Gilbert Yvel Reportedly Signs With the UFC

(This photo was taken directly after Gilbert stomped a waitress to death for bringing him a Bud instead of a Bud Light. Photo courtesy of CombatLifestyle.)

He may be infamous for biting, eye-gouging, and referee-assaulting, but that doesn’t mean Gilbert Yvel wouldn’t be a welcome addition to the UFC. Buried in a report about Lil’ Nog’s recent signing, MMA Weekly claims that Yvel is on the list of fighters who have been picked up by Zuffa after the collapse of Affliction. The 33-year-old Dutch heavyweight — who sports a record of 36-13-1 with one no-contest, and has claimed all of his wins by stoppage — most recently scored a grisly knockout over Pedro Rizzo at June’s "Ultimate Chaos" show. Before that, he got crushed by Josh Barnett at Affliction: Day of Reckoning, which snapped a seven-fight win streak.

It’s a mildly surprising acquisition, since Yvel’s poor ground game has always prevented him from being an elite-level threat. But it makes sense on a number of levels. Obviously, Yvel is entertaining whether he wins, loses, or gets disqualified, so who wouldn’t want to pick him up as a mid-level gatekeeper? (Heath Herring can’t take all the beatings himself, can he?) More importantly, the signing blocks Strikeforce from adding a name-fighter to its own heavyweight division. And if Yvel can cut to 205, he can be part of the "Last Call" season of The Ultimate Fighter that as of now exists only in my head.

Be warned, Steve Mazzagatti: If Dana White calls you to make amends, and offers to let you work a heavyweight bout later this year, it might be a trap.

watch gilbert come in and start knocking out these so called "elite" UFC heavies.

He goes from a C level fighter to B level just by signing with the UFC, nice

The UFC is signing every 'name' out there. If your'e a known fighter and haven't got a call from Zuffa, it's gotta be a little bit of a blow to your self-worth.

As far as Yvel goes, any man that tried to remove Don Frye's retinas in the ring should be barred from entry into the US.

Man everyone is against the WWE antics. The terrible thing about WWE is that it's scripted and fake. Not the antics. It's entertaining for the hillbillies that think it's real.

but... tell me you wouldn't want to see real fights with those kind of antics...

Brock vs Koshcheck and Fitch in a handicap match.

Tag team matches...

okay.... bad idea. haha

I wanna see a rematch of Kongo and Yvel.

Two awesome strikers. And i think Kongo would win the rematch! Make it happen dana

Let's see, Dana vocally hates a certain referee and now they bring in a guy with little restraint when it comes to officiating. Hmmm...

If kongo and Gilbert fight, someone is leaving with there testicles smashed.
TheVoiceOfReason- August 20, 2009 at 8:17 am
How can a douchebag that punches a referee even be allowed to fight any more? Respect and honor are on the way out, and WWF-like antics are the way in... :(

I think Dana's plan is to snap up everyone he can, let them lose a few times in the UFC, and then release them so Strikeforce can have them. Then he can say that Strikeforce is made up of a bunch of losers that couldn't cut it in the UFC.

Not only is the UFC keeping a bunch of fighters out of Strikeforce, they are stacking the heavyweight division up. with TUF 10 and the death of affliction, theres gonna be a lot of exciting fights in the near future. Not to mention Shane Carwin and Cain Velazquez. Reguarding the UFC's heavyweight division, i feel like a giddy little child on christmas! WAHOO

i never thought i would see this guy in the octagon. watching this dude is like watching Tyson late in his career. theres a good chance he will lose but just as good a chance he'll do something crazy.

Yvel + Crocop = good fight

Gotta side with 'origen' on this one.

While I was impressed that could come up with some effective striking on the Babyfat Assassin while being mounted, the average UFC heavyweight has got a waaay better ground game than Yvel.

Gilbert, learn some BJJ really fast, or it's gonna be 3 fights and then Dana will be showing you the door.

By the way, this is OBVIOUSLY Dana White removing one more viable Strikeforce heavyweight from the market.

Gilbert gonna get owned by the ufc heavyweights. All they have to do is mout him like Roid Barnett and pound away. Then Gilbert's gonna get made and poke Herb Dean in the eye.

I like this fedor strikeforce thing UFC is signing all kinds of guys. could this be the end of the TUF bums? and i heard militech is back your old man theory might be right on.
Marcer- August 20, 2009 at 6:39 am
I want to see him fight Kongo. No reason, really.
Fedor vs. Bas- August 20, 2009 at 6:34 am
Hahaha, the first thing I thought about when i saw the title was: Dana White is going to set Steve Mazagatti up to get kicked in the head.

This guy really should not licensed to fight in any state.
Wyatt- August 20, 2009 at 6:29 am
F*ck this guy. He shouldn't be getting paid to fight ever again.
Soda Popinski- August 20, 2009 at 6:26 am
and by 'reportedly' you mean 'who the hell knows', right?
