Ilir Latifi to Sub In for Alexander Gustafsson Against Gegard Mousasi at UFC on Fuel TV 9

I can’t help but feel I’ve seen this picture before (Image via adccbarcelona.com)

It has only been a few hours since we learned that Alexander Gustafsson was officially forced out of the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 9 due to a gash in his eyebrow, yet the UFC has already announced who Gegard Mousasi’s new opponent will be. No, it won’t be Wanderlei Silva. No, it won’t be Tom Lawlor, either. I know, I’m just as disappointed as you are.

Instead, Dana White took to his Twitter account to announce that UFC newcomer Ilir “The Sledgehammer” Latifi will be fighting Gegard Mousasi in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 9. Via Twitter:

Not to be a pessimist, but when your boss misspells your name while announcing that you’ll be fighting a UFC-ranked Top Ten light-heavyweight, things aren’t exactly looking good for you.

A quick glance at Latifi’s qualifications won’t exactly change your outlook, either. Aside from being a training partner of Alexander Gustafsson, Latifi is 7-2 as a professional with one no contest. He has fought one guy you’ve heard of, and lost that fight by unanimous decision back at Shark Fights 17 in July 2011. Also of note, he is only 5’8” tall, giving Gegard Mousasi a significant height advantage. It is what it is, I guess.

As MMAJunkie is reporting, Mousasi vs. Latifi will be the new main event of UFC on Fuel 9. However, due to the bout being booked on short notice, it will be three rounds instead of five rounds.

Does Ilir Latifi have any chance here, or will Gegard Mousasi be too much for the Swedish prospect? Or for that matter, does this card still appeal to you, or are you planning on watching something else this Saturday? Let us know how you feel in the comments section.

@jayjits
The only weird omen is that CP is apparently international. World Wide Web, spreading stupid shit around the globe since 1993.
Or whenever the fuck Al Gore invented the Internet
JayJitsu310- April 3, 2013 at 6:15 pm
Well seeing how there are less people in all of Sweden than there are in the city of Los Angeles, I don't think they are quite international yet. National might even be a stretch. Is Semi-national a term?
JayJitsu310- April 3, 2013 at 2:55 pm
Off topic, but I thought I would share this since I just saw it on TV while I was posting.

Does anyone else get a "Mostapha al-Turk" vibe from Latifi? Stocky grappler, regional title, won the 05 European ADCC trials; that could describe either guy. Hell, their records prior to their UFC debuts are even similar; Latifi is 7-2-1 and al-Turk was 6-3 at the time of his debut

This actually might work out better for Mousasi in the long run. Yeah, a win over Gus would be a big deal and vault him into title contention, but murdering a dude in the main event will go a lot further in getting regular fans to take notice and give a shit about him then some plodding, meticulous battle could.

is his nickname "Queen"?

Not only do I have to point out the wrongs from the dumbass authors but now another fellow user.... I wouldnt expect more from you ufc inbreeds.... Iliar is an exiting fighter, deserves more credit than you nobodys give him. & Jay btw he was knocked out by a "unknown fighter" named tatsuya mizuno... a great war none of you ever witnessed and hopefully wont see it on youtube because it's a more entertaining fight than half the ones you'll see in ufc
JayJitsu310- April 3, 2013 at 2:26 pm
My bad, that was 5 years ago though, and was a stoppage, not a KO. TKO and KO are 2 different things, he got up and was groggy, but wasn't "out cold" since you want to split hairs about it. And Tatsuya Mizuno isn't unknown, he's lost to Mousasi, has beaten Manhoef, and lost to Kharitonov during his stint in DREAM, which I watched. Also you need to take it down a notch since I didn't see you at Superior Challenge 8 last year here in Sweden. I know who he is and have seen him fight live, how about you MR. Latifi expert all of a sudden? Mousasi is a superior striker, and a legit grappler as well, so you pick who you want, I'll take the guy with more experience, and a full training camp. And I did give him credit, I'm just not hanging off his nuts like you are, you're pretty sensitive about him, are you his BFF or something?
Mr_Misanthropy- April 3, 2013 at 12:33 pm
Thank you for your insightful and articulate correction of my backwoods ignorance, Mr. Dumbasses. I will gladly credit your complete and forceful grasp of Mr. Lafiti's wrinkled sack as the factor that opened my eyes to my wrongful assumptions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Misanthropy

PS- I think you misspelled Ilir's name.

PPS- He's still getting destroyed.

JayJitsu310- April 3, 2013 at 2:47 pm
Is it a weird omen that while typing this I just saw a Steven Segal commercial on TV here in Sweden? He walks into his house and hangs his Ponytail on a rack which holds, I shit you not, other Ponytails! The guy is seriously everywhere...
JayJitsu310- April 3, 2013 at 2:31 pm
He misspelled a lot of things.
nick diaz and the dub sack- April 3, 2013 at 7:05 am
Well it is worth pointing out that Tatsuya Mizuno isn't very good
JayJitsu310- April 3, 2013 at 2:38 pm
We could do MMAth and point out that Mizuno "knocked him out" and Mousasi KO'd Mizuno, therefore... well you know where this is going...
Mousasi by knees, since he's probably watching the Mizuno fight on YouTube right about now.
JayJitsu310- April 2, 2013 at 11:39 pm
PS, you forgot to note that Latifi has NEVER been KO'd.
JayJitsu310- April 2, 2013 at 11:23 pm
LMAO, I was joking around saying he should fill in. He's an okay choice since he's known here, but that's where the fun ends, I mean He's the Superior Challenge LHW Champion, he's a beast, and he's on a 3 fight win streak, but he has little chance against Mousasi. He's a Swede, but he just beat my old trainer Jorge Oliveira by wrestlefuck a couple months back, so I won't be sad if Mousasi KO's him :)
algiersheadkick504- April 2, 2013 at 9:50 pm
....I hope the dude brings that bitch with him he gonna need her after honestly no shot this guy pulls an upset right? Mousasi beat mark hunt...mark fucking hunt
ReX13- April 2, 2013 at 6:45 pm
Joe Rogan says that this guy is "an AN-I-MAL" and Mike Goldberg may have suffered a minor stroke trying to pronounce "Ilir Latifi".
Mr_Misanthropy- April 2, 2013 at 6:21 pm
Somebody needs to soak Latifi's knarr with gasoline and fill it full of firewood today so it's ready to go.
MMA Mafia- April 2, 2013 at 6:13 pm
The card just went from, "It's crappy but hey, it's free so I'll watch it" to ""Damn this card sucks. Ima just DRV it and watch it later to see how Gregard looks".
algiersheadkick504- April 2, 2013 at 6:12 pm
Mousasi by decapitation and Eatting of the soul or mousasi loses and we go to war with north Korea followed by the end of the world and hell freezing over
