Houston Alexander Blames Fans for Loss

(Alexander vs. Schafer; props to MMA Scraps)

From Yahoo! Sports via MMA Mania:

“The crowd was so loud that I couldn’t hear my corner. If I heard them and knew, you know, there are 10 seconds left, five seconds left, whatever, I would have tried to hung in there a little longer and survived. But it was so loud and these people were supporting me so much, I couldn’t hear and I had to tap.”

Hear that, Cornhuskers? It’s your fault.

Watching the Alexander/Schafer fight again, a few things occur to me…

— The first big knee Alexander caught Schafer with at the 0:20 mark was borderline illegal. The second one was absolutely illegal. Coincidentally, the penultimate strike he landed on Keith Jardine during their fight last May was also an illegal knee. The dude’s been getting away with murder.

— Alexander still has no idea what to do when he’s mounted. It may be time to find a new training camp. (I hear the guys at Wolfslair Academy are very friendly…)

— Houston’s lack of aptitude on the ground shouldn’t take away from Schafer’s accomplishment; that arm-choke was fucking superb. Watch the way he sets it up from 4:33 until the tap. Still, Red won’t have too much of an impact in such a stacked division — a drop to middleweight might be in order.

I don't buy Houston's excuse. He chose to tap out rather than to perservere. I was a bit surprised he tapped with a hometown crowd cheering him on and a UFC career in jeapardy. I agree that he needs a ground game. Dare I say Kimbo Slice could probably take him on the ground?

The UFC must drop him. Too many losses and no ground game. not even a passable ground game. And those knees were definately illegal.

I agree with Aaron.... thats lame. I could hear Red's corner yelling out the time and they were right infront of them. You could see it in Houston's eyes once he was taken down... its almost like he gave up. After losing like that to Thiago why wouldnt you be working on sweeps? You knew Red was going to go for the take down.... oh well maybe he can go fight Ken Shamrock after Kimbo does.... that should net him a win.

...Right a drop to middleweight, I'm sure Marquardt, Henderson, Okami, MacDonald, Maia, et al. would be easy marks. The fact is that Schafer doesn't have what it takes at this point in his career. 185 may not have as many (ok, zero) actual Contenders for the belt, but the level of talent in that division is just as high as it is in any other within the UFC. If you disagree, I'd love to hear your reasoning.

Houston seems to suffer from a rare condition which causes paralysis from the waist down whenever he is on his back. Seriously dude use your legs, have you ever heard of guard. I don't think he'll ever have a problem hearing over the cheers again after these comments.
  6. TUF Guy Says:

    Wed, 09/17/08 - 07:48

Great Fight... Schafer deserved that win no doubt. He could never pull that on me because my ground game is as devestating as my striking but Alexander learned a good lesson there never to be too confident. If this fight went into the second round Schafer could have possibly killed him, like I would have if I never got banned from MMA.

    Wed, 09/17/08 - 07:54

Same here TG! None of these UFC chumps could ever get past my mad skill on the ground or on the fett. I would demolish Anderson Silva in about 2 minutes. That is 2 minutes if I was being cautious. If I was being my normal, savage, non-human/superhuman like self, the 47 seconds. But I would probably be cautious because he is kind of dangerous. Too bad The Man won't let me fight in North America anymore due to the fact that I killed so many dudes in the ring with my brutal neck-snap-submission-knock-out-punch-hold. Oh well, I guess I'll have to keep beating up deserving high school kids for luch money.

  12. SL Says:

I may be among the minority, but I still like Alexander; win or lose his fights are always exciting (with the exception of the Irvin fight), which is more than one can say for a number of other fighters in the UFC. That being said, I agree with all of what has been said about him needing desperately to develop some semblance of a ground game if he wants to be of any relevance in the future. Maybe Alexander is of the same mindset as Liddell in that he thinks what has worked for him in the past will continue to work now (though after three straight losses one must seriously begin to reconsider this assumption). Either that or he figures he's just to old to bother with something new.
  13. Just me Says:

Is TUF guy supposed to be the ultimate level?
  14. MMA Wannabe Says:

    Wed, 09/17/08 - 08:19

TUF guy is just a troll; I'd ignore him, really. Houston still has no ground game to speak of? Still? You'd think that his camp would be working on this, but I guess not nearly enough. Shouldn't he have learned from Cro Cop's time in the UFC? They both have brutal striking power but all CroCop and Alexander had for ground game was just takedown defense and then the strategy of "hold them and pray the ref stands us up" comes into play. *Sigh* As for his fight with Jardine, that knee that Houston threw looked more like it hit the upper chest than the head, otherwise I doubt that final punch that Houston threw would have been needed.
  15. Derekrva Says:

