Headkick KO of the Day: Gary Goodridge vs. Don Frye

(Goodridge vs. Frye, Pride Shockwave, 12/31/03)

So you watched Gary Goodridge’s poor showing against Gegard Mousasi on New Year’s Eve and thought to yourself, why do they keep bringing this guy back? The answer is a) he’ll fight just about anybody with a few hours notice, and b) there was a time when he thrilled the Japanese fans with his standing and banging. His final fight in Pride against legendary hard-ass and recent retiree Don Frye was just one such time.

It was only six years ago, and yet it feels like another lifetime. All those young bucks who felt like they were on top of the world with their New Year’s Eve victories at Dynamite!! might want to take note. The good times are good, but they do not last.

Not sure I would call it a poor showing. Was anyone expecting more?

And I would describe don frye as more of a legendary "hammer ass".

Yeah, I remember Gary from UFC 7 or 8. Too lazy to google.

It was when he reverse crucifixed his opponent and showered him with crushing elbow blasts to the side of the head.

Thought he was going to do better than he did in his career but I guess he made a go of it.

And yeah, I didn't think you could KO Frye's mustache like that either.

I actually met Gary way back at UFC 9 in Detroit and he was really cool. I'll never forget the time he caught his opponent in the crucifix and damn near killed him. Those were the good ol' days.

How could you show this clip without mentioning the fact that
Don Frye came back later on in the show and did commentary with Bas, joking about getting knocked out an hour earlier. At least that's how I remember it.

Just to clarify on my earlier post because this was so badass. Gary Goodridge was once in the dudes gaurd. He let the guy jack him in the face three time. Then said. "Not hard enough!" and then IMMEDIATELY knocked the guy the fuck out.

That was one of the early moments where is was like, 'yeah, this shit is awesome.'
