolis bring it!

Sotiropolous/Lauzon is a great fight, I think.

and I love Guida. Gomi, maybe? That could be a fight of the year! I'd love to see Clay get some more top-contender fights.

Except that Diaz is a welterweight now.
This is a great fight though...

Happy with the match up. Go the Aussie. I'd have though Nate Diaz would have been a good match up. Both boxing orientated striking and top notch jitz. Would give either of them a huge boost in the div.

MoTropolis- September 9, 2010 at 7:45 am
Thats bullshit if winning this fight doesnt get George a title shot.
