Insane Fight of the Day: Fighter Taps Out, Passes Out, Scores Second Round TKO

If a botched call is generally known as a “Mazzagati,” then this referee just earned the Pornstache Lifetime Achievement Award for this epic flub. Passed along to us by none other than KarmaAteMyCat, the above video depicts what may be the worst referee blunder in the history of MMA. Sound impossible? Prepare to have your puny minds blown.

The event was Warrior Nation XFA III. The day was April 20th. In a preliminary 135 lb contest, Justin Kristie made his amateur debut against fellow rookie David Baxter. You can watch most of the first round if you’d like, but we recommend that you skip to the 4:13 mark, where, with ten seconds remaining, Kristie locks in a tight triangle. Baxter either throws some open palm strikes, or in our opinion, appears to tap with five seconds remaining. The ref doesn’t react, a pattern that will become disturbingly apparent in the very near future, so Kristie promptly chokes Baxter the fuck out as the bell sounds.

This is where things take a turn into the truly bizarre.

Kristie immediately celebrates upon seeing that Baxter is without a doubt in the world unconscious, a sentiment that is also picked up by a few of his cornermen and any audience member without cataracts. Meanwhile, the referee halfheartedly attempts to hold Baxter down as he begins to seizure, staring at him with the ineptitude and helplessness of a slutty white female in a horror movie, before several physicians make their way into the ring.

After simply staring down at Baxter’s unconscious body for a few moments, the officials quickly scatter and allow Baxter’s cornermen to his side, realizing that the guys in Tapout shirts are far more trained to deal with the situation at hand than they are. By the time the one-minute warning whistle has been blown, Baxter has fully regained consciousness, and despite the fact that he has spent the last minute in a pile on the mat, is allowed to continue.

“How bout that, ladies and gentlemen? We’re going to see a round 2,” remarks the strip club DJ, which somehow doesn’t cause everyone in Kristie’s corner to launch into a full-on Joe Mikulik meltdown. Apparently this promotion follows the Chael Sonnen “If you tap out you only lose the round” school of logic. That, or the original referee and ringside physicians were replaced by Frank Drebin and his crew of cohorts in an undercover effort to catch a local con man or purse snatcher.

On the off chance that you haven’t already rage-fired your computer into a wall, here comes the craziest part yet. Re-energized by his temporary crossover into the afterlife, Baxter actually manages to rally in the second round and score a TKO victory over his gassed and flabbergasted opponent. Why Kristie wasn’t given the same opportunity to recover for the third round is beyond us. In either case, this referee, along with the “physicians” at ringside who have not yet acquired the proper medical schooling to recognize when someone is clearly unconscious, should not only be rebuked for their actions, they should be barred from ever stepping foot in an MMA event in Massachusetts for the rest of their natural lives. Hell, their children shouldn’t even be allowed near an MMA event for this disastrous call.

We’re not going to treat you like the idiots involved in the above fiasco, but suffice it to say, allowing a fighter to compete after he has just been choked out is insanely dangerous bordering on criminal. The fact that Baxter managed to use the incompetency of the crew who is supposed to be protecting him to his advantage is a moot point.

To sum our feelings up, we award this referee no points, and may God have mercy on his soul.

Everyone has a job to do! The coaches coach! The fighters fight! The referee refs and Doctors are there to evaluate the fighters condition. Not one but two ringside physicians told the ref that the fighter was clear to continue. This was not a knock out from a strike which is much more dangerous. This was a chokeout a split second after the bell. To blame the ref is complete BS and anyone that does.... well you dont know the sport and clearly dont understand the reponsibility of the coaches, Refs, and physicians.

Can someone wake that guy up? It's time for round 2...
ArmFarmer- August 2, 2012 at 1:41 pm
I don't care how you look at it.. fact is when the round ended a fighter was left unconscious and convulsing from a legal hold. The fight is over, triangle man got roobed, and that ref f'd up. Also.. if you forget to copy your comment before you post.. just hit cancel, copy it, then log in and paste it.

reminds me of pro wrestling when the guy taps but the ref is out and later the guy who tapped comes back to win it when the referee comes back to his senses

It didn't look like a tap to me, seemed more to be desperate strikes, however, he was CLEARLY out.

