Holy Sh*t, It’s Really Happening: Diaz vs. St-Pierre Official for UFC 137 in October

UFC president Dana White made an otherwise slow news day into an exciting one that fight fans have been waiting for for a long time with a simple tweet that was succinct and to the point.

“U wanted it! U GOT IT!!!”

What we will get will be a welterweight showdown between UFC champ Georges St-Pierre and Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Although he didn’t say whether or not both (or any of the two for that matter) titles will be on the line, does it really even matter?

As we discussed during last week’s episode of The Bum Rush Radio Show, Diaz might be the most legitimate challenger St-Pierre has faced in some time, in spite of White’s constant claims that every challenger the St. Isidore, Quebec fighter has faced “is toughest opponent yet.” Of noting is that St-Pierre dropped just his first two rounds since 2008 against the the Stockton, California native’s Team Cesar Gracie training partner Jake Shields in April and many feel that Diaz is a more well-rounded version of the former Strikeforce middleweight champion.

Diaz too has not lost since 2007, having notched wins in that time over Frank Shamrock, Scott Smith, Mach Sakurai, KJ Noons and Paul Daley.

One thing’s for sure, St-Pierre isn’t going to be able to jab Diaz into a living death or smother him on the ground and dry hump him to a decision. This one’s gonna be a 209-style scrap, son.

gsp lost 2 rounds of stand up to shields what do you think will happen when he fights nick diaz. and to all the people saying he lost to deigo, that was 6 years ago. gsp lost to matt serra since then, so throw that argument right out the window. diaz makes since gsp has beaten everyone by 5th rd dec. diaz wins by finishing opponets
end of story. diaz by 2nd rd tko (gsp taps to strikes again)

"U wanted it you got it"?

What we wanted was GSP - Silva...
eviltwin- June 2, 2011 at 1:28 pm
Diaz is most exciting welterweight out there. It's a shame GSP's top control will nullify Diaz almost completely.
209Soldier- June 2, 2011 at 11:37 am
Who's uninformed son? He last fought in the UFC in 2006! 5 years ago! He hasn't improved since then? His standup has improved 10 fold if not more!!! and noons and daley are subpar to gsp? Duh who the hell is on gsp's level but gsp himself? intercept you a damn fool.
intercept440- June 2, 2011 at 10:42 am
wow the unintelligent annd uninformed now running into this site is amazing... there are only a few in here that leave intelligent comments, number 1 gsp is going to crush diaz, there is a reason why diaz was let go from his last ufc contract...he lost three times to so so fighters, how have ultimatly benn disgraced in the last few years, and diaz has beat no one really of any quality since he left...only two that had any quality at all were noons and daley , and there only barely subpar to gsp caliber of fighter....GSP win .. hopefully by sub or KO if not he still wins
beef_kurtains- June 2, 2011 at 9:34 am
I just don't give a shit about this fight. GSP is going to jab and wrestle Diaz into a living death.

Seems like everybody forgot that Nick Diaz couldn't get over on UFC caliber fighters who wrestle.

GSP by 5 round decision and GSP will be swollen and red.

Don't care.

"he has about as much chance as he has of shittin out a diamond"
In the 209 the colon is used as a time lock safe, just sayin ;)
Dagnut- June 2, 2011 at 8:35 am
So did anyone who gives him a chance watch him fighting Daley? You think that's impressive getting knocked on your ass by Daley?
I think this is the most ridiculous title shot yet... their are 5 fighters in the WW division capable of beating Diaz..just because he's exciting doesn't mean he's good or has earned a title shot..I like watching the guy don't get me wrong, but he has about as much chance as he has of shittin out a diamond
NukeBlast- June 2, 2011 at 8:24 am
Diaz can win if he land a good shot.

GSP will take him down at will. On the ground Diaz won't be able to do anything, not even standing up. We'll probably see a 25 minutes boring ground clinic.
MentalyptiC- June 2, 2011 at 7:02 am
I've always supported GSP, being Canadian, however his performances are blah. Clearly fights to not loose. I'll be hoping for Diaz, i like the guy and he deserves this, and I really wanna see him take the belt. Shit needs to shake up a little in the UFC.

GSP put up with Kos' ever-running mouth without too many issues. Why the hell would Diaz shit-talk accomplish anything different. Kos has a hell of a lot more wit to his trash-talk game than Diaz.

Regardless, this is a fight a lot of us want to see because there simply aren't many other interesting match-ups for GSP at 170. One downside is that it delays a move to 185 and a fight with Silva for another 6 months to a year...which means it probably won't ever happen.

