How Brandon Vera Plans to Beat Randy Couture

I spoke with Brandon Vera for an SI.com article this week about his fight with Randy Couture at UFC 105 and what it would mean for him to beat a legend.  To hear Vera tell it, he realizes that he got a little too full of himself early in his career, but his new training partners have brought him back down to earth.  He says he’s never trained harder for a fight in his life, but he still had some trouble trying to figure out how he’s going to throw anything at Couture that the guy hasn’t already seen:

"I was thinking, what can I do to Randy that he’s never experienced before? I thought long and hard about it and it’s tough because of who he is and how long he’s been in the sport. But Randy’s never fought anybody with kicks and shins like me. I only have to hit him three or four times each round with my shin, and it could change the fight. I’m going to hit Randy like he’s never been hit before."

In other words, he’s going to try to do to Couture what he did to Mike Patt.  But this begs the question, if Vera is so confident in his ability to break opponents down and put them away with his kicks, why didn’t he try to do more of that in his last fight with K-Sos, which he won via a very narrow decision?  His answer might surprise you:

"I don’t want to be just known; I want to be a well-rounded MMA fighter.  For the Krzystof fight I decided to fight in a southpaw stance and try to knock him out with my hands.  I really didn’t care too much to kick him.  It probably would have been over a lot quicker if I had been kicking and gone back to my usual gameplan.  But if I can fight from a southpaw stand and knock someone out from a southpaw stance, then people would be like, ‘Oh man, he can kick you, he can knock you out, and he can knock you out from southpaw?  How am I going to fight this guy?’  So I was trying to make a statement while I was fighting."

It’s ambitious, but pretty risky for a guy who needed that victory in order to have two consecutive wins on his record for the first time since 2006.  If he tries to make too many statements against Couture, he could be in for a very rough night tomorrow.

What a douche. I hope Randy hurts Brandon's face. "But if I can fight from a southpaw stand and knock someone out from a southpaw stance, then people would be like, ‘Oh man, he can kick you, he can knock you out, and he can knock you out from southpaw? How am I going to fight this guy?’" Really? That's what you were thinking Brandon? I think you should kill yourself and rid us of your stupidity.

"But Randy's never fought anybody with kicks and shins like me." Vera must not have heard of a guy named Pedro Rizzo. And he must not have heard that because of this guy, Couture had problems walking to his locker room after the fight due to the leg kicks he took.

I think Randy should go for it with new sponsors. If he came in with shorts that said Glucosamine and Chondroitin I'd shit myself. Speaking of shitting, he should see if Depends will chip in a little money too. The UFC could always use more sponsors and Randy is a great spokesman. I'd say it's a win, win.