Although the Doctors advice may have been medically sound (I'm not a Doctor so who knows?), from a refereeing point of view the competitor was out at the end of the round so it should of been stopped there and then.

If the triangle had been held on for longer than the end of round signal with the choking fighter not releasing the triangle then the best case scenario would be that the fighter would be disqualified for illegally applying the choke longer than indicated by the round constraints. The fight should never have been restarted or taken into the subsequent round.

As it is, the choke was released immediately after the end of round signal so this is not the case. This should have been a stoppage and a win due to triangle choke.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fucking idiot and a stain on our sport.

Ive watched you cock goblins fuck Karma's shit up for YEARS and I have never partaken. I decide to take a stand on this issue and type a fucking novel out of pure sarcasm just to have my post get lost to the log-in gods. I'm not retyping the whole thing so here's the gist:

Phd.=philosophy doctorate

M.D.= medical doctor

(Use your imagination for the sarcasm)

For crying out loud is it allowed to think aloud about the bout?
ghostboner- August 1, 2012 at 10:22 pm
Aloud: audible, able to be heard, out loud.

Allowed: to give permission to do something or permit something to occur; to fail to prevent something from occuring; to admit an event or action as legal and acceptable; to give the necessary time or opportunity for something to occur.

It's about time MMA ditched the whole tap gimmick. Two man enter one man leaves.
KarmaAteMyCat- August 1, 2012 at 9:40 pm
I've spoken to Steve within the last few hours and he explained to me. He aloud to ringside Doctor to check the unconscious fighter after he came to, the ring doctor said there was no concussion and the fight could continue. Steve aloud the fight to go on it's that simple. It lead to an insane come back, I like Steve as a person he's a good dude and does his job really well. I do agree that if you want a hang em high situation the ringside doctor with the Phd, should be consulted on his school which accredited him his degree.

Was just gonna post pretty much what abenormal just posted...

Which is that first, the tap wasn't really obvious. Second, he didn't actually seem unconscious until after the bell rang.

So I don't see anything wrong with the ref's decision based off these things, but I know nothing about health and procedures so I wouldn't know if he handled the guy being unconscious correctly.
abenormal- August 1, 2012 at 7:12 pm
My first observation; Warrior Nation XFA has multiple cameramen wielding hi-def rigs. Watch out UFC!

2nd: That was not clearly a tap. A tap is "taptaptap" but that was more like "Slap Slap Slap." It may have been meant as a tap, but it was a little too aggressive. Perhaps Baxter was panicking as his world went dark and he heard the echoes of mortality, but dude needs to work on his death-tap if he wants to be let out of future chokes.

3: Saved by the bell... he wasn't clearly limp until after the buzzer. So he seizured a little bit. If you've ever been to a nitrous party you've seen dudes flop around worse than that, then they wake up and they get right back after that tank.
drainplugofideas- August 1, 2012 at 6:09 pm
If this really was 4/20 then I forgive the ref.
HEY- August 1, 2012 at 5:02 pm
Tried to triangle again in round two to no avail. The triangle is the refuge of cowards. That's why he lost... lol
El Guapo- August 1, 2012 at 4:34 pm
Are you people stupid or something? That's the ref from the first UFC. Stupids
Kid Clam Curtains- August 1, 2012 at 4:22 pm
Baxter? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee.
Clyde- August 1, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Shit, Matt Hughes now that I think about it. And Gray Maynard at least managed to pull a no contest while KO'ed.
Clyde- August 1, 2012 at 4:09 pm
Nevermind Silva v Sonnen I, Duffee v Russow, Scott Smith v anyone or any other shit, that is the greatest comeback of all time. Loads of people come back from being wrestlefucked for a few rounds, being out struck for the majoriy of the fight, but who can say they actually lost consciousness and still won? But yeah, the ref needs shooting.
KarmaAteMyCat- August 1, 2012 at 2:50 pm
I more so shared it on FB. This ref is a really nice guy and a good referee he just made a Cecil Peoples sized karate kick of a mistake. Just wanted to say we all make them, I would be so pissed if he beat me round two. I would also refuse to fight him if i new he was out because I don't want to hurt anyone.. Meh
doctorman- August 1, 2012 at 2:30 pm
red shorts has a good lookin sister and the ref likes her.
thats the only reason for that I can think of.