I am a nut hugger of GSP, this fight excites me,....GSP will have to fight,.....Diaz can beat GSP.......anyone can lose in MMA, punch!.....Right Matt Sera?
rite leg ospitahl- June 2, 2011 at 6:32 am
this is a no lose fight for me. if diaz beats gsp i will finaly get to see that annoyingly likable frenchie die like a dog. if gsp does what he does best, study his opponent and prepare for his strenghts and expose his weaknesses, i will get to laugh my ass off at nick diaz and mutter to myself while watching the fight, "half a million dollar drawing fighter my ass" the one thing that diaz needs to be ever mindful of, is that u never go the distance with gsp. u'll lose the decision every time. diaz is gonna have to finish him period. im going on record now, my heart says diaz in the late third with a triangle...
FrontKick Dentist- June 2, 2011 at 5:24 am
Diaz needs to hurry and call Seagal before GSP does.
fatbellyfrank- June 2, 2011 at 4:45 am
Cant fucken wait for this one, Hope the action matches the hype,FBF's fearless prediction? either Diaz will win by beating GSP, or, GSP will win by defeating Diaz, and hopefully by having to use every technique they possess over five brutal rounds.
And I'm in Diaz's camp for this one ( sorry Drano)
Me likey- June 2, 2011 at 4:29 am
diaz doesn't deserve it but i am still psyched for it. diaz doesn't do good against good wrestlers and gsp has not had someone who is going to stay in has face for a while. god i hope gsp murders him.
rogerw- June 2, 2011 at 4:09 am
Awesome. Can't wait to see GSP bash Diaz's face in. And the trashtalk from 209 will be epic as well.
SnackDaddy- June 2, 2011 at 1:45 am
@RNS: Hell yeah!
SnackDaddy- June 2, 2011 at 1:41 am
It's ammusing how many of you think GSP would "loose it" when Diaz starts taunting him. Sounds like you guys don't know GSP at all. The guy's a freaking perfectionist and comes with a brilliant gameplan for evry fight. You think he won't come prepared for Diaz's cheap tactics? Besides, GSP is cool as cool as they come. The chances of him "losing it" are next to nothing. Also, it's pretty fucking laughable that you guys think the guy with one of the longest title defenses in the sport "fights scared". Don't get you panties in a twist, kids. GSP's fought much tougher opponents before and always come out on top.
RearNakedSpoon- June 2, 2011 at 1:37 am
As for people thinking Nick's taunting will be an advantage, he will eat a superman punch every time he throws his hands into the air.
RearNakedSpoon- June 2, 2011 at 1:26 am
Shields will be hard at work teaching Diaz how to throw a crafty eye poke, if he can blind GSP in both eyes and get away without a DSQ he might have a chance of winning 3 rounds.
Seriously though i'm a GSP fan and I also love seeing the Diaz brothers getting smashed helplessly so this will be a brilliant fight to watch :D
KidDinomite- June 2, 2011 at 1:18 am
I think the smart move by Diaz would be to really, and I mean REALLY work on his sprawl. Because you know that's where St. Pierre wants to take it immediately. If he tries to stand and bang with Diaz, he's gonna get Diaz sticking out his chin and taunting him. St. Pierre won't be able to deal with that shit and will crack so he'll definitely be looking to take this into the ground for a 5 round 'Jon Fitch Special ™ " because he won't risk trying to out-jiu jitsu Diaz who would most likely put him in a triangle. It's a lose lose for GSP because he knows Diaz has better jiu jitsu on the ground and won't be a pushover when the ref tells him to 'work' and make them stand, and because fans DEMAND a finish and he won't be able to deliver because Diaz has a good chin as well as good skill in boxing and arguably equal or better ground skills. GSP also loses because Ricardo Mayorga says "real men go for KO!"
Casa de los pantelones- June 2, 2011 at 1:16 am
I see Diaz taunting GSP much of the first round, as GSP fights scared most of the time. Once Diaz finds a home for his punches in bunches, GSP will try to take him down. In doing so he will be repeatedly exposed to submission attempts. GSP is strong, so he will be able to defend most of them, and may even go for some of his own. This will all go down in the 2nd/3rd rounds.

Once back standing in the 3rd/4th rounds, Diaz will be fully comfortable and GSP will still be fighting not to lose. Diaz will eventually find a home for his punches, and GSP will be in wtf do I do now mode...which entails serious evasion/circling or all out repeated take down attempts.

I see this either going to decision, with Diaz the winner by sheer aggression/activity or Diaz getting lucky, like a Diaz usually does (I mean many times has Nate been in the middle of getting beat down, only to pull off a submission?), and catching GSP with a hook of some type, wobbling him and capitalizing.

I love how "bussiness as usual" translates to "I make whatever fights I want"

I do believe this is a good indicator that the people who said Strikeforce will go the way of WEC were 100% correct.

I dont see Diaz winning this one either.

Diaz lost to Diego sanchez.

The end.
