MMA Video Tribute: 9 ‘Falling Tree’ Knockouts

Gomi, Ishida, Sato, Fujii In Action This Weekend at ‘Shooto Tradition Final’

(Megumi Fujii: 52 kilos of walking death.)

Yeah, we pretty much slept on this card since mentioning it once like two months ago — that’s our bad, and we’re just going to have to live with it — but Shooto Tradition is having its star-studded "Road to 20th Anniversary Final" show this Sunday in Tokyo, featuring lightweight PRIDE legend Takanori Gomi, unstoppable female fighter Megumi Fujii, and more big names. Unfortunately it won’t televised in the U.S., but we promise to get all the best fight vids up by Monday. Nightmare of Battle passes along the compete lineup, which is after the jump, and quite sick-looking…

Shooto Lightweight Title Fight (3 5-minute rounds)
9. "Lion" Takeshi Inoue vs. Rumina Sato [Ed. note: Why does a guy on a three-fight losing streak in Shooto get to fight for a title? Because one time he did this, that's why.]

Non-Title Fights (3 5-minute rounds)
8. Takanori Gomi vs. Shooto World Welterweight (154-lb) Champion Takashi Nakakura
7. Shooto Pacific Rim Welterweight Champion Yusuke Endo vs. Willamy Chiquerim
6. Mitsuhiro Ishida vs. Mizuto Hirota
5. Kenichiro Togashi vs. Tetsuji Kato
4. Kotetsu Boku vs. Yutaka Ueda

Non-Title Fights (2 5-minute rounds)
3. "Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura vs. Takumi Ota
2. Megumi Fujii vs. Choi Em Bun
1. Sol Kyung-Pyo vs. Takesuke Kume

Forgive the less seasoned question, but what happens in a two round fight if there's a 1/1 split at the end of regulation? Is it like the Ultimate Fighter where they have a tiebreaker round?
  2. MMA Wannabe Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:31

Shame Megumi isn't bigger so Strikeforce could throw her into the Cyborg/Carano mix. She has some slick skills
  3. superman Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:32

I dont like this woman fighting, its not right. Is it bad that I think that?
  4. Blumpkin Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:36

yes its bad, now give me a blumpkin...

obi: i think the wec would be a better place to start... and maybe a few on ultimate fight nights... so the average joe gets some exposure to it

I'm not that informed on the history of women's MMA, but why do you guys think the UFC doesn't add women to the undercard? Is it really because of what Dana said about not having enough women fighters?
  8. sarah Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:41

@superman - it's not necessarily bad that you think that, but you might want to ask yourself *why* you think it's not right. even as a chick, i have a few problems with women fighters, but they're basically the same problems i had with really early UFC fights: there aren't enough fighters, the skill levels vary too much making for unfair matchups, and right now it's too much of a gimmick or freak show. i think if more women get interested in mma, and if the fight organizations begin accepting it, it could be really awesome. at the same time, i think it will probably always be a male-dominated sport.
  9. T1 Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:43

Santos vs Gina would be a good opening night fight coupled with say, Baszler vs some other grappling oriented fighter. Stand-up + a ground war. Only reason Dana probably hates the idea of woman's MMA so much is that he didn't think of it first / didn't get there soon enough / is dumb? eh, eh?
  10. Mdollas Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:44

WOW!!! 4:31 Into that video, She shoots in for the toe hold!!! Wow. That takes some talent right there. Her opponent was even cheating trying to grab her top to get some leverage to pull out of it. Beautiful Submission. Girls got game. Props To Megumi Fujii.
  11. Poo Flinger Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:44

Female fights rock. Women usually don't have knock out power, so if you get two ferocious fighters they can have a sustained brawl for three rounds. ^^^^^ As previously posted, when there is more opportunity for women to fight professionally the skill level will go up. But I see good potential for entertaining fights here.
  12. PHELPS Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:45

Women fighters tend to turn the casual fan off. UFC will always be business first so thats a huge issue for them. And, yeah there aren't that many women fighters that you could have a solid weight class system to fill the ranks of any organization.
  13. SCM Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:46

I bet Dana will never have women in the ring in the UFC. The fighting is alright but it is kind of gnarly. I cant really explain it. They need to have that chick from that show, "Human Weapon" that knows Krav-maga. She would woop some cyborg ass. Old Bald & Irish, that is a horrible idea.. I hope you were being sarcastic. But i would like a shirt. And thank you Ben G. for reading my email and responding. Nice to know you want to see HAL get beat haha... You dudes are tight.
  14. i.had.to.register Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:46

"Old" should be banned for his "first" post. Fujii has great submissions.
  15. MMA Wannabe Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:46

@sarah and vic_bot Yeah, I'd definitely like to see more woman's mma, and there are plenty of women martial artists, just not enough attention to that "mixed" part of it yet. I can't be the only one that thinks Carano/Cyborg should be a main event.
  16. T1 Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:46

aaaaaand ban. (in response to Blumpkin)
  17. Lucidity Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:48

Fujii is a monster. I would like to see Gomi get back that passion he used to have for fighting.
  18. PHELPS Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:48

Probably. What do you think the lines would be for Carano/Cyborg?
  19. UFC IN CALGARY ALBERTA CANADA Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:55

