How the Mighty Have Fallen: Roy Jones Jr. Edition

(Jones vs. Danny Green, 12/2/09)

Roy Jones Jr. fought in Australia last night — or, technically, today — against 36-year-old Australian boxer Danny Green.  It did not go well for Roy.  Though Jones was a -350 favorite with oddsmakers, he got dropped early on in the first round and never really recovered.  The old hand speed, the head that never stayed in one place long enough for opponents to even get a good look at it, all of that was gone as Green poured on the punishment for a first-round TKO victory.  Said Green afterwards: "I almost felt bad doing that.  It almost hurt me to do that to someone I look up to as a professional inside and outside the ring."

When they start talking about you like that, it’s time to hang them up.  Looks like that Anderson Silva fight would be a mismatch now after all, only not in the way some previously thought.

Joedirt- December 2, 2009 at 2:27 pm
No disrespect to the spider.... but even with age catching up to Roy.... Roy would still own Silva in the ring.
AussieJosh- December 2, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Aussie Aussie Aussie!!!

bad form CP. spreading hypothetical garbage myths... oh yeah, because RJJ loses in a big upset he is suddenly a big underdog in an imaginary fight with silva. gimme a break

Walrus- December 2, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Now Australians are gonna think they're better than us.
robthom- December 2, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Wow! I dont know much about boxing, but that beating he put on james toney was on of the coolest things I've ever seen. The hand speed, head movement, etc just like you said. Thats kind of a bummer to hear this.

It's a shame seeing Roy Jones get handled like that. Gotta happen to everyone eventually, though.
Starry- December 2, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Jones is advoiding people all his life. I saw that coming a mile away.

Looked like Green was training with Roy wearing pads right before the knockout.
Jones looked a little like the Diaz brothers with the right hand hanging up there, if your not attacking though it is not very effective or wise.
Stop trying to hail taxi cabs in the middle of the first round Roy, WTF happend to you?

^^ Except there wasn't a kid in severe distress in the crowd. See "Kimbo's Son" in google images.

Reminded me of the Seth Petruzelli/Kimbo fight... Jr. is counting them duckets.

Obvious work.

Anderson Silva > RJJ.
Japanadian- December 2, 2009 at 10:49 am
Jones gets what he deserves for keeping his left hand at his hips all the time. it's good to be confident but not cocky and keeping his hand down makes him seem like a dick. He reminds me of Prince Nassim. I hope he fights Silva and realizes he should stop joking about retirement.

"Jones and posse made a killing on -350"

Hell yeah he did and the odds were probably triple that for a 1st round TKO. Great way for Jones to get out of the game!!!!
kerouac- December 2, 2009 at 10:24 am
said Jones after the fight: "I have got to take my hat off to Danny, it was a great performance. I guess now I go back into retirement,”
MKO- December 2, 2009 at 10:15 am
Damn, Roy doesn't have any legs anymore.
steampunk22- December 2, 2009 at 10:12 am
Fucking keep your left hand up you moron. That was awful.
Soda Popinski- December 2, 2009 at 10:08 am
should have stuck with that left jab. that sucker's quicker than a mouse trap.
Bill Clinton- December 2, 2009 at 10:07 am
I agree w/ petro, looks like the kind of shot Couture took from Lesnar.
knee_strike- December 2, 2009 at 10:04 am
Jones may not be the fighter he once was, but I wouldn't want to face him in the ring. Let's give Green some credit. He faced a worthy opponent and defeated him soundly. Danny boy and his team deserved to celebrate.
Koeikan- December 2, 2009 at 10:03 am
He definitely looked bad/off, but I'm still not convinced Silva would beat him in boxing...

I'm just not sure what to make of that fight... He looked pretty good against Lacy?
petro- December 2, 2009 at 9:56 am
I really don't think RJJ should be looked down upon for his loss...that was one lucky punch...looping overhand right that landed practically at the back of RJJ's head. Shit happens.
