(People tell him to stop going to that damn epileptic barber, but Heath just won’t listen.)
Remember yesterday when we told you that Cain Velasquez was going to be back in action at UFC 99 in Germany, and we were hoping he’d see a step up in competition? Well, our wish has been granted, as MMA Weekly reports that Velasquez will face noted heavyweight stepping stone Heath Herring in Cologne this summer.
Herring, who is 2-3 since migrating to the UFC, last saw action as a one-man pony ride for Brock Lesnar in a decision loss that left Herring with a fractured orbital bone and Lesnar with a title shot. Before that Herring won a victory over Cheick Kongo, who briefly thought he was a wrestler, and lost a decision to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira despite rocking Big Nog with a head kick early on.
If what we saw in Herring’s performances against Lesnar and in his UFC debut loss to Jake O’Brien are any indication (remember what Velasquez did to O’Brien?), getting matched up with another big wrestler that the UFC has high hopes for is not a good sign for “The Texas Crazy Horse.” Velasquez seemed to have really rounded out his skill-set in his last fight, and he could put a serious hurting on Herring.
If he does, it’s basically Velasquez’s pass into the upper echelon of the UFC’s heavyweight class. If he doesn’t, Herring gets to keep hanging around in his win one, lose one fashion.
No word yet on who Velasquez’s AKA teammate Mike Swick will face, but there is this:

(Too close to Ovaltine, man. And I swore that stuff off back in ’96. Sorry.)
Our friends at Fightlinker found this brand new t-shirt design for Mike Swick’s “Swick-Fu” line. I like that it has a consistent theme, but I just can’t see myself or anyone who is not in Mike Swick’s entourage being proud to sport this on their back in public. This, however, is a different story…

Man, I've been wondering where the hell Herring has been. So I guess Cain gets a title shot too if he beats Heath.

i think the texas crazy horse is one of the only fighters that i really dislike. even though brock displayed poor sportsmanship, i'm still glad he one.

I wanna see Cain vs Shane. Just for rhymesake. Watch, all this talk and excitement about the new guys and then Herring and Gonzaga pull off the win. I'd be disappointed.

I like Herring. he was a real character in PrideFC and put on some really good fights. Nice way to hock the Cage Potato shirt at the end of the article... ...you tricky devils!

this should be an awesome fight. but it still doesn't make up for 99 losing penn vs florian. make penn fight.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:28
pretty exciting card. there's a lot of character and international fighters. if only they can find an opponent for mirko. i wouldn't mind seeing him headkick cheick. that should give him the confidence he needs right now.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:32
The CagePotato shirt is actually very comfortable. Clean and simple. They just need to come out with a new shirt.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:34
Herring is quite the character. But I just don't like his whole cowboy gimmick. I was also very happy when Brock sent him flying backwards into another dimension.

I don't really care for Heath, but he's definitely no slouch. He's still pretty young and he's got tons of experience. Plus, he's also a pretty damn big guy. I see him getting the decision. But I wouldn't mind seeing Cain knocking him out. Mike Swick's shirt isn't as cool as the CP shirt, but it's still miles ahead of the Affliction and TapOut shirts in coolness.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:44
I don't like mike swick but I would totally rock one of those swickatine shirts. That has always made me laugh...the Swickatine! hahah
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:46
I like Herring too. I hope he makes a comeback against Velasquez in a big fashion.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:48
I wish he wouldve head kicked cheick the first time they fought, then we couldve seen cro cop actually win against a worthy opponent in ufc....i hope he comes back strong
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:49
Cain won't get a shitletot because he's still waiting in line with Shane, Gonzaga, Randy, Nogueira, Dos Santos and I hate to say it... Kongo. Plus, they'll have to wait and see who wins between Mir and Lesnar to determine which fights are the most intriguing.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:50
Your headline kicks fightlinker's headline's ass! Score one for the Bens!
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:52
I propose: UFC 104 - Heavyweight Tournament Mir Lesnar Couture CroCop Carwin Dos Santos (but must fight for spot with Kongo and Gonzaga) Noguiera Fedor I would pay at least double if they put this on. 7 fights. No undercard.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 09:57
Yea, nice headline and caption boys. Give yourself some shirts. You earned it! I wanna live to see the day Fedor steps in the Octagon. Even if he was just stepping in with one foot for a second just to tease us. Please let it happen.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 10:00
the only thing that about heath's comeback regarding big fashion is that stupid long jacket and cowboy hat he comes out in. fashion no no. while i'm on that topic, aoki, lose the damn tights!
Thu, 02/26/09 - 10:03
So everyone is counting The Texas Crazy Horse out? But he's a tough dude. He took a 15min beating from Lesnar. That takes a lot of heart. Cain is still a newbie. I wouldn't mind seeing that tournament. But I wouldn't pay twice as much.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 10:14
Mike Swick - doing his part to eliminate the stigma from interracial homosexual armpit-lovin'
Thu, 02/26/09 - 10:16
Kongo already put a beating on cro cop. Frankly I don't think Herring, Kongo, or Cro Cop should be considered a big win anymore. They are all one dimensional and have been pretty unimpressive lately. Herring vs Kongo and parts of Cro Cop vs Kongo reminded me of the early ufc days when two guys with striking styles would fight and whoever the less crappy grappler was would win. Both fights had some ugly grappling.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 10:19
What is the message of this shirt? It seems to be that Mike Swick enjoys choking black people.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 10:28
Grammer FAIL
Thu, 02/26/09 - 10:35
Nice to see Herring getting back on that "Texas Crazy Horse" and take on a quality opponent. If he can pull out a win, this may get him back on a roll in the UFC and not just a stepping stone.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 11:17
Grammar* fail Speeling fail!
Thu, 02/26/09 - 11:18
randy couture vs. nog @ ufc 101
Thu, 02/26/09 - 12:02
motha fuking Heath Herring needs to stop focusing on his fucking hair and focus on being the great fighter he's capable of being.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 12:13
Heath has gorgeous hair. It's wonderful.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 12:25
Heath is Ok...but he is going to get beat up pretty bad in this one. The heavyweight tournament would be sick, but most of these guys would gas out...the first fights of the night would be epic, but then you would have some beat up tired Heavyweights swinging wild, looking tired and hugging each other....so no go on the tourney....but there are some intriguing fights in the UFC hw division now.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 02:48
herring seems to have trouble w wrestlers if its a lay n pray wrestling match cain might stand a chance.
Thu, 02/26/09 - 03:57
hahahaha. didn't anyone think it was fucking hilarious when they bagged on swicks shirt and then put a link to their piece-of-shit shirt they have for sale? dude, i fuckin died!
Thu, 02/26/09 - 04:02
If Cain wins, which I pretty much foresee happening, give him Kongo so that Cheick realizes he does not deserve a title shot. Thank You. Thank you.
