(“Welcome my friends to the show that never ends. I’m serious. I’m gonna ride this money train until the wheels fall off.”)
Even when it’s someone else’s turn in the spotlight, it seems that Chael Sonnen has a way of stealing some of their thunder.
Take yesterday’s open workouts for Saturday night’s UFC on Fox 1 event in Chicago. Though Sonnen wasn’t in front of the camera delivering his best Ric Flair impersonation, he was still attracting most of the attention behind the scenes.
The Sonnen Circus was in full gear as MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani interviewed Chicago-based heavyweight Mike Russow. Putting on a tumbling clinic for the media, who lapped it up while snapping photos and rolling camera to catch the display for posterity, Sonnen demonstrated why he’s one of the most polarizing personalities in MMA.

Some love him for his expertly crafted WWE-esque persona and some hate him for his “look at me” attention whoring, but the fact is, Chael’s name is on everyone’s lips, which makes him a bonafide draw.

in case you don't REALLY know his name is Ariel Helwani.
dudes been around for years now. where the hell have you been?
Around 98% of all CP articles are now essentially "Lulz Chael Sonnen/Ronda Rousey r teh lulziest evahz!!!!!!"
.
Sonnen and Ariel need to take that act on the road!
.
BEST GIF of the new year!

@Get Off Me Says: - right on all points.
.
@IronClad - I am with you. I'd pay bit money to see him slip in and pull off that tumbling exhibition off with either Bisping or Silva in the foreground doing a serious interview.
.
Wrong. A quick crash course in WWE persona.
Heel=bad guy
Babyface=good guy
Chael is neither, he would be at best, a heel that can't draw heat, which is worthless in professional wrestling. He has more fans than haters on CP.
Can he hype a fight? Yes.
Can anyone really say that it was because of Chael not Anderson Silva that their first fight drew a good number? No
When Sonnen fought Stann, did the ratings go through the roof? No
Did Sonnen make a concious decision to act like something he is not after the Okami fight? Yes
Was Chael more entertaining in interviews post Okami fight? Yes
Is he hilarious? Sometimes
Is Chael a trash talk rip off artist? Yes
Is Chael the toughest match up for Silva right now? Yes
Is Chael injecting testosterone? Yes
.
Chael is a mixed bag at best, ultimately his fighting is what will lead him to success in this sport. I believe he can beat Bisping, but I do not believe he can beat Anderson Silva.