Gomi is a bum..he was a bum then & he is a bum now.... "is that all you wanted me to type Nick?.....okay..I'm done"
  20. S?M Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:55

what the hell? Old, Bold and Irish got banned for saying 'first'??? That's a load of crap. With that bs going on it was much better before all this login crap, even when CAPS LOCK HAL and TUF Guy were around. Although HAL was kinda cool, i leked the guy. But OBI is probablu pissed right now, unban him!!
  21. LoneWolf Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:58

Seriously Dana "dumbass" White missed out on a great opportunity to expand the WEC with Women fighters.....That would have been incredible. I seriously can't wait for the MMA world to open there minds to more woman fighters.....Woman or man, who cares...its takes one tough MOFO to get into the ring/octagon and test themselves. Props!
  22. sarah Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 01:59

@SCM that wasn't OBI, that was someone who stole his name. which is probably why he was banned.
  23. Dana White is a HOMO Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:02

    Right on!!
  24. S?M Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:02

@sarah if it was not OBI, who was that?? Still it's gonna get so bad here if people will be banned sor saying 'first' and other harmless stuff, screw that.
  25. UFC IN CALGARY ALBERTA CANADA Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:02

and just so every one knows... the .... at the end of my name, is for UFC IN CALGARY ALBERTA CANADA. Thats all you brains down in the USA who look a t a map and think Alaska is an Island beside Hawaii in the Pacific. I still got $10 that says half the country, including Miss South Carolina, has no clue of where this is..... you will though, as soon aa my buds Dana stops looking a freaking Toronto, and puts a bloody fight here! hit it..Nah!
  26. ken-mura Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:08

I think I like Satoko Shinashi better than Fugii.
  27. ben Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:08

@ SCM:sarah's right, it was an imposter.  The real OBI is staying away until all the bugs are worked out.
  28. Blumpkin Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:11

@ SCM i agree that the first's shouldn't get banned... everyone gets tempted sometimes.
  29. Tall White and Working Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:13

@ben- it has been pointed out that there might be 2 scm on the site. they have two varying membership terms. FYI. i like the structure of the rules here.
  30. Anhonestmoose Says:

the first few days of this registering thing are gonna b hilarious. trust me on that, i am honest after all.
  31. Anhonestmoose Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:19

i'm so confused! why can't everyone just be honest?
  32. Tall White and Working Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:24

The Honest Moose was right. Women MMA is kinda like the WNBA. Differant set of skills and more technical, but not as explosive or exciting. It just doesn't do anything for me.
  33. Half Amazing Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:25

War Mega Megu!!! I think she could take Gina even though shes only 115. By the way, good look on requiring users to register. The old system made the comments unreadable because of all the shenanigans going on.
  34. SCM Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:27

Youll see that you will get banned.
  35. SCM Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:29

Thank the lord. THANK YOU! Seriously though i think that was Caps lock as the imposter on my name.
  36. Anhonestmoose Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:31

wow, i actually just got done watching the HL and megumi is impressive
  37. greenseed Says:

    mdollas: morgan is that u?
  38. hlebtastic Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:41

Wow, its already working. The comments section is readable again. That being said women's mma has a long way to go before it is on the ufc. and as it should be. There aren't enough fighters to sustain elite competition. There aren't enough names to power a weight class. And probably most importantly the weight classes have some bugs that need to be worked out as evidenced by both cyborg and carano up to this point. Women's mma is really a work in progress at this point.
  39. Mdollas Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:45

I love the sport of MMA, and to me, technique is just as impressive as explosive power, or huge takedowns. With the proper marketing the UFC could make any casual UFC fan interested, by highlighting the technical skills of female fighters. Womens MMA is at a point where it needs support, to encourage more women to begin taking up the sport, thus filling the gaps in weight classes, and hopefully elevating the level of Womens MMA.
  40. Anhonestmoose Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 02:52

but at the same time, if there are few really talented fighters and they run out of high level competition to showcase it could be popular for a little while and then simply fall into obscurity. if women's mma is going to become big it has to have more talent and at least one complete division that they can put on every other card or something.
  41. belou Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 03:27

wow, i almost fell asleep watching her double-leg/armbar technique. It would not take much to train for that, why does win?
  42. ?CM Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 03:43

wow, thank you very much Ben. I am really greatful that u banned that asshole that pretended to be me. I am now forever in your debt, ask whatever you want and I will give to you. Thank you man!
  43. Fight Fan Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 04:43

I understand most are saying there are not enough women fighters to fill a competitive weight class. But even if there were, it would still be unwatchable. Women's MMA is like women's basketball. No wait, it's even worse.
  44. Wade Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 04:52

Mega Megu is a monster. Pretty sure she can destroy guys in similar weight classes.
  45. SCM Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 05:24

Wow another imposter. Your fucking sick bro.
  46. ?CM Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 05:47

no you stupid loser, it's me again. Go watch TV or something, Sezam Street is on, your favorite show. I'll comment here for now and you can't do anything about it. And stop pretending to be me idiot, i am the real SCM.
  47. ?CM Says:

    Fri, 05/08/09 - 05:49

oh, by the way. Women in sports = epic fail, and that includes mma.
  48. Armbreaker Says:
