Interesting Tidbit of the Day: Rampage Was Offered Fight With Shogun But He Turned it Down

(Video courtesy of YouTube/wallenrichard)

Tatame is reporting that Jon Jones was not the UFC’s first choice as Mauricio "Shogun" Rua’s replacement opponent for UFC 128. According to the UFC light heavyweight champion, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was offered the title shot in place Rashad Evans, who injured his knee training last week in Albuquerque, but the A-Team star declined the fight for undisclosed reasons.

“The UFC had another opponent in mind, but it didn’t work out. For some reason [Qinton Jackson] didn’t accept the title shot," Shogun explained. “I’ll have to change my training because [Jon Jones] is a lot different than Rashad. He’s much taller, which will present a great challenge. He’s been surprising everybody in the UFC — defeating everybody with ease, and it’ll be a tough fight for me."

"Smell it!"

Maybe Rampage is still waking up in cold sweats from the recurring nightmare of getting his head soccer-kicked into the fifth row by Shogun.

That fat fuck Rampage couldn't get in shape in time. I would have given him a good chance against Shogun, but he isn't getting that belt back once Jones gets in there.

Maybe he now weighs 240 and knows he can't cut to 205 in 6 weeks?

I wonder if Rampage could pull off the win against Shogun, and avenge that devastating loss like he did Silva. I think he did the smart thing by not taking the fight though. He'll get another chance. His wrestling is better than Thiago Silvas so, he SHOULD win that fight.

didn't the UFC kind of rope him into doing the show? i seriously dont' remember him being offered the Machida title fight. aw, fuck it!

We'll still get Shogun/Rampage II... right after Bones & Thiago beat them.

@ let it rain

It was right before he coached on the ultimate fighter against Rashad. Rather than fight for the title against Machida he decided he wanted to fight and shut up Rashad instead. Wish he had whooped his ass and accomplished his goal on that one

Too bad it is such short notice (providing that is indeed the reason), I would have loved to see Rampage and Shogun go at it again. The nostalgia alone would make this fight worth while and do all the promoting and provide all the hype it needed. I like both fighter's styles and personalities. Hopefully whether it's for the title or just a match up down the road, I hope the UFC can put this fight together. Maybe rather than being a "Braziliphobe" he can avenge another of his well known losses like he did with Wanderlei. Fingers crossed

Tbh they could even have anderson silva fight shogun :O

but yeah, i feel that the UFC and kswiss think that Jon Jones is the shiz and want to push him now and right now. Although all the pressure seemed to be on jones, bader is the one who had the real pressure on him as losing would cost him everything. Jones would likely get a shot whatever happened, where as Bader will move quite far down and may not get a shot for a long time.

As for you caption " smell it "!!! omg lol :D :D

did I miss when he was offered a title fight against Machida?
Fried Taco- February 7, 2011 at 3:59 pm
Sounds like the UFC is just looking for any black guy to fight Shogun.

I think him turning down this fight was a very smart idea. We all know that Rampage is known to get out of shape during time between fights and training camps, he has been known to blow up to about 250 pounds. He would only have 6 weeks to prepare for this fight and get in shape and he knows that Shogun is one of the best fighters in the world. How can you be mad at Rampage for wanting to be in the best shape he can be and have a full training camp before he fights the #1 lightheavy weight in the world?
LET IT RAIN- February 7, 2011 at 3:53 pm
i knew they had to ask him first.
Koeikan- February 7, 2011 at 3:48 pm

Yeah, don't you remember? First death in the UFC, after he ripped off Edgar's arm and he bled out.
Koeikan- February 7, 2011 at 3:47 pm
I wouldn't be surprised if it had more to do with the 6 weeks to train.

Rampage has a habit of turning into a (occasionally insane) chain-smoking fatass between fights.

I didn't know Shogun cut to lightweight and won the belt......

I think Rampage suffers from Brazliophobia. He already turned down a title fight againt Machida a year or 2 back. And AGAIN, he turned down ANOTHER title fight. I know Thiago is from Brazil, but how else can you describe why he turned down TWO(2) titel shots against 2 different Brazilians. Maybe them soccers kicks are still fresh in Page's memory. I dont know
