Gratuitous Beatdown of the Day: GSP vs. Sean Sherk
Since we recently went back in time to celebrate one of Thiago Alves's past triumphs, it seems only right that we do the same for Georges St. Pierre as we build up to their title fight at UFC 100. At UFC 56 GSP met Sean Sherk, who had never been finished in his pro career. Looking back now it seems kind of absurd that he ever competed at welterweight; his reach is a hindrance even at 155. GSP not only outstruck him on the feet, but also just plain outwrestled him, much to Sherk's surprise. It's not quite as sexy as dropping an opponent with one big bomb, but it's methodical and it's dependable. Makes you wonder, will it be GSP's wrestling ability that makes the difference against Alves, or will he have a harder time getting someone his own size down to the mat?

Watching that fight is an interesting reminder how different GSP is as a fighter now. Back then he was skilled, but didn't have near the tools he has shown in his recent fights. It's hard to say how good Alves is because he hasn't fought enough elite fighter in the division to say how good he is. I still say he should have to beat Fitch before getting to GSP.

GSP won't be taking alvez down so easily. This will be the first time gsp has to fight someone that could very well be stronger than he is. Will be interesting to see how he fairs without the strength and size advantage. I think Alvez is the superior striker if he can keep the fight on the feet gsp could be goin to sleep.

GSP gnp the whole match, won't even be close. Alves has great striking and brutal leg kicks, but, he couldn't finish Kos when he had him hurt badly on several occasions. And I think GSP has waaaaaayy better striking than Kos, great jab along with that superman punch leg kick combo. I see GSP taking him down, pounding him, hurtin him badly, then possibly in the 2nd or 3rd round, standing on the feet and trading with him. Gonna be a barnburner of a bout, cant wait.

one inch. That's it. Yes, he's got great mass, but his reach is going to be an albatross around his neck.
