GIF of the Day: Did Liz Carmouche Tap Out to Marloes Coenen’s Second-Round Standing Guillotine Saturday Night?

An interesting conspiracy theory from Saturday night’s women’s welterweight title bout between champion Marloes Coenen and challenger Liz Carmouche was that Carmouche actually tapped out to Coenen’s tight standing guillotine in the second round.

We decided to give the video a second look and we took the liberty of making an animated gif of the sub attempt. It’s a moot point since Coenen was able to secure a fight-ending triangle in the fourth round to retain the strap, but had Carmouche won, Team Golden Glory may have had a decent case for an appeal.

Check out the gif and decide for yourself whether or not “Gorilla” pulled a Sonnen.

Tap or not, I think that was a helluva war. Marloes Coenen is one scrappy sub artist. She took a beating and never gave up. At the end in the replay you could see the tap with her right hand after the strike attempt.

Anyone defending a belt should be making a LOT more than 10k. Thats fucking robbery. You work hard for a title and get shit on for pay? C'mon strikeforce pony up for your performers!

Hard to say, but if someone is about to tap out in a title fight, and their first name isn't some stupid derivative of a normal name, then chances are they will tap out very deliberately and there won't be any such controversy.

I saw it live and asked myself if she had just tapped, then reasoned that if you have to ask, then she didn't tap.

Chael Sonnen is a douche. Stop encouraging him. He's bringing a pro wrestling vibe into our sport and that will bring more eyes, which will only encourage the same sort of bullshit that made most of us stop watching WWF in the first place. If you sincerely love MMA, you won't give cheaters and loud-mouths like him the attention that they crave.