    Wed, 09/17/08 - 08:23

Though its been pointed out to death, Houston...we have a problem. Sure guys like Chuck Lidell win their fights on their feet, but thats because they dont get taken down. I would love to see Houston take about 6 months off and focus on the ground. If you think anyone is going to bother to stand with you at this point you just don't get MMA. Good fighter with the potential to be great. He needs a better camp and a BJJ bible.
  16. Keith Says:

    Wed, 09/17/08 - 08:25

Too bad Houston lost. He is not the greatest MMA fighter but he is a good character with a huge right hand. I don't think it will be three losses and out for Houston. They will keep him just as they keep Sakara because their fights finish fast.
  17. MMMMM Says:

Red is too big to go to 185. He ways like 220-230 normally

I am an amazing MMA fighter, not even a troll. If honesty is trolling then you guys are defenetly not trolls. You are a MMA WANNABE , we make tools like you wipe down the equipment while they are paying to train. Since I am a MMA fighter and you a wannabe, that means you want to be like me. HAhaHAha ha HA haHA huhHAhuhA I would love to face you in the cage, you would try some weak ass judo throw and I would just stand there like "did this fight start already?" . I swear thats how it would happen.

blatant illegal knees, retarded on the ground, three straight losses, ufc better drop him
  22. JP Says:

    Wed, 09/17/08 - 08:35

Shafer didnt have all three points on the ground during the knee strikes, therefore, it was legal! Houston is very entertaining in my eyes, and I still like to watch him compete, but he is useless on the ground and needs to switch up camps to learn a thing or two, rather than stay "loyal" to his current camp.

you know it was funny, when it went to the ground both me and my friend who were watching just went "yeah it's over". Im surprised that people only waited until now to question the legality of the knee against Keith Jardine.

@TUF guy. I am MMA Wannabe, simply because I don't want to sound like I think I'm God's Gift to the sport. I'm not. I'm young and right now, I'm all athlete and little skill. Should I ever wind up sounding like you on even the internet I hope I die a long and slow death. However, there is a fact that I will brag upon; I'm 2-4 amateur. That's right. 2-4 The two wins were over smacktalking morons like you. My losses were to real men with professionalism, discipline and respect for fellow fighters. Not only are you not an MMA fighter, but you probably don't even know a single one. Go back to your mom's basement and pretend, while people who actually respect the sport go out and get better and better at it. I used to enjoy the comments but clearly this troll wants to crap all over the goodness of this site. I hope Ben craps down your throat and laughs when you gag.

@TUF Guy - you're right, you're not a troll but you pretend you be. you don't have the intelligence to actually be a troll, you're more like blog plankton, a mindless bottom dwelling creature with no purpose except to feed off of the floating filth of the online ocean. I'm guessing you're also not fighter because real fighters, at least the one's with skill, are incredibly humble and don't talk shit unless it's to hype up a fight against a specific opponent. Otherwise the only idiots that talk trash like you do are the one's that get their asses kicked on the first episode of TUF. But hey, prove me wrong. Post a link to some video of you rolling on the mats with your mad skill. See if you can back your words up instead of taking up space on an otherwise quality site. Ooh! Truth hurts like a high kick to the head don't it...but of course you're bad ass self must know what that feels like.

Thank you!!! I have been saying that about the Jardine fight since it happened. I do not know how it has been overlooked for so long. Houston is a popular fighter but he is not a draw. He has 6 kids and is a lot older than most fighters, so I wonder if he jas the desire and the time to dedicate to studying the ground game. He may need to fight at some of the smaller feds and try to work out the kinks. If they cut him he will be signed by EXC within a week. They will have him on tv quicker than the Flash. Plus, I did not think that the crows was that loud. Plus he should have heard the 10 second clacker.

he has 12 kids, man needs to learn what a condom is. The fact that he turned down elite camps to stay with his crew just shows him for what he is, a decent lower card fighter with some recognition. Ah well maybe he'll hit the indy scene get some wins and come back, I like watching him fight just cause you know it won't be a decision hahah. oh and, Internet tuf guys are like retards that don't know they're retarded. for the record, I'm 0-1 in amateur mma. Jits kicks my ass. MMA Wannabe, we should have a match! hahahha.

  34. Anthony Says:

@JP - Um both knees were illegal. The first one could be seen as "Houston was going for the knee before Red was in a 3 point stance" but whatever. Houston is a talentless hack. Yaaay ! He has heavy hands. So do a lot of dudes in MMA but those dudes tend to learn how to throw a punch and not just hope to get lucky. Besides someone should tell Houston that you salute with your right hand and not your left. Dude looks almost as bad as John Cena and while you can't see John cena you also can't see Houston Alexanders UFC carreer going any further. =D
